Why bother?

So a guy posts on this site because he is proud of what he has. Goes on to explain what he is doing. He does'nt ask for anyones opinion or help at all. One question, "how do I post pics?" Sure we all know he dumped alot of fish in at once, but is that any reason to start giving your "expert" opinions or suggesting to add bleach or a bunch of sharks? Here's my unasked for opinion YOU GUYS ARE IGNORANT DICKS!!!!!! Go ahead and ban me mods but the right thing to do is to delete all the negative crap these guys have posted on that guys thread. And "Mr.Tang Police" I'm also directing this at you as you seem to think you need to give your "expert" opinion on anything that you don't agree about. I'm sure I'm not alone on this as you seem to **** alot of people off by the way you give advice. Good way to attract and chase off any new members. And your question about "what do I expect posters to post?" Something a little more encouraging for people to read. If you don't have anything positive to say than keep it shut. Never heard of Chestermere but there was 2 posts from people who live there and I hope they are all not like you guys.

Aquattro 03-28-2009 06:58 PM

If you'd calm down a bit and explain what you're actually talking about, we can look at it...

Madreefer is referring to the initial bandwagon hopping of "oh too many fish - you're effed fella" even though the guy had not posted his tank dimensions along with another member telling said OP to pour bleach in his tank.

Hey bud, I'm not mad. I don't really have to explain. Just read the thread 300G has started. He was'nt asking for opinions or help, just posting what he's got and people decide to start telling him the do's and don'ts right away without knowing anything about his system or if it was a tank upgrade and so on. Than the guys wife has to come on here and try to explain the situation. I bet you his wife can't wait until she tries to translate the replys. Just a good way to scare or chase people away from the hobby.

Aquattro 03-28-2009 07:14 PM

sigh....sorry, I never read that thread, I've cleaned it up.

I agree with you. I just had no idea what you were talking about :) When stuff like that gets posted, there is an option to report posts to the staff.

What, you mean you don't have a custom SQL set up yet to search posts from pot stirrers?

I do, but it's in the shop right now..

Pazil 03-28-2009 07:25 PM

It is fully expected for people to, in one way or another, voice the opinions or concerns when they are passionate about something. I do agree that some of the posts were EXTREMELY poorly expressed and should not have been written. On the other hand I would hate to see people not post advice (asked for or not) when they see something is wrong. Imagine if the OP in question really had no idea that what he did could cause serious health risks to all of the fish and no one said anything.

We are all here to learn and help each other out as a community.... I am glad this thread was started.

Cheers
Lawrence

All public boards are like this unfortunately. You have 500 users with 20 who are good....even at reefcentral, if you read the threads very carefully you will realize there are only a handful of select people who everyone listens to, they have built up a good reputation over time, and simply having a huge post count doesn't mean you should offer advice, it could simply mean your long winded. There are a lots of people on every board as well that have been doing this hobby for 6-months a year and they think they have it nailed, whereas on some of the larger boards with people who have years and years and years would barely consider your tank stable at that age. Also, people read advice, follow it (without doing or trying anything else, and it works...)so therefore in their limited way they go on to passionately profess their way is the only way it works...blah blah. It is the human condition for most people unfortunately to think their opinion of worth to the rest, whether it is back up or not. There is, And I think most would agree with me 95% opinion and 5% backed up with fact. I'm sure everyone is guilty to some degree. But again with public forums you get all sorts of people with all sorts of intellectual capacities, and unfortunately it shows. Most people on here mean well, even if their opinion is not wanted I do no think very often they are intending to come off the way they do, but alas...they do no think before they speak, because they are passionate about some aspect, and they are regurgitating the same drivel that was told to them (they have never challenged these opinions of their own, they let others define things for them, instead of doing it for themselves) most of what is read or said on these types of boards, anyone if they look can find an opinion that is contrary to what is said and can't possible work, yet it does. People have to start admitting they are playing a guessing game with their tanks and so far they have guessed right.

Aquattro 03-28-2009 07:40 PM

It's fine to offer CONTSTRUCTIVE advice in an attempt to help someone, even if they did not specifically ask, but to tell someone to pour bleach in their tank is just way out of line.
By posting anything in a public forum, you open yourself up to critique, which is expected. But to blatantly insult someone will not be tolerated. You don't have to agree here, but you do have to be polite.

I have to agree, the thought of someone telling someone else to just "pour bleach" in their tank is way out of line. Even if the person was just trying to use it as a comparison and didn't really mean it in a literal sense, it's still a comment that is uncalled for.

