Heater question
 

I have a 20g with just water in it no rock or sand yet, i have a brand new tronic 50watt that has been running full time for 2 weeks with out shuting off. the best temp is 74 when i put my hand in it feels real warm. could it be shot? or is my thermometer shot? Package says good to 50g.

Maybe grab a cheap thermometer and double check it.

I don't believe that a 50W heater would heat a 50Gal tank.
I have a 100W Ebo in a 50Gal right now and it won't raise the temp over 75°F.
Think I will have to switch it for my 200W in my 15Gal tank... :mrgreen:

Anyways maybe a 50W heater is underpowered for your 20Gal tank.
I would take Arty's advice and test with a different themometer.
If the readings the same you may want to get a higher wattage heater.

I second that motion. you need to upgrade your heater. I am also using an ebo on my 33gal, and it works good. I have had problems with other heaters breaking, and boiling my fish, but the ebo has been fine since i got it.

See, I've been using Tronic heaters for qutie some time now and I love them. I have a 200watt in 33 gal and it's been great. I also have a 200 watt and a 50 watt backup in my 16 gal nano and not troubles. IMHO you need a bigger heater. A 200 watt is only like $5 more than a 50 watt anyways.

What size Ebo are you using? 100W? 200W?

i belive mine is a 125w

As far as I know, the rule of thumb on heaters is use between 3 to 5 watts per gal.

The wattage of a heater depends on the temperature difference between the tank and the room. I have a heater box in front of me that states if there is a 10 degree difference between the room and the temperature you want to achieve the heater size should be a minimum of 80 watts. That is for a 20 gallon tank. For a 20 degree difference the minimum requirement rises to 187 watts. That is in degrees Fahrenheit of course. :mrgreen:

I have always heard 3-5 watts but I go with 10 if I can to be safe. I am goin to have 2 250w ebo jager on my 55, 77 and 20 combo, I am also puting a 100w in the 20 because it will be the farthist away. With the MH and PC lighting that should be lots of heat to keep things nice and warm in the house and tanks, mabe even help to save some gas.
