Flooding in Calgary :(

Didn't realize you folks down south were being inundated with rain  Saw pics in the newspaper this morning and the damage in some areas looks devastating

As for our weather, it's been cloudy, windy and cool. Hardly any rain in Edmonton at all.

Is everyone okay down there? Hope you are all well and safe

OCDP 06-08-2005 05:26 PM

Haha it has been raining for a week straight.. or 8 days now? Either or. There is flooding in high river, okatokes (sp) places like that.. Calgary is OK , but the Elbow river is slowly filling to the brim , it's weird... they said we've accumulated ? half or more of our annual rain fall lol.. in just a few short days... but yeah, rain is supposed to stop today/tomorrow ... it's still drizzling outside,

There's your weather update . hah

Tarolisol 06-08-2005 05:49 PM

Its pretty crazy and deppressing, it hasnt rained like this for 10 years. Parts of High River have been evacuated. But calgary is mostly fine. Exept for maybe some houses on the elbow but they have enough money to deal with some flood damage

StirCrazy 06-08-2005 11:53 PM

on the flip side Alberta needs rain badly to replenish the growund water than has been getting lower and lower over the last 10 years.

Just a few weeks ago I seen another named lake that had dirt and grass only. This week I see parks (storm water retension areas) with only the tops of goal posts showing and full of smiling ducks.

Tarolisol 06-09-2005 08:13 AM

I like ducks

We really did need the water as stated above. In the past 10 years (since the last floods) Calgary has dried up to all but a desert. I drive by the Bow river everyday and even though the rain has stopped the river continues to climb. We're a bit nervous because the the river is only about a couple of inches away from the tops to the sewage treatment culverts, thats bad news. Thank goodness for the RODI units!

Tonight I'm going to check out the glenmore damn, the water has breached the top for the first time ever!

BCOrchidGuy 06-09-2005 04:47 PM

We're lucky here, when it rains like that we call it spring, summer, fall, or winter. Not to long ago while it was raining a lot the sewers were so full that the water was squirting out of man hole covers like little water park jets, only they were squirting up about 4 feet into the air... Made for interesting driving.

kari 06-09-2005 09:37 PM

Was there children playing under the water spray like on tv when a car hits the fire hydrant

DiscusZ 06-10-2005 01:36 AM

The Damn was over flowing before but this was in the 50's

Delphinus 06-10-2005 10:27 PM

Dam guys, it's "dam". "Damn" means something else.

Delphinus 06-10-2005 10:42 PM

Some pictures of the reservoir from last night.

Are you sure? I'm not so sure. I think this may be the first time it's overflowed uncontrolled. I can't find any info to confirm it spilled over before. If you find anything can you post it?

Gujustud 06-10-2005 11:51 PM

I'm confused, I saw people upset about it, but they continue to live in a place called "High River". Hmmmm....

I was born in Lethbridge myself and got outa there quick!

StirCrazy 06-11-2005 12:47 AM

how far north and east has been getting rain? I am wondering if all my family's farms are getting the water they so desperately need.

thats no good then, well Maybe I will have to make some phone calls and see how this year is going to look for crops.

I know squat about farming but figure this kind of rain doesn't help the farmers or the water table levels.

actually it does, light rain just gets the ground wet in the first few inches, but heavy rain like you had saturates the soil so any more goes deeper and deeper, also causes the rivers, lakes etc to rise again which all increases the amount in the water table.

but it would have been better to get it a month ago befor crops are planted.

Funky_Fish14 06-11-2005 06:54 PM

Edmonton has gotten some rain....a few times there has been good downpoors....but nothing big....like last year lol. Hopefully we get more rain around here.

The farmers are definetly needing this for sure! Over the last few years at my acreage the field has suffered badly...used to get stuff 4ft high...now the highest stuff is 2ft(natural alfalfa and grasses). Our ponds also dried up so much you could drive a truck across them......they used to be 4ft deep....

