Welcome to Canreef Cougarman (and your sweet 600G tank!)

Just thought I would take the opportunity to welcome Jared aka "Cougarman" to Canreef.

While some of us may have followed his posts on other forums in the past, it pleases me to see him here on Canreef. I have had the opportunity to view his sweet 600G tank and his spectacular collection of fish (and specifically rare tangs).

Jared is my go to guy when I need to know something about fish, he is a good guy and has a great deal of knowledge to share. Welcome!

Dave

Cougarman 07-29-2008 03:46 PM

Haha. Thanks Dave for the warm welcome. Hello to everyone on Canreef. Dave referred me to this site after I got banned fro AP and the Tang Police. Looking forward to communicating with some fellow Canadians. I dont do much posting, but I post on this thread religiously. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...&pagenumber=35

It's all about Tangs. My favourite.

Underwater 07-29-2008 04:40 PM

Hey There!!!

Welcome to Canreef...we're a site filled with lively discussions, a depth of knowledge and a bit of humour tossed in for good measure!

Sorry-
Ok, total :n00b: (newbie) moment here, but could someone tell me what AP and the Tang Police are? I have seen them referenced several times, but still don't know what they refer to.

Thanks and again-welcome!

fortheloveofcrabs 07-29-2008 04:43 PM

Don't be fooled - nobody is nice here....

:)

NOBODY!!! MUAHAHAHAHA!!!

Ahem...

Hi.

Chaloupa 07-29-2008 04:51 PM

WELCOME Cougarman......wickedfrags.com SHAME on you for not making sure pictures came along too with the Welcome!

AP is another aquarium forum......

Tang Police are exactly that....people that will give their opinion on you owning tangs with your size of tank.....basically they are concerned that some tangs are put in small tanks which will do the tang an injustice. (to put it nicely)

Jason McK 07-29-2008 04:51 PM

Welcome to Canreef. Did you move to Ontario from South Dakota?

I've been following your thread for a long time

No, Not South Dakota, But a lived in Cleveland Ohio for several years before moving back here. I just like the atmosphere of that thread. It's actually Goodwin9s thread.

Thanks for the welcome everyone, I'll post pics shortly.

wickedfrags 07-29-2008 05:28 PM

Let me tell you - I wish my camera was capable of capturing good fish pictures. Not only was I amazed at the variety, health and size of his fish collection, the tank is truely a monster. Biggest tank I have ever seen in a home, and he built it himself.

Made my 270 seem like a nano, I was emasculated when I first saw it, yet I could not look away!

And like your signature, some truth in that for sure. IMO, any thoughts by this group directed towards this system...uneducated.

Delphinus 07-29-2008 05:39 PM

Think Dave was referring to Chaloupa's description of what the tang police are. She was rather polite - the whole concept of tang police came about because there is a school of thought that no tank is large enough for a tang, and people will jump all over someone else for even having a tang in the first place - thus, "tang police". And it's a bit silly because it seems that it's only tangs that receive this fervor of opinion - ie., angels, butterflies, etc - you don't hear of the "angel police" or the "anthias police".

Dave's just saying that anyone who feels a tang is being served an injustice by being kept in a tank, and applies those comments towards someone in a 600g tank hasn't probably actually seen this tank in person.

My guess anyhow. :) Sorry if I'm putting words in anyone's mouth!

Underwater 07-29-2008 05:42 PM

Ahhh

So "this group" was referring to the tang police/AP-as opposed to Canreef-got it...thanks Tony!!!

(I would be in trouble with the tang police as well I guess!!!) :surprise:

Your right on the money about the tang police.

I am not sure how many tangs and species of tangs Cougerman has, but some may say it it too many. Some of the fish are full grown also, he has a sailfin and several other that must be at least 12" in size. I would guess he has at least 20 different tangs in there.

Having seen the tank and see how the fish behave, I would say the fish population is fine. Most people would have no real idea how fish would behave in a 600G tank as realistically, most have never seen a tank so large, let alone fully stocked.

Ya it's just rediculous. C'mon its a fish website. It's supposed to be fun to visit.
I'm searching through pics as we speak I will upload shortly.

hillbillyreefer 07-29-2008 07:28 PM

Hey Cougarman. Welcome. You'll find a lot more debate and chatter on this site. People here seem to be alot more open minded when it comes to different ways, and opinions on doing things. I've been in trouble on the other site for just pointing out the obvious, managed to get myself banned from a thread.

There is only one thing we aren't open minded about here and that is PICTURES!!! We need pictures!!!

Cougarman 07-29-2008 07:52 PM

OK there are alot of pics. I'm linking from Photobucket. I hope this works. 1st are some general pics of the tank and livestock. Then some of the tank when I 1st built it. I hope you guys and girls like my tank.

Wow.Very nice setup. There are a lot of fish in there but all of them look well looked after. How much would you say it cost you to build the tank?Clint

Parker 07-29-2008 07:59 PM

Wow, looks great!

Chaloupa 07-29-2008 08:07 PM

Stunning fish! I am so very jealous of your Moorish Idol.....very nice and very healthy. All the fish look fantastic and the fact that it is an SPS tank also....? WOW! That should say something. Everyone has an opinion but we should all be slow to judge anyone when they can prove success. Nice job! Can't wait to see more pics......the puffer and type of triggers.....different to have in that type of tank...surprising, but very cool!

Underwater 07-29-2008 08:07 PM

Holy Amazing Batman!!!

Dang-I just woke up from a dream!!! That is BEAUTIFUL!!!

Please, tell me, what is the fish in the first set of pictures-just after the regal tang photo? (It's also in the first larger photo-it's black, yellow and white striped with a funky mouth).

Stunning-to say the least!
~M

I'd say it cost me about $800 to build the tank, including the epoxy.

Ya its definately a tank that from what you hear, shouldn't work. But somehow it does. All the livestock get along fine the Puffer is about 2.5 yrs old, the Moorish idol is closing in on 4 yrs old. The Clown trigger is relatively new, but so far no issues. He is the little guy though. Atleast for now.

CLINT 07-29-2008 08:16 PM

HMMMM I do have a few extra sheets of plywood.I could tell the wife that Im building her a storage closet.LOL.Very nice job your tank looks great.Clint

Whatigot 07-29-2008 08:24 PM

what an insane thread...
I couldn't believe it had been split 3 times so far.
your tank/system are deserving of triple that many posts though.
I remember the day I brought my 72 display home, I was ecstatic, but just reading about this build got me excited....lol
I honestly think I would like to come over for a swim sometime soon.

hey clint, let me know if you need a hand.
building that is, I'm terrible at convincing wives

Delphinus 07-29-2008 08:26 PM

Ohhhhh, a doliatus rabbitfish too... I love those!!! Yours looks huge!!! Thanks for the eye candy.

Underwater 07-29-2008 08:30 PM

Wow!

Well, that is a stunning fish for sure! Are they are hard to get and take care of? I'm a tang freak, too...I'm assuming there's no problems combining them?

Welcome Cougarman. It looks like you have a sweet setup.

digital-audiophile 07-29-2008 09:15 PM

Amazing collection of fish! Very nice indeed! Removal of excess nutrients must be a real chore with a bioload like that though eh?

Except for the occasional minor tiff, they generally get along. It's only when I add a new tang that there are moments of aggression.

Ya, I have 2 skimmers going. An Aqua C 2000, and an MRC 4 foot, dual beckett recirculator. I also have a 90 gallon with a 16 inch sand bed and a 120 gallon refugium plumbed inline. There is also a 130 gallon acclimation tank plumbed inline for new fish.
