ID Me Please
I bought a rock with a mess of these on it. At first I thought they were Mushrooms of some sort. Now I'm not too sure. Is there such a thing as a Mini Anemones? The are scattered everywhere on the rock, but all of them seem to be coming out of a crack or crevice. In the one picture its in a hole and extends out.

They look like garden variety aiptasia to me.
|
Are there different variety's of aiptasia ? I've had my fair share, but they were all the same dull brown color with long tentacles that protrude from the rock. These are green with short tentacles that sit flat on the rock.
|
They are these:http://www.melevsreef.com/id/majano.html
Mine looked more like your than his but still the same. They can be pretty but will take over a tank in no time. Zap them now before it is to late...lol |
I had a couple manjos that looked like that......until I forcefed them vinegar
|
:question:To me the just look like "button polyps"

I've had Majano's too, but these don't strike me as being them. I hate to kill anything unless i'm sure it's going to negatively affect other things in the tank.
I too questioned whether they were button polyps, but why do they only grow in a crack, or groove? Kind of like they are protecting their foot. |
I'm on the fance. mojano vs button polyps... I had one that looked like this that I was told to kill so I did....but it didn't die, it's in my 8g and still kickin' has never reproduced. weird.

Those don't look like mojanos.

I have to agree, but what do they look like? I'm not convinced that they are button polyps. If they were all over the rock I could accept that they were, but there only in the nooks and crannys, leading me to believe that there not.
Thanks everyone for all the input. |
I can't seem to come up with a solid conclusion. Now the question is should i nuke them?
|
Well they're certainly not button polyps. You can see that the "skirt" on them has two levels to it. Button polyps have all of the "fringe" coming out of the button at the same place. The fringe doesn't alternate up and down like that (if anyone knows what I mean).
I still vote for aiptasia but I'm not adverse to saying they could be something else. If you're liking them that much, keep an eye on them. If another one pops up in less than 2 weeks, well, just imagine how many weeks it will take to cover that rock...and the rock next to it...and the rock next to it  Can you get a photo with less blue (ie. turn off your actinics) or is that just the light you have? |
Sorry, I can't do much better than that. The pictured I posted are with the the actinics off.
