What Lighting?
Hi everyone,
I'm brand-new to the hobby, and I'm starting out with a little 10 gallon. I'm not going to be very ambitious with it, just a clownfish (they're cool!) and some softies (mushrooms, polyps, xenia). Possibly some LPS, if they're easy. What kind of lighting should I get? As I said, I'm not very ambitious so I don't want to get something that's totally overkill. One idea was to use an ordinary incandescent hood with screw-in sockets, but use 2 x 24W 5000K self-ballasted PC bulbs instead. JBJ Lighting also has this clamp-on http://www.jbjlighting.com/sys_clamp_on.html model. How does the 36W combo white/actinic compare with the idea above? Thanks! |

You could try somthing like this, http://www.yfsinternational.com/category.asp?id=PL-H/5U They come in 65watt and 100watt. The cost with ballast is $68 and $85 And are 6500k.

How about http://www.ahsupply.com? Any opinions on these guys?
It looks like a 2x36W system with enclosure and bulbs would only cost around $150USD. |
They have a good reputation, you can also check out this site for hoods:

If you go to king ed pets, they sale a power compact 32watt reto kit with ballast, tube, reflecter, and wiring
for $86.00. ask for Eric.dave |
Go with what dave111 said, that seems to be the best price. It would probably cost around that to do a DIY hood... assuming you wanted some kind of Actinic lighting  . All thee above will allow you to keep Polyps, Shrooms, Xenia and most LPS.
And BTW most LPS are easy to keep along as you provide good water conditions, ample lighting and also some really seem to do much better when target fed. |
I just called King Ed, they've got them in. Seems like a great deal, I think I'll go that way.
Thanks dave111, and everyone else too, for your valuable input! :D |

Yup. That's the right price for King Ed complete with ballast, smartlite 50/50 bulb, reflector, wiring nuts and switch. I got my Custom Sealife kits from there too. |

Bob,
What is MOPS? The only MOPS I've heard of is Mothers Of Pre-School children -hehe. |

I got the 96watt smart lite CSL retro kit from Eric for $135, then when I decided two weeks later to upgrade to an enclosed twin MH/twn NO Actinic unit he gave me $125 credit for the retro kits, he sold them as used for $125 a half an hour after I brought them in.
King Ed is with out a doubt the cheapest place to get stuff, Eric is the big guy, gruff voice and bad teeth, BUT he knows his stuff, I've been dealing with him for years and he has yet to steer me wrong. |
the lighting
in ref to them isthe 96er the only one light you get and can you get a actinic to.
So in a nut shell you get for 135 CDN dollars 1x 96 50/50 bulb, ballast, endcaps, wiring, and the plug. and how long is the 96 watt bulb? and one more question does he have a web page... mike |
Mike, I know you can get also a 10k and an actinic lamp from Custom Sea Life for that kit. There are probably other manufacturers and color temps as well. Yes, the kit comes with the bulb, ballast (w/ switch and plug), endcaps, and a reflector as well. The price at King Ed Pets is no longer $135. That was an introductory price. The current price is either $159 or $169. King Ed Pets does not have a web page that I'm aware of.
|
King Ed doesn't have a web site, the price is $159 now, it is still a bargain.