I hope ya'll dont get flooded though!

ya nothing close on that set up though, if you draw a line on the map they show you from Edmonton, to Loyd, then down to coranation, to red dear then back to Edmonton then go to the middle of that square my family owns about 150 square miles in there. so I can get close with that but not right

Beverly 06-12-2005 12:10 AM

Steve,

Time for a phone call, I guess

StirCrazy 06-12-2005 06:02 AM

Yes, the rains were, or should I say are pretty localized. Its still coming down too. I guess the weather fronts on all sides are just holding the moisture here, until there is no more moisture left! Last night there was flash flooding in Calgary's south west. I heard on the radio that only this morning it has dried up a bit.
I'm debating moving to Vancouver to get some sunshine.

Beverly 06-13-2005 02:33 PM

It's been raining most of the night and into this morning. No signs of it abating. We really need it up here. For the past week and a half, it's been cloudy but with little rain.

Here's a pic of a 1929 flood in Calgary's downtown area. The site said that every year there is a 1 in 100 chance of this happening.

Here's a pic of what we're are on the verge of if the rains continue.

I guess riverfront property isn't all its cracked up to be.

I see now you guys are getting funnel cloud sightings.. be carefull out there.

Steve

Ryan 06-14-2005 02:34 AM

We got 2 inches in an hour lastnight. Funnel clouds as close as picture butte for us taberites and lethbirdge people.

But the local guys that are doing some touching up with thier hunting dogs are just smiling; all this rain raised the water level so there is less places for the pheasants to hide. More points more practice. No one from this area should fail their hunt tests this fall. lol

Murminator 06-15-2005 03:06 PM

what is the weather forecast for Calgary/Red Deer area this weekend?

I think they said 30 to 50% chance of showers for the weekend. I'll take it I guess, its better than the 100% chance from the past two weekends. Mind you this is Calgary, the forcast changes like every hour.

danny zubot 06-16-2005 04:34 PM

As of today they're predicting about 100mm of rain over the weekend. Because the ground is so saturated with moisture they say flooding is still a big issue, and it won't take much rain to swell the rivers again.

City of Calgary
11:01 AM MDT Friday 17 June 2005

Heavy rainfall warning for
City of Calgary continued.

60 to 100 mm of rain is expected through Saturday.

A low pressure system is developing over central Montana this morning and is expected to intensify this afternoon into this evening moving into southern Alberta tonight. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are occurring today over southern Alberta which should become more widespread this afternoon into tonight as more unstable conditions develop. Rain heavy at times is expected to continue tonight especially along the foothills from Calgary north to Rocky Mountain House and Nordegg. Rain will gradually shift north and east into central Alberta on Saturday. General rainfall amounts of 60 to 80 mm are expected over the warning area by midday Saturday with locally higher amounts of 100 mm along the foothills mainly between Calgary and Rocky Mountain House.

Farther south, in areas hard-hit by last weeks storm, rain is expected as well, but the amounts will be less with values in the 40 to 60 mm range, still significant but not of the same magnitude as the rains expected farther north. However any additional rainfall In this area will further heighten flooding concerns in the area.

OCDP 06-17-2005 10:47 PM

just heard the flood warning for some river lol, forgot the name... but the flood warnings are now in effect!

AJ_77 06-17-2005 11:30 PM

That was the EBS flood warning on the radio, for the Highwood River and the town of High River. Aptly named town, don't you think?

DiscusZ 06-18-2005 11:05 PM

It was quite nasty last night/early AM.. I left work at almost 1am, I was going South down Crowchild and just before the offramp to Glemmore all lanes were underwater you had to get over to the left lane as it was the shallowest.. the fair right lane had at lease 12" of water but probably alot more.

Got near my end of town near the city limits and one intersection was almost under water (fair end of Lake Chaparral, there was litterally a lake in one intersection) :)

Its quite nasty.,

AndyL 06-18-2005 11:59 PM

Well the bow is looking pretty big... Driving down canyon meadows, the section between macleod and deerfoot, everyone was pulled over looking into the river valley at the new lake.

Coming back, it sure looked like the WTP at the calf robe was about to have a whole lot of extra water in it's system.

If any southern alberta farmer complains about the drought this year...

Andy
