4 feet of acrylic and water pump assembly for $9800 anybody?
http://www.hiddenreef.ca/storefront/...categoryid=114
Just wondering who in the right mind would pay $9864.89 (after tax) for a skimmer alone? To justify that, you need a tank with a price tag at least 3 to 6 times as much right? And what would one keep in that tank a Damsel fish ? LOL |
it would be a sweet tank though. can you imagine owning a tank big enough to need that size skimmer. maybe my next tank........i'll bribe superfudge with wobbly pops to help me build it.
|
That skimmer is rated to 2640 gallons...
|
how big was that tank in the old big als?

this is acrylic and a water pump assembly we are talking about here...Something that called common cense is missing when I see price tags like that . 9000$ will pay my apartment mortgage for almost a year ! |
Heh, it's pretty damn extravagant, but it's definitely a product that certain types of people will demand.
Truth be told, if you look up the cost of materials, the profit margin isn't the rape that most people believe it is (I believe 18" diameter EXTRUDED runs in excess of $200.00/ft, cast being even more expensive). |
And chances are, if you have a 2000G+ aquarium, you're not too concerned with the cost of things...:D
|
I'm thinking if you had a 2000G reef tank and needed a skimmer to ensure the lives of all the coral and fish in a 2000G tank 9k would be peanuts
Plus if you had the money to run and maintain a 2000G aquarium you wouldn't have a problem with 9K |
Ok let’s play this out, $9800 divided by $200 this should buy me a 200 feet of this staff. And what do we get?
4 feet of acrylic + water pump and as a bonus free assembly… what a deal! LOL :) Well 4 feet high skimmer x $200/f + the pump and assembly + whole shebang = 9800? Sweats on the brow hard earn Canadian bucks? I think I will wait for a used one when it’ll go down to $6000 LOL. If there is a penalty for money wasted this is first runner for it. The “demand” word somehow does not apply, there are only 30+ millions of people in Canada, and how many are Billionaires? May be Saudi Arabia would be a good market for it? I herd about someone had a silver Audi (made of silver), just a regular Joe Blow in Emirates. But hey I was wrong before… may be there is a “demand” for 9800$ skimmers who knows? |
What I alway find amazing is some people will pay a price just because someone else asks.
|
The thing with our society is that the prices of many things cannot be justified as per their material costs. Reputation, status and simply having the means to buy expensive things is enough for lots of people. :D
|
my wife is curently wearing the same amount of money in diamonds and we are not even leaving the house.
so if i only had 1 tank and not 6 id have no problem spending stupid ammounts of money on equipment. |
Most of us spend stupid money every day. I bought an arm band for my iPod, 2 strips of leather and a couple of pieces of velcro. $49.95. Cost of material, maybe $2..maybe? I paid out 24x that in profit to someone. Probably comparable to the skimmer. And it depends on what people want to do with their money. My bicycle is worth more than a lot of my friend's cars. They think I'm nuts, but I spend on what 's important for me. Some people will buy this skimmer, just because they want it. Don't see the big deal....
Oh, and thread moved out of reviews to lounge. |
The diameter of that skimmer is greater than 18" and it's CAST acrylic. I used extruded's cost because it was the first result I could get a solid number on :D
Personally, I find it's more an issue of how much a given sum of money is really worth to a person. There's a lot of people out there who don't work for their money (eg. investors, business owners, ummm, shadier types, etc). To those people, $9k isn't a function of how many hours they spend to earn it, it's a matter of how good their portfolio is. Big difference in the "value" of money there. |
Albert, we also need to figure the cost of startup for producing a limited number of a product. Molds, CNC machinery, R&D all need to be recovered over the forcasted number of units sold.
Look at what some people spend on watches, or eels, or koi...lots of items well over what some would consider "sane", but the for purchaser, certainly a good investment. |
i want a 2000 gallon tank.................now!!!!!!!!!!

Amazingly all of the above are very good points.
You people almost had me convinced.! |

9 grand???? Sheesh, you know what kind of bike I can buy for 9 grand?? |
I won't even tell what either of my cutting horses cost and besides the original output of cash for the nag then you have to feed it, tack it, vet it and in the case of one of my mares board it (she is a bit of a Paris Hilton - cute as a button but no life skills to make it at my place with no heated barn). Then there is entry fees - gas to travel to competitions...............oyah - I'm getting a headache just thinking about it. It's all a matter of what you decide your extra $ are worth to you as an individual. Me - I could live in my horse trailer as long and forego the nice house etc. etc. etc.
|
For some things of course one can accept a higher than cost than what the materials only are worth, but the item at the start of this is essentially some plastic glued together and a pump.

but if someone just wants some plastic glued together (sure I have some around somewhere) and a pump, I can do that for the low cost of $4000. Less than half!! :) |
I'll wait for the bubble king rip offs that should be coming out within the next year or so
|
Brand new Honda Civic is about two times that much.
9800$ is ridiculous amount of money for some acrylic glued together. Do I need an Engineering degree to do that? I had never made a skimmer , but I never made a car ether ! |
Duuuuude, you own a Tunze Wavebox....while we're on the subject of acrylic, glued together ;)
|
Lets see....a Tunze plastic wave box, a Tunze plastic pump, another Tunze plastic pump with a plastic controller and a Deltic plastic skimmer.....all total about 2000 with tax's. Divide that by 60 gallons and you get over 30 dollars per gallon for your plastic.
This big *** skimmer is less than 4 dollars per gallon. Sounds like a deal to me... Scott |
OMFG OMFG OMFG, I just had a godfricking essay deleted by random IE SHUTDOWN. PIECE OF CRAP! HOLY CRAP! I HATE THIS THING. FIREFOX FOREVER, FRICK!

Not to justify the cost of the skimmer but it is worth the exact amount that someone is willing to pay for it. If you want an example of a product where production cost is far far less than the selling price, look at computer software. How many copies of Windows has been sold. It probably costs Microsoft less than a cent per copy to have the cd printed and it sells for $100 and up http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...c.asp?CatId=26 |
Why not spend $40000 US (not including shipping) and get this http://www.aquasonic.com.au/brochures/rk2_brochure.pdf
