90g sps tank
Picked up my new tank the other day. Its a 90g, 3ft. by 2ft. by 2ft. Just finished the in wall set-up.
This is a pic from the rear, {lots of work remaining}. http://www.canreef.com/photopost/data/508/8back_pic.jpg |
Looks almost like a cube tank from that pic..
More pics Doug!! |
Bottom cover made from a sheet of acrylic with a layer if silicone and a course aragonite layed imbedded into it. No loose gravel but still gives a bit of a look.

Besides the couple of sps I have from my other tank, I picked up three beautiful aqua-cultered stag frags from Jaysons, when getting the tank. They reside in one of my several tubs on the floor, with stock in them. |
The glued on sandbed looks pretty good. I may try that on my next tank.
|
Cool looking bottom, Doug  Don't know how easy it will be to siphon crud from it, though.

This looks like a fantastic new project Doug
I wish you the best of luck with it! I have been thinking about one of those bottoms, but unfortunately 3 of my fish NEED a sandbed. I dont think syphoning the bottom will be hard because you'll still be sucking stuff up its just the bottom is rougher, and I dont think a syphon will suck pieces off the bottom. Chris |
What kind of silicone did you use doug? Are you wooried about any breakdown of the silicone?
I dont have any experience with the stuff, hence the question. Thanks Rob |
Nifty

Hey, that's cool! Does the glue actually coat the aragonite or does it still maintain its proper texture?

looking good there Doug , can't wait to see it in person
mike |
Doug,
How about some full tank shots  |
Looks great Doug
I like the sandbed idea, I saw online awhile ago someone that did the same thing but then they covered the top of the sandbed with clear acrylic and then mounted it underneath the tank, which didn't look bad either and it never gets dirty that way  |
Here is the best I can do so far. I had double this amount of rock in there at first. Never liked that, so removed it today. Plus I removed my Kole and copperband. Not sure if I will put them back or sell them. Just my 3 percs and 3yr. old mandarin in there now.
Tank is only 3/4 full. Bucket on the left is currently doing the filtering. http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...nk_009-med.jpg |
Doug I take it you sold your 170g tank. Looking good. If you decide to sell your copperband, put me down on the list.
|
Sorry Nigel i beat ya to it ....
|
Mike isn't your tank to full?
Listen Doug wouldn't you rather have that copperband swimming in a nice big tank  Just kidding Mike |
Ha HA Ha Listen there Nigel can you check on a price for a tank at the shop for me.

The kole and copperband now reside in my 55g sump for now, along with my 5 pyjama cardinals. It has lots of live rock and is filtered with my turf scrubber. Not sure whats going back into the 90. The cardinals eat to much frozen foods. The tang is the only fish that requires clip algae and flakes. And the copperband likes the looks of my new acros., although he is likely the leader for a return. I will keep the Kole, only if I cant find him a good home, as I raised him from a baby. |
That last full tank pic showing the limited rock, just does not do it for me. Not sure how others like that set-up.
I just gotta put more rock in. Whatcha think people? |
Overflow pics. just drilled the back and went a different route. Work dandy so far.
As I have not covered the back yet, you can still see the plumbing. http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...nk_012-med.jpg http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...nk_013-med.jpg http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...nk_014-med.jpg Please forgive the remains of the price tang in the one shot. DOH!! Last pic of the right side, shows the return pipe from the Mag 12 |
Looks great Doug!
Put more rock in. Are you just putting together a sump right now? Still gonna use the ATS on this system? What lighting did you put over that? Oh, one more question  Those acro's look nice, stags? Are they cultured locally? I just noticed the plugs.. Thanks! |
Hi Jack,
Thanks for the input. I have two votes for more rock now. My 55g rubbermaid sump is being used. Lots of rock in it, plus my tank, copperband and 5 cardinals. I,m also running my needlw wheel skimmer for now. Yes, the scrubber is running from the sump, currently. Not sure if I will use it though, once I start up my beckett skimmer. I have a pair of Sunlight Supply pendants. Driven by 175w Icecap ballasts. Currently running a pair of Ushio 10K bulbs, but have purchase a pair of Coralvue 14K bulbs. Also running a pair of T-5 actinics. I believe the acros are Bali aqua-cultered. |
Here she be. Much of the stuff is temp. though.

ive been looking on the internet for a bottom like that but i havent been able to find one can you please send me a link to where u found the info
the tank looks good thanks |
I assume you mean how to build one? If so I would have to look. I just thought that one up.
I remember seeing some aquarists doing starboard with a gravel cover, on The Reef Tanks, advanced forum. I have also seen a few on RC and Reef sanctuary done in some form of a similar fashion. Several have poured some type of mixture right on the bottom, but thats not for me. We need "Super Link Bev", here. I,m bad with links but can try find you some if that what you're looking for. |

I only keep links that are of interest to me  A BB tank to me is one with only glass on the bottom. You guys gotta find those links yourselves, I'm afraid  Now, if you want reef chemistry links, I'm the go-to person for sure  |
 Very nice Doug!
I really like the faux silicone/sand bottom. It sure doesn't take you long to get something set up - wow, you work fast! I've been puttering along for the past two months, trying to get my display tank wired (finally done!) and plumbed  Getting really sick of it sitting in the middle of my living room... Can't wait to see more pics as your tank progresses  ~Tamara |
bb in an sps tank will be covered in coraline in a few months anyhow.

Just a note to say this tank is no longer, at least with me. Perhaps new pics from its new owner once its sold.
As for me I,m moving on; back to a larger tank. 4ft.L by 3ft.W by 2ft.H Pics to come, some day. |
