Vancouver Frag Auction/Swap Meet in August

The Reef Network is planning to have another frag auction/swap meet sometime in mid to late August.

It would happen in my back yard (near East 45th and Boundary in east Van).

Depending on interest this could be a full blown auction with registration etc. and/or an informal swap meet for frags and equipment.

This is will be an awesome way to meet other reefers in the lower mainland and get some great deals on frags and gear. I could also fire up the Weber and get a few burgers going. Unlike other frag events we've held in the past you wouldn't have to stay around all day.

Please reply to this thread so that we can get an idea of the interest in this event and which day in August would be the best.

Sounds like a good idea.

Depending on the day....... I may drop by.

Cheers,
Vic

Sunday, August 9 works for me or Saturday (early part of day) August 15 is ok.

Whenever it is, I'll try to make it out there for at least a couple of hours.

If there are too many people interested to comfortably accomodate at your place Franklin, the Reef Network is welcome to use my place for a larger crowd.

fkshiu 07-17-2009 03:04 AM

Pretty good response so far. Keep 'em coming - the weekend of Aug 15/16 or 22/23 seems to be best.

hockey nut 07-17-2009 04:09 AM

Aug 23rd or after is a go for me. Should have some nice frags by then.:olympic:

fkshiu 07-17-2009 04:16 PM

Bump

Coincidentally 07-17-2009 04:24 PM

Depending on time/date I will be there.

Jason McK 07-17-2009 05:27 PM

I will be there regardless of Date.

How about a poll on the format?

BC Mosaic 07-17-2009 06:31 PM

Anytime is fine for me.

I prefer the "live auction" format like the one held at Scott's (Skylord) place last year instead of the silent auction.

That's a good idea! Now I know why you're a mod. :)

OK, poll's up.

Jason McK 07-17-2009 08:37 PM

You know my Vote. (Less work for me) LOL

I hear ya Jason.
I'm willing to pay $10.00 as a sort of "cover charge" towards those that are involved in making this happen and to having a "live auction".
Another poll?

Chowder 07-17-2009 10:14 PM

I vote full blown auction with auctioneer. I vote Jason Mck as being the auctioneer because of his previous experience in the auctions he has done.

I'm more than willing to do what ever everyone wants.

I'm thinking Someone needs his post counts reset LOL

auction

Sundays are good for me.

fkshiu 07-19-2009 02:20 AM

Looks like the swap meet format has the lead so far - or is it just Jason voting over and over again to avoid auctioning duties?

Jason McK 07-19-2009 02:31 AM

Oh Sorry I wasn't supposed to do that? LOL

No I can't do that

swap meet

After experiencing one of each of these style trade events, I have to say the swap meet was by far the best.

First thing I preferred was that what ever I was paying for, I got to physically see the pieces ahead of time. As impressive as mother colonies pictures are, I like seeing what it is I am taking home.

I also liked the fact that whoever the seller was was generally standing right there, so you could ask all the questions on the spot, as well as I had more interesting conversations with people standing at a table, than I might have sitting staring at a screen calling out bids.

I liked that time wise you could much easier come and go as you pleased while still coming out with a lot. The first come first serve seemed bad at first as I remember as soon as the hour hit and the trade began some of the stuff I eyed were gone in a heartbeat. But people were leaving with frags, while more sellers were showing up. So their was opportunity for great stuff throughout the day.

The other nice part to the swap meet, is The Reef Network really only has to setup a venue, the date, and some odds. The sellers are responsible for their own setups and their own sales, take downs, etc. Making a lot less work it seems as a whole. Untamed's table was awesome still incorporating his pictures of mother colonies, you just pointed at the one you liked he turned around opened a cooler turned back and it was in your hands.

I will be there no matter what style , but I have to put my vote for the Swap.

Thanks for the important feedback. We'll try to take any information/opinions provided into account for future events.

Despite its drawbacks and the way the voting's going I still believe that an auction format (whether silent or Jason McK-powered) still has its place on occasion.

Keep it coming!

Oceanic 07-21-2009 07:26 PM

I am in for sure.

KPG007 07-22-2009 05:00 PM

I was at both the auction and swap meet. While I really enjoyed the auction, it took about 5 hours to go through all the frags. I also liked the swap because you can pick up hardware, ect as well.

Either way, I'll be there!

fkshiu 07-24-2009 06:50 PM

Getting down to your last chance to vote on the when and how of the event!
