Babel

Okay, so I know this is probably a little late, but I still gotta get the word out there so as to prevent further casualties:

DON'T.

God, what the hell were they thinking?

Can anyone fill me in on what this movie was about?

Keri 04-24-2008 09:21 AM

Heh.... if you want another one Not to see I highly recommend "no country for old men"

Joe Reefer 04-24-2008 02:20 PM

Babel is terrible movie not sure what its about either. On the other hand I thought No Country for Old Men was pretty good.

Pier Pressure 04-24-2008 04:02 PM

Babel I shall avoid. No Country for Old Men - I thought it started out pretty good but quickly lost steam and became boring.

It is funny these shows that win all the awards you end up expecting them to be great and they NEVER are. Makes you wonder who is handing out the awards and for what.

VFX 04-24-2008 04:17 PM

You mean nobody here, gets the delicate interplay between three sets of seemingly unrelated people, in three separate countries, all linked together by the single act of one man giving a gift to another man and the series of events that results?

Well me neither!

... anyone see Prom Night?

.

Der_Iron_Chef 04-24-2008 04:33 PM

"4 interlocking stories all connected by a single gun all converge at the end and reveal a complex and tragic story of the lives of humanity around the world and how we truly aren't all that different." ~imdb.com

I REALLY liked it. It was a different sort of movie, but I felt it had a lot to say.

VFX 04-24-2008 04:41 PM

I extend my personal apologies to Drew for the false information contained within my original post and will amend below...

The movie still sucked big time!

.

Pier Pressure 04-24-2008 04:48 PM

I agree - totally sucked. I could barely stay awake for it. I have not seen Prom Night yet but the critics all say it is awful so chances are it will be good. Have you seen it and is it any good?

One movie I saw lately that was really cute was The Waterhorse. Kind of geared towards a younger generation but still super cute. Great work with graphics for the waterhorse!

Old Men? Man, I almost died of OLD AGE during that movie. I liked the villain, but I didn't like the COMPLETELY random slaying of the protagonist that I was following for, oh I dunno, THREE QUARTERS OF THE MOVIE?

Der_Iron_Chef 04-24-2008 05:09 PM

Well, I suggest a movie for you guys, then.

House of Wax. It has Paris Hilton, and the critics hated it. Might be right up your alley ;)

Joe Reefer 04-24-2008 05:30 PM

3:10 to Yuma was another movie that left me scratching my head.

The big hairy monster part had pop squirting out of my aunts nose.

Oh, you mock Drew, you mock. But just you wait, one day, you will be sitting on the toilet and it will hit you, "damn, they were right, it really was boring movie of ghastly proportions."

Babel = epic fail.

I thought it was a good movie. It's really sad that you guys couldn't figure out what it was about!!! :(

Written, directed ,produced, financed and voted for by old weed smokin hippies.

banditpowdercoat 04-25-2008 04:01 AM

3:10 to yuma I liked. but thx for reminding me that I lost 120 minuts of my life watching babel. That movie was ZZZZzzzzz, but yet, I could not sleep through it:twised:

Its not that I didn't understand, its just not a good movie.

Delphinus 04-25-2008 06:44 AM

LOL you guys make me want to go check this movie out. Two small kids == a whole lotta Treehouse and Wiggles movies. Real movies? Man I can't remember the last one I went to go see. :(

I can't wait for Indiana Jones though..

EmilyB 04-26-2008 06:44 AM

NCFOM somehow reminded me of Fargo. Which was just on TV tonite, so I did a rewatch...

Oh yah, oh yah...

A brain damaged orangutan could figure out what it was about.

It's a pretty movie with some good acting but the treatment of each individual story line was so shallow that that 30 minutes in you just don't care any more. They were to busy being clever to bother telling a decent story.

Myka 04-26-2008 04:43 PM

People are spoiled with action packed intense movie plots, and as soon as a simple one comes out that tells a simple story, everyone thinks it's a poor movie.

albert_dao 04-26-2008 06:32 PM

That's a pretty ARROGANT thing of you to say :)

I really doubt any of us here are the thoughtless Hollywood crowd that you're stereotyping and it's pretty insulting that you're insinuating so. Babel was plain, downright boring and drawn out. It was shallow, you couldn't relate to any of the situations and I sure as hell didn't care about intricate associations between the not-so-compelling characters.

Thx.

I agree fully with what Albert posted.

The film was bad. They took the one maybe a bit compelling story of the Japanese girl and mangled it with heavy handed clever stunts. I know she's deaf, I get it. Having a montage of the inside of a club with no sound gives me the distinct impression the director thought I was too stupid to figure out that deaf means "doesn't hear stuff". It's the film equivalent of Stephen King's trademark adjective eruptions only more pretentious.

Kind of like your post really.

Snappy 04-27-2008 03:04 PM

I quit watching it after an hour because I did not want to waste 2 hours I'll never get back. I would way rather sit and stare at my tank. If I want depression in my life I'll watch the news. I watch movies to be entertained so for me Babel just didn't fit the bill.

Keri 04-29-2008 04:38 PM

I actually saw a GOOD movie the other night, rented Juno and was pleased, even my husband enjoyed it so it's not totally a chick flick.

(ps : I too was confused when the main good character in NCFOM ends up dead in a scene they didn't think was worth showing you.

digital-audiophile 04-29-2008 04:59 PM

I was lucky that I got this advice a while ago, I have avoided Babel ever since.

NCFOM was good to start but lost me half way through.

Attonement is another one I had to suffer through a couple weeks back.. the wife loved it.. on the other hand I wanted to poke my eyes out with turkey skewers.

It's been a while since I have seen a good movie. I'm a big fan of war movies so 2008 should be good. Der Rote Baron (if they ever peg a north american release date) and Passchendael in the fall :)

Pier Pressure 04-29-2008 05:04 PM

I saw I Am Legend on the weekend and I gotta say it was pretty good. Different concept and lots of action. I would recommend it for sure.

Read the book and you will cringe at how much of a sell-out that movie was :(

Then again, I have ulterior motives for disliking that movie.

dsaundry 04-29-2008 11:27 PM

My wife made me suffer through Cloverfield last night,,sort of a cross between Star Trek and Blair Witch Project.. Absolute crap,,should have been called Garbage Dump instead of Cloverfield.....Yuk:bad-word:

kari 04-30-2008 01:04 AM

You will see a new light in all the above mentioned movies if you take the time, sit back and watch Casey Affleck and Matt Damon in "Gerry." Your a*s cheeks will really grip the couch.

Pier Pressure 04-30-2008 02:33 PM

Albert the book is always better. Glad I saw the movie first! Now I am going to track down the book so that I can read it. I did not even know a book existed - thanks for letting me know!

Also, Cloverfield is off my list of movies to see!

banditpowdercoat 04-30-2008 04:38 PM

Ya, Was NOT impressed by Cloverfield. Almost got motion sickness.

I am legend was allright, but didnt like the ending

Alien vs Predator Requiem Good, what I expected for that type of movie, but TOO DAMN DARK I hate when they do it all black. might as well be watching via Radio LOL
