The new 120....***UPDATED*** Mixing Station***
Hey Guys.........
The new 120 is here and I thought I would share..... Tank, Stand and sump http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_0901.JPG This 48x24x24 will have 2 Mak 4's running the show. One for the sump, That will enter the tank via two 3/4 Sea Swirls and one will be a closed loop with a Super Squirt. You can see 2 drains in the back for the closed loop. Each of the 3 strainers drain into 2 lines then to one pump this will cut down on the velocity of the water being sucked. 4 returns for this 2 centre at the back and 2 in the rocks. The ones in the rocks will be split with Loc Line. A 36gal sump with 2 100 micron bags. Why 2???? The flow will be split into 2 bags for ease of change. I figer one will have to be changed often but 2, 1/2 the time. There is a Stockman pipe(Aquasilencer) in the over flow I take it out for a laugh it looks just like an Austin Powers ***** pump..... You should have seen the neighbors faces......   http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_0902.JPG The sump http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_0903.JPG Ill post more when I can...... |

Definately keep us posted. What are your plans for stocking the tank?
|
well.......
the old tank http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...3_0811-med.JPG CHANGES....... Finer sand Use this rock as a base change to Figi or Tonga I think  Fish........right now its a grave yard........I have blamed it on the canister hence the change.......not cutting it to much work to keep up to it.... |
Well look at that - it just showed up at your house all by itself!!
Lookin good, buddy! |
Looks great. Can't wait to see it in action.
There is an eerie ghost in the tank, though, who looks as if he's trying to take your picture. I hope you're OK with that  (seems like a reasonably benign ghost .. perhaps a former paparazzi) |
YUP......
One thing I can tell you is that my WIFE dident ask for it......... To funny.....a ghost.......never noticed him.....Dam good looking one though..... Hope he likes salt water.......... |
Well....stand ready for paint. I will be taking it up to Rob at Majestic Aquariums......
http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_1801.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_1802.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_1803.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_1804.JPG The painting should take about a week or so.....BLACK Then it's time for the wet test.... |
Looks great,
Where did you get your bags from? |
cpenner...
I got them from a place here called Wai's in Calgary but the brand is Ecosystem Aquarium |
The stand looks good... i think.
Its hard to see when the pics are so small.  |
sorry bout that......
Pics fixed...... |
wow!! Flip up top could come in handy.
|
YUP....... Gets it right up out of your way when working on the tank....
It's a little tricky though, Those hindges only come in 14" door is 20" JUST sits up there. I think I have to add a little weight to the top end. I little bug I have to work out yet. |
So heres how I fixed the bug........
I took an old pry bar that I got from my Grandfather many many years ago......flatened it out and routered a space for it at the top of the door on the inside.........works great .......and a piece of history inbeded in the tank stand to boot........Kinda cool  http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_04_1901.JPG |
Cool design Richard. Sorry I wasn't here to meet you @ delivery. You put alot of time and effort into this project, and it looks very good! Looking forward to spraying it for you!
Rob |
WOW..........
That comming from somebody that does this stuff for a living......THANK-YOU............. |
Hello All.......
I have a new found respect for people that choose to put in a new tank. The work involved is incredible. So lets get to the tank: Here is the backing I have gone with. It's vinyl with clear mac-tac. I had 4 hands helping it went well and with about one hour of working out the bubbles it was smooth as glass. If this is the look your after, I highly recommend it.... The Back http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0301-med.JPG In The Tank http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0303-med.JPG Full Frontal $%^&$ http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_05_0302.JPG The stand is (as you can see) back from paint. Great job Rob (Majestic) thank you Well the tank is in and running, sofar only a couple of loses still a day to day thing. Will update soon with pics and how this move was done..... |
Richard, nice job. What are the three way intakes for? Or why are there strainers on the returns?
|
Hey Troy......
Yes....there intakes for the closed loop. 3 strainers to 2 1in lines that Y into a Mak-4. I split it up this way to cut down on the sucking power in the tank. |
Well.......
As you can see, it's in place.....the move went well http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0403-med.JPG Some Plumbing http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0401-med.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0402-med.JPG Under the hood http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_05_0604.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0606-med.JPG OMG... There be WATER in that Tank.... http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0607-med.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0602-med.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0608-med.JPG There she be ...not the best pic  http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_0601-med.JPG Well thats it for now....... maybe another post in a month or so..... I'm still waiting for the tank to crash...... Testing every day,50gal of water ready to go if I need it and more mixing Thanks for looking...... |
That looks amazing Richard! You must be very proud of yourself to be able to pull off that complex a project!
Awesome! |
thanks Rob....
Well yes...I think so, still not to sure about the whole thing yet, waiting for something to go wrong........ The work involved is incredible, my hats off to anybody that has done something like this. |
Looks amazing.
I wish I knew how to plumb like that. I find that the most frustrating part sometimes.... :) |
cpener......
I would like to know how I did it to...... All I can say is I have one hell of a box of extra plumbing parts... Put some together, put it in place, then swear yell and cry  , take it apart and try again.....thats the secret to my plumbing..... Thank you very much for your comments....... |
Nice piles! (Rock that is...)
It looks to be coming together very well - good work! |
Did you have to change the door swing?
Tank looks great btw!! |
Thanks Allan......
Still need to tweek the rock a little I think i can make it better. thanks Muck...... You meen the office doors??? No..... they are a double glass door, the one will only open a foot or so and the other works fine..... |

Well...
Here are the moon lights..... These are LED 14 of them (4000mcd, 470 nanometer) each have a lens over them spreading light about 180 degrees. http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...05_05_2501.JPG I have mounted them on 1" aluminum tube http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_2502-med.JPG http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...5_2601-med.JPG They are all hooked up to a Lunar Tracker witch puts them on a 29 day cycle http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...ar_tracker.jpg I'll try to get a good pic of the tank at its brightest....... Cheers |
What does the lunar tracker do, adjust moonrise and moonset times? Or does it also adjust intensity? Where did you pick it up from? Looks pretty keen.
|

Hey Tony...... Just intensity......I control the other by a timmer..... got them from here.... http://www.thelebos.com/index_moonlight.html |
Cool stuff!
|
Hi Medican ,Been following your thread and the setup looks great , lot of effort which seems to be coming together.Beautiful tank ........
I may be talking through my hat and in no way do I want to rain on your parade but I noticed in a recent posting where you showed your moonlight array (wow ! ), that you had mounted them on alumimum. I am one of the older members getting back into marines after a good many years but do recall a marine importer in the U.K. who initially used aluminum framed tanks and lost a whole room of livestock................. Obviously the frames would easily allow contamination and your lights are not in contact with the salt water but please ensure you have no drips happening as I believe aluminun can be highly toxic. Looking forward to more photo's and details of your progress. .................Dave. |
Thanks Dave.....
Good to know...I have sprayed them with a marine boat paint, about 5 coats, but I will watch them close just the same.... But at the same time ..... dont want to take ANY chances.... I think I will start looking at a new mounting system.... Thanks for the heads up..... |

RO/DI Storage and mixing:
Here is what I use, minus the Mag 2 that sits in the middle for filling mix tank, buckets and circulating http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...6_1301-med.JPG Fresh on the left, you can see the float switch and it is all run by a timer so the ro/di unit will run about 1 min every hour through the night till full then the float over rides everything http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...6_1303-med.JPG And mixed on the right, able to mix with a Mag 2 and a heater holder near the upper output. http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...6_1302-med.JPG |
