Started ZEOvit

Like the title says, started ZEOvit last night. It makes me really nervous, for some reason! I'm sure it'll all work out.

I'll be taking some before photos to see if this helps slow or eliminate the valonia that has become the thorn in my side!

Any random little hints, suggestions, praises or warnings anyone can offer in regards to ZEOvit would be great!

Ooh keep us posted on the valonia situation! Any chance you have some brown wafer algae to keep an eye on as well? effing wafer algae *grumble*

Der_Iron_Chef 01-29-2008 07:02 PM

Christy...I have some, but very little, of the brown wafer algae. I'll keep an eye on it for you :) This valonia is breaking my heart, though. Ugghh! I'm testing zero nitrates and zero phosphates consistently. Water changes, blah blah blah....nothing seems to phase it. I could continue to remove it manually (and I will), but I'd like to see if this makes any difference whatsoever.

I've also started programming my lights to go off for an hour in the middle of the photoperiod (a little trick I learned on the zeovit forum website), and I think it might've helped a little already.

I used Zeovit from day one and ammonia didn't even register during the cycle. Could tell that ammonia was being cycled when Nitrate started showing up at trace levels after a month.

The thng I found difficult was how to interpret what the tank was going through with the test results being different than what I would normally see.

Delphinus 01-29-2008 09:12 PM

Sweet! I think you'll be happy. I can't wait to start too. I just need to get my hands on a reactor. Aaaand, Ok, maybe get a tank going too I suppose.

wayner 01-30-2008 03:15 AM

Tony - where do you get a zeo reactor?, I noticed J&L has one on their site now, anywhere else around here?

Der_Iron_Chef 01-30-2008 03:41 AM

Albert at Gold mentioned having some available after MACNA this year. At least I'm pretty sure he did. Might be worth sending him a PM.

Delphinus 01-30-2008 03:49 AM

Hi Wayne - I actually don't have a reactor yet. I've just decided I will be going with Zeo when the new tank is actually going. :)

Who was it on here that made their own kick *** reactor??

http://canreef.com/vbulletin/showthr...zeovit+reactor ..... I think?

digital-audiophile 01-30-2008 03:38 PM

Yeah! That's it. I want to start zeo but don't want to pay a fortune for the reactor.

Where did you get yours Drew?

Der_Iron_Chef 01-30-2008 03:52 PM

Until I have a new stand (that I'm having built now) and a sump, I'm just using a Phosban reactor hanging off the side to start it off. I just shake it up once a day and it does the same thing. I only need 0.4L of zeolites in there right now, so it fills it up about halfway.

digital-audiophile 01-30-2008 03:55 PM

Hmm I guess that would work eh? I've a little more volume that you but maybe I could use a couple phosban reactors.. seams like a "cheap" fix?

Der_Iron_Chef 01-30-2008 03:59 PM

Definitely a cheap fix....for the time being anyway! It's just a little bit of a pain in the ***....having to shake it, etc. But whatever. It's a small price to pay for the potential benefits....at least until I can get a suitable reactor.

digital-audiophile 01-30-2008 04:07 PM

Considering the size of my system I actually use a rather small sump ~30 gallons and most of the real esate in there is already taken up by my skimmer, heaters and return pumps so I'm not even sure if I have room for a zeo reactor.

Brent F 01-31-2008 04:09 AM

I ended up using a phosban reactor and hanging it off the back of my tank. Makes it easier to get at for the daily shake

Hey there drew in my 120 gal i had amazing amount of bubble algae, after tranfering the tank from teh 65 gal to the 120 i scraped the crap out of the rocks it came back and so i added a fox face he eat every last piece. so i was lucky on that note

I did the same thing, i.e. "Phosban reactor" mine has 1/3 of the bag of zeo rocks.
What a PITA to shake that one !
So what i did.., i got a small vessel in the sump using MaxiJet p.head to pump water from the sump in to the vessell and overflow back to sump. I have zeo rocks in the plastic net from oranges attached to the plastic rod inside this small vessel.
makes it very easy to shake and flow can be adjusted using Phosban reactor valve.
I think this is ok because of the price of the zeo reactor and also no room in the small sump.
I would definitely get a proper reactor for larger system
.

Brent F 02-01-2008 03:20 AM

My RSM is 82 gal total with the sump, etc so I use 1/2 a bag of zeovit in a phosban reactor. Shaking is easy with it hanging on the back of the tank. The hard thing is remembering to do it every day.

digital-audiophile 02-25-2008 08:08 PM

Drew, any update on your zeo? I just picked up a reactor and the rocks/basic three from Dennis today and I am going to start her up.

Brent F 02-25-2008 08:34 PM

Greg,

Did you end up getting a Zeovit reactor or use a couple Phosban reactors?

I've been running Zeovit 8 weeks now and just added Sponge Power and Amino Acids to the basic three.

digital-audiophile 02-25-2008 09:28 PM

Id did get an actual Zeovit reactor. Golds had a decent price on the 1Litre, Denis said that the price had actually dropped a bit.

Brent F 02-25-2008 10:24 PM

I'll have to check it out. I'm using a phosban reactor with 1/2 pack of zeovit and 200 ml of carbon in it. I had to split my carbon because there is only room for 1/2 of it in the phosban reactor.

I thought their smallest reactor was 1.5 litres. The 1 litre size might work better for me.
