I think this is the third time this has been posted. Bob is already aware of this study...

Yes I have seen it, and I agree that it is readable. However that does not help me when I see all the spelling errors our posters make. And really does it hurt to be a little careful when posting something for the world to see.

Well, sometimes it does. If you submitted a resume to me and it had a spelling error, it would get tossed. So it does pay to take a minute and proof read what you've typed.

Ryan 04-03-2005 01:25 AM

Ya okay a resume but i mean an oline board aobut reefing. If i were jusding it would be about how crrect the information on that board was. Not the spelling. You are going to ry to tell me that you wont attempt to read a board that is full to the brim of top notch information but it has spelling mistakes? I dont think so.

myself being a teachers son,am very picky about spelling. My girlfriend is a terrible speller and I bug her all the time. I feel it is a good practise to spell correctly because you never know...

BTW, the post wasn't directed at anyone at all (ie. boB).

It was just something I stumbled across that was kind of neat.

I hope it doesn't end up causing a heated dabate.

Maybe they should make a program like word perfect. It corrects the mistakes for ya , But that might be a little too lazy.

As an academic tutor, I've read some really poorly-written papers. However, this is understandable since most of my students are from overseas & have only been studying in English for a couple of years. I've also told my elementary & high schoolers that you "play like you practice." So if they don't worry about spelling & using proper grammar when they're doing stuff like posting on forums, then they'll most likely pick up bad habits that will be harder to break when they are doing it for "real" and it'll cost them marks on their assignments & exams & maybe a job in the future (Brad's resume example).

I made a conscious decision to try to not correct people on their spelling errors on these forums, but seriously, some postings are hard to understand. If you have something to say or write, then do it in a form that's clear & understandable. Nobody's asking for perfection, just a little more effort to help get your point across.

JMO,

Anthony
