hitchhiker ID help

not sure what i'm seeing in my tank but it sounds kinda crazy i know. i'm seeing a small disk that almost looks like a paint chip with curled edges about the size of the end of a pencil eraser. didn't think too much of it before but last night i saw about a 3/4" long extension coming outta it blowing around in the current...

anyone have any idea what this might be??

Its hard to tell without a picture of it, but my guess is a mollusk of some type.

It looks like a red upside down mushroom. Got any red mushrooms in your tank that might have become dislodged?

not that i know of! should i do anything special (like put it on some rock or turn it over) for it?

fishface,

Not that I have actually done this, but I have read that putting the mushroom in a small container of rubble in a low flow area of the tank will allow the mushroom to attach to the rubble. Once it has attached, in a few days or a week or so, you can place it anywhere in your tank that is suitable.

Try browsing this thread, there is a site linked in it that may help you to discover other UFO's (unidentified floating objects) in your tank.

I have found that placing a piece of nylon stocking over the container and using an elastic band to hold it in place allows you to put it just about anywhere in the tank rather than trying to find a calm spot. I find shotglasses work good for this.