GreenSpottedPuffer 03-29-2009 06:29 PM

I have to agree. In the past, I may not have. I may have said something like 'well if your going to post in a public forum...' but not anymore. I have had a few threads (one about a copperband recently) where I even asked from the beginning that it stay on topic and not become a debate but of course two individuals out of the dozens that responded had to make it a debate and then an argument. I asked repeatedly for the thread to stay on topic but one individual insisted on taking it on a ridiculous, non constructive tangent that really frustrated me. The topic and idea was lost on one person who ruined it for everyone. The thread was closed and the discussion ended. That person could have so easily started a new thread as you have done here :) instead of continuing on in mine.

So I agree...why post? Im guilty of this in the past...I have offered advice or disagreed with someones tank when all they were doing was trying to post pictures. But never in a negative way like the bleach comment--jeez that was the harshest comment I have ever heard on here. Not mention, the tank is BEAUTIFUL and well cared for.

I think unless something is terribly wrong with what your seeing or hearing (and a tang in a 90G is not terribly wrong) then you need to respect the persons wishes/intentions and just enjoy the thread or move on to the next one.

Its funny how easy it is for people to say these kinds of things hiding behind their keyboard. I would love to see if they would have the balls to say these things to peoples face--I bet not. I bet he says its a nice tank.

digital-audiophile 03-29-2009 07:06 PM

I've got balls the size of coconuts :p LOL

naw... I really am a nice person here and IRL. If I didn't want to help people I would have stopped coming her a long time ago.

Madreefer 03-29-2009 07:20 PM

I know what threads your speaking about GSP as I have read them all. Oh yeah... I like your tank by the way. You've got some cool fish too. Same as the "two rotties" guy. You both have alot more patience with peoples comments than I do. Seems that no matter what either of you two do it brings out the worst of the know it alls. There is a couple of self proclaimed experts on here that seem to like to rule the roost. Sure they are very knowledgeable but just a little to ignorant on how they come across. But you have to go look at what they post just for a laugh sometimes. It's never bad advice but the delivery is the part that makes you shake your head.

Thanks. my2rotties is a girl :)

And yes she takes a lot of crap too that has been unfair over the last few months. I agree, its all about HOW you give your advice. I also think that in the example we are talking about (300G) that there was no reason to give advice. Or at least ask questions before you blast him for his tank.

Some may not agree with the tank (I wouldn't keep quite so many fish myself but dont see anything wrong with it) but he wasn't asking if people agreed or not. He just wanted to share. The animals look great and if you watch the video, are certainly not suffering.

my2rotties 03-29-2009 08:44 PM

I'm not a guy...

in all honesty...

http://www.blogcdn.com/ncaafootball....s-business.jpg

Don't let someone bug you on the internet, its not worth your time or the stress that some people get from it. But imo, i did take a peak into that thread and looked at the first few pages and do agree with the advice given. I have my own views on the reef hobby and what he is doing goes against alot of them. But if i have nothing positive to say, i keep quiet.

since people cant actually tell that posting someone a pbitawa is not actually a suggestion to pour bleach in your tank, heres a little something from the guys who started this whole thing
PBITAWA - Pour Bleach In Your Tank And Walk Away - What we recommend to all Reefcasters! - Tell your friends there's a new episode of Reefcast by posting this around - Also use this as a recommendation to anyone that asks dumb questions about the hobby, complains about their tank, post about a tank problem, or generally just annoys you

they talk about it in a few episodes not shure which ones though,
http://www.reefcast.com/index.php

maybe try throwin google a pbitawa and read a few dosen other threads where its been layed down without a few hundred people people actually thinking it means to pour bleach in your tank, i guess canada cant take a smack upside the head when someone calls them out for doing something not so smart

in this case someone with 13 fairly large fish adds 8 more large fish and lets us know hes gonna add 5 more large fish soon, claiming to be in the hobby a very long time. to me someone in the hobby a long time should know a bit better and since said person didnt even think thier was a problem with this, insted of me telling him what i actually thought about this situation i hit him with the not so famous pbitawa to express my fustration and felling of nothing is gonna help this situation since no help is needed i guess.
anyway since thier isnt many reefcasters around here people took it the wrong way, ill admit to someone who never herd it before it would sound mega rude which wasnt totally my intentions.
from now on ill keep it to my self and if someone catches me doin something super stupid they can hit me with one and ill laugh about it.

Guess when I googled it quicky I never got the full gist of that saying. Though really how many people could you expect to know it in the first place. That makes it a bit risky (and worthy of a smackin' to begin with). Sorry folks...should have left that thread alone. Google and I will take the blame =)

Delphinus 03-30-2009 03:42 AM

I just googled gcad and ... actually I still don't know what this means. Galveston County Appraisal District? Gnome Computer Aided Drafting? Gregg Cad (real estate agent)? Geographical Computer Aided Design? Granite City Army Depot? Great Circle Azimuth and Distance?

I'm soooo confused ....

But I think what we're successfully demonstrating is that if people want to complain about a thread somewhere in a NEW thread in the LOUNGE we can diffuse it with ease (at my expense)
