T5 lighting….what do you have?

So with my current full change up on the tank i have decided to change up the lighting as well, i wasn't getting the greatest results for my corals after a year and i know way, here is the current lighting set up:

6 bulb t5 fixture

5 supper blue and one fiji purple

now looking at everything, there was no real coral growth, just had the blue look i liked. but now i have realized that it needs to be changed.
So what are your bulb combos, and what gives you the best look with coral growth?

I also run Fiji purple and super blue, but I put in one white, I am also interested on what other people have

Slyguy00 12-22-2014 06:15 PM

I run one actinic, 4 super blues and 1 fiji pink and get amazing results.

Doug 12-22-2014 06:52 PM

4 super blues
1 coral+
1purple+

Coral Hoarder 12-22-2014 07:51 PM

3 super blue and one blue plus get some great results

I also agree with this combo.

Would like to see some tank pics along with the recommendation since my expectation of good growth might not be the same as another reefer.

2 Fiji purples, 1 super blue, 1 autunic With a couple of 12 " Magenta stunner strips
on my 33 gallon. No sps just softies & zoes.

How's the growth ? With that combo you only have 1 "stand alone" bulb. The purples and actinic are supplemental bulbs. I would think the par would be pretty low , but I guess for softies and some Lps it would be ok.

Seems to be a good combo. My sps has great colour and some that were not doing great under led,s are now.

To my eyes there seems to be a lack of white. I was debating removing one superblue and adding another coral plus.

.

The corals seem happy but the growth is slow, maybe I'll take out the atinic and put in another super blue.

Amadod2 12-23-2014 04:23 AM

this is great feedback, all we need are some pics guys ;)

Ranchu50 12-23-2014 06:47 AM

T5

I am also following this thread.
I am running a rsm 250 with six T5 bulbs!

Is there a difference in the T5 light manufacturers?

Seems like for the colours you guys are mentioning, they are the Korallen-Zucht brand?

Slyguy00 12-23-2014 08:18 AM

Here's a few pics. As I said 4 blue plus 1 actinic and 1 Fiji pink

Thank you, much appreciated:smile:

I run agua medic 6 light T5 my original light setup made my tank feel dark which was 2 lagoon blue, 2 pink and 2 actinic but that setup brought out the colours

My new setup I went for a brighter look

2 midday
1 actinic
1 pink
2 lagoon blue

My tank is much brighter which I like and have good coral growth but it is a softie tank too. The downside is because my tank is so bright I no longer see the colours pop out

Amadod2 12-23-2014 04:59 PM

that tank looks great!!!!

Amadod2 12-23-2014 05:16 PM

mine would be just pure blue

but i will update once i get my new bulbs.

what bulb combo do you guys think will get the best results:

4 supper blues, 1 coral +, 1 Purple +
or
3 super blues, 2 new generations, 1 fiji purple

as these are the two setups im looking at

Slyguy00 12-23-2014 05:21 PM

I believe it's more personal preference then anything. Sure different combos may give you a little better growth but I think for the most part it's just personal preference. But I would go with your first choice.

Amadod2 12-23-2014 05:24 PM

starting this January im changing a lot of things on my tank, and im going to do a journal for follow up, im going to change my lights, i bought a new sump, i have ordered miracle mud for a refuge, etc
its going to be interesting

I love a bright tank but the downside is the colours disappear in a brightly lit tank

looks like you have a few white bulbs? What combo do you run?

Attachment 13625

5 superblues and 1 fiji pink

Dearth 12-23-2014 07:10 PM

Nice Amadod2

Amadod2 12-23-2014 07:12 PM

thanks, but its not getting that much coral growth, some of the corals are growing great but not all of them, i cant wait to start my tank journal

Dearth 12-23-2014 07:16 PM

That is the trade off trying to find the right colour spectrum to bring out colours while promoting growth I sacrificed colour for brightness and growth

Amadod2 12-23-2014 07:20 PM

im going to add more white to mine, as i only get to enjoy looking at it in the evening, so at that point only the supperblues will be on giving me the look i like and the growth during the day
