damaged lps

have an open brain that had a lobo fall into it , there is some tissue damage and its getting a bit worse its been about 5 days since it happened . Is dipping it in rx helpful at all? or should I leave it be / It sucks as I have had this coral for 7 years . I will post a pic here in a bit when I shut my pump off . Also do micro brittles pose any harm to it ? I have millions of them under all my corals , I know they dont damage corals more wondering if they could be irritating the coral.

here are the pics

What does the damage look like ? When you separated them did you blow off the open brain with a turkey baster to remove any stinging nematocysts? If I was gonna dip it I would try a dip in iodine , it will help to kill off any infection.

Not that it helps you now , but when my open brain was stung badly I was told by an experienced reefer to run the area that was stung under the tap ,and gently brush with a soft toothbrush. I was a little hesitant to do this but it worked great and the brain recovered very quickly. I think the freshwater kills off the nematocysts and stops them from further damaging the stung coral.

I blew the coral off as soon as I seen it . It was just that white stuff that the corals get when they fight . The lobo was so small to and took no damage of course the $10 coral is fine lol . It has 4-5 other mouths so hopefully it stops receding soon . Separated it from everything else and I will leave it be and see what happens . , I even glue down almost everything because of this happening in the past . Guess that's a sign my new aquarium I got built was needed tank is to full atm , that extra space doe

Craigdillman 04-19-2015 05:02 PM

Id dip it in rx or Iodine to prevent infection and make sure to feed it a bit more so it can recover had the same thing happen to my brain last year new sps frag fell in it and it died in a month act quicker than me dip and feed it should work

I'd leave it alone. The damage isn't that bad. I'd just gently turkey baste it once a day to remove any dead flesh/sand.

Skimmer Juice 04-20-2015 02:04 AM

its actually toast as of this morning  it's still in the tank but its pretty much done for .

Myka 04-20-2015 02:11 AM

Say what??? From that little spot? The little spot on the front that's like 1/2"?? Did I miss something??? That's really surprising.

Skimmer Juice 04-20-2015 02:36 AM

literally overnight . I took that pic lastnight . I will snap a quick pick

Skimmer Juice 04-20-2015 02:42 AM

and keep in mind it was a couple days it had just a tiny bit of flesh reduction with nothing left on it from the lobo fight , and then overnight its basically disintegrated . Have it isolated should I take it out at this point ? Don't want any of the dying coral do any damage

That's not coming back buddy sorry to say it , like I mentioned in the text they usually heal well as long as theirs no mouth damage , I'm actually surprised it went overnight the pic didn't make it seem that bad ..... is it possible something irritated it overnight (shrimps , crabs , asterinas etc)

Sucks dude :(

Ryanerickson 04-20-2015 03:31 AM

Sorry for your loss. Any chance we can see pics of your brain looks very nice.

GoFish 04-20-2015 04:26 AM

If I were you after removing all the dead flesh that you find a shady place in your tank to let it sit for a while (maybe 2 months) I had an LPS recover from certain death once, from 100% skeleton to full recovery in about 6 months or less. Seriously thought it was dead but there must have been something inside the skeleton in the mouth area that was still alive.
Maybe a light iodine/tank water dip before forgetting about it?

Sorry to see this happen

And what Ryan said ^^^ that brain in the background looks noiiice

Myka 04-20-2015 04:27 AM

Bummer. Sorry to say I'd take it out too.

Skimmer Juice 04-20-2015 04:57 AM

Have the coral in a breeder box of to the side away from everything . Gave it a dip keep removing dead stuff from it and I will leave it for now . As for anything irritating it the only thing would be mini brittles I have about 1 million of them they are under all my corals when I lift them up . Other than that asterina stars white and the dark ones have a Harlequin currently eating those but I always find them on my corals and remove them when I see them . The lobo only hurt maybe 1/2 inch of flesh when it first happened , it just deteriorated so fast .

^^^ that's a beauty! I hope the lobo's on lock down free and clear of that baby.
Best of luck with the seriously injured one, fingers crossed

Skimmer Juice 04-20-2015 05:08 AM

I'm actually trying to sell the lobo right now lol . Just got a new tank made it's shallow and wider 36lx14hx24 so I don't need to stack anything . Also going to move my rainbow wellso into a tank almost by itself as its getting huge and dont want anything harming that .

Ryanerickson 04-20-2015 05:09 AM

Wow thanks very nice!

jason604 04-21-2015 02:40 AM

The rainbow brain looks like it's drawn with a water color paintbrush. Just wow...

Duncans n' Dendros 05-31-2015 11:42 PM

I've seen that coral in person and I can say that it is by far the most impressive coral I've seen in a tank. The shear size and the colors are amazing. The pictures don't do it justice.

Crazy!!

NU-2reef 06-01-2015 02:50 PM

$60 bucks!!! Nice score! I wonder what it's worth today?

Yours looks better than the attached image!!!!

Myka 06-01-2015 09:23 PM

That's US pricing. They pay GOBS of money for stuff that we pay a few hundred for.

Skimmer Juice 06-02-2015 01:56 AM

I don't know I think the one in that pic is nicer . The other would look really nice under my lighting. I would also like to see it puffed up . Does that $1300 cost mostly relate to size ?

It has just as much to do witht he size as with the color combinations - it's a bit unusual, even for a rainbow.
