Slowing Coraline

I was wondering what a person can do to slow the growth of COraline? I have MASSIVE amounts of pink coraline and my long spine urchin doesn't seem to even make a dent in it. Just becoming a pain to scrape it all off every couple weeks. I like the looks of it, but with it would just grow slower on the glass....

Hi
Adding vodka to the aquarium will slow it down. There are much more grater benefits of dosing vodka.

Letting your magnesium fall low will also retard the growth.

How low is low? Mag is usually around 1170, Ca 400

I don't have an exact number to share, i just know that when i stop adding magnesium to my system my coraline stops growing.

Or you could just not worry about it and let it grow....

use a magnetic cleaner and run your glass every day and you won't get any build up on your viewing glass.

I'm talking about my back glass. Front is easy to keep clean. Not overly accessible to back glass, with the rockwork and such AND, letting it grow.........Ya it overtakes Everything in a month or so. I wanted Black back walls, not Pink LOL

well hate to break it but your screwed.. anything you do to slow the growth of coraline is going to have the same effect on corals..

I always painted the back wall of the tanks but that was to hide the stuff behind the tank, once the coraline was there I was happy also.

LOL, well, I'm used to getting screwed. Oh well. Thx.

I amk going to try Vodka dosing tho. Allways wondered about it, did some reading now, I'll give it a try see what/if it atleast colors up the corals,

Navarchus 07-11-2009 06:09 PM

It is holly triangle ca, mg and alk, once you lowering one the 2 other will be impacted.
There is a balance between them, fiddling with will it will influence the ability of coral precipitating calcium and carbonates, in will influence alkalinity and my cause ph swing and so on…..

Not that kind, silly. Short end of the stick kind... no wait, how about... Ahh nevermind LOL

Myka 07-11-2009 09:26 PM

If you keep your rock away from the glass on all sides it makes cleaning much easier. :) I'm finicky about coralline of the glass too. I don't use those magnetic glass cleaners though as the coralline gets stuck in them and scratches the glass. Never again!! Grr.
