How much would you pay for this plate coral?
Lately my lfs are pricing corals way out of whack, or maybe it's me. Can you one please tell me ehat you would pay for this plate coral. http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/...psy7ompwgg.png

In my town they'd try selling for $200
I'd say $30 is fair |
30 is what I would pay but it's a lot more than that. Pricing is so messed up. I just don't get it.
|
40 mabie how much is it
|
200 for a green plated coral. What is going on. Is it me or is that just ridiculous. I love to shop local and I love to give my hard earned money to support local business but when it's so out of whack one has to take a step back and think why?! I guess someone will pay for it but not me.

This post isn't out to crucify anyone or any place. I understand business needs to make money. I don't mind paying premium for ultra grade corals but knowing how much it should cost in my opinion $30 and with the Canadian dollar dropping possible $50 is perfectly fine, but when the price is excessively high I really wonder why and who is putting the number behind the price? Maybe I am being unreasonable and if I am please some one let me know.
I hang out at the fish store as much as the next reef junkie. I don't get why they will price them so high and watch the coral deteriorate until it's bleached and not worth anything than having an employee try to sell it to you at the price which they should've put it the first place. This happens countless times. It's really a shame. |
It came in as red when it was purple now it's brown might be time to invest in some new lighting over the most important tanks or change halides
|
J&L Aquatics does not specialize in corals though - their corals are mediocre (on the wow factor) at best. To be fair though, red Plates tend to really fade with shipping, and if it IS indeed red it would draw a lot more money than the brownish/purplish color it appears. I'm not sold that it is red though. The photo is terrible. I wouldn't buy it for any price because Plates take up so much sand space I have to really love it to buy it. I think $60-80 is a fair price (I voted $50). I think it's nice, but it's not really nice. If it IS red, $120 is a reasonable price, but for that price it needs a better pic, and some time to color up.

Don't get me wrong, I love that store and I wouldn't traded for any other. The dry goods pricing is wicked and the service I get from them is second to none. Unfortunately the live stock side has not been very stellar. |
I sell plates like that around $60 .
If there multi color(3 or more) about $120 |
$50-75. There is no red, orange, yellow that I can see.

Are you promoting the sale of corals for an online business without paying the sponsorship fee? Tisk Tisk. ;) |
Lol absolutely not.. Just stating what I would sell it for;-)
|
yea 30-50 depending how good it looks when I'm there
|
$20 :)
|
It can also be related to the wholesaler, or how much the retailer paid for it. There are wholesalers out there that spend more type with the camera than actually finding nice coral. I've seen it many times, crazy corals online then when you see them in person it's common stuff renamed and hyped up with a crazy price tag.
It won't last, a few people will get burned but in the end the customer sets the price. |
I'd pay 50 max for that one. It's a very normal plate I agree.
Not to steal your thread Rich . I paid $129 for this one: (looks much better in person) http://i1017.photobucket.com/albums/...ps302529a8.jpg |

Geesh, We sell that exact plate (comes in quite often) for $60 (now marked up to $75:mrgreen:) and multicolor plates for around $95 (now marked up to $120:mrgreen:) lol thanks guys :pppp

I stepped out of LFS' for around a year...maybe a little over.
Just got sick of buying and had such a build up of equipment and supplies that I didnt't need to. I've been going in again as I'm planning a new tank in the next year or so and was completely blown away by how much more corals are selling for (I live in Coquitlam too) at both of the main LFS around here. It makes sense I guess. Every year their are fewer and fewer fish and coral... |
