I got my Truck back and I'm VERY HAPPY

This thread is only for anyone who wants to read about how happy I am

Back in 2003, I put a 355HP crate motor, 3:42 Posi and 700R4 in my truck
For those of you who have no idea, we're talking over 10K for my setup

It used to pretty much crush anything without power, and some with power. Pretty kool considering it weighs over 2 Tons

Recently it's lost shifting abilities, but shouldn't have as the trans is basically bullet-proof

I'd read about a valve body issue with my trans, so I had a mechanic buddy pull things apart and we found some broken /messed up stuff
I won't get into the details to bore you non-car peeps, but suffice it to say I was very happy to find the accumulator spring had snapped in half, and the valve body was very gummed up with valves sticking and such

Since getting my truck back tonight I feel like a fat kid eating smarties for the first time !!!
I've been driving it so gently for so long that I forgot what it feels like to have power again and never realised it was broken :surprise:

All I have to do now is avoid tickets and burning up my tires :twised::twised::twised:

Ok, that is all
Carry on

Pics? What kind of truck

gregzz4 08-13-2014 04:18 AM

It's no show truck, just my sleeper
'78 GMC Heavy Half Ton
Don't have any handy pics

This is not my pic
This is a shortbox version of my longbox
Kinda same color, but mine has a white roof ... thanks to the last car dealarship that painted it
They call the paint Sierra
Kinda fitting as that's my model ...

You'll see the paint I picked in the engine pic below
It's a nicer copper mix

I'll have to find some pics of it to post, but it's basically a rust bucket right now as plans kinda went sideways ......

This is the engine when it was clean

I am not sure how to take your 'big engine small car type of kid' comment ...

Does that mean you want to go fast, but can't park ???

I am the safest driver on the road. I-follow-speed-limit-in-construction-zone-and-gets-the-finger type of safe. Just like to make sure that I got enough power to run away in case of a zombie apocalypse  and i can park better than most of the cars I see in parking lot. I know what the lines are for which many struggles to understand

And your truck looks fantastic (given its age). And the 2nd picture is car p**n.

gregzz4 08-13-2014 04:39 AM

Glad to hear you've got your new driving skills tuned dude
Too many new drivers think they know it all and scare the rest of us
Just try to not hold up traffic there 'mr safe guy'

The pic of the truck is not mine, but gives you an idea of what my monster looks like

Bah, it's not worth looking at right now

I'd have to scan pics from when I started the bodywork, but the idea is it's a rustbucket
The front end is all nice paint, and the rest is just garbage
Thanks for asking though ....

I'm just glad to have my hotrod back :whoo:

Tyler, you can come drive mine for a few minutes if you like

Ram3500 08-13-2014 05:31 AM

Glad you have your beast back ! I still miss my 5.9 cummins but it wasn't the best commuter :( My tundra is nice but it feels more like driving a car. Nothing like driving a big loud truck oh the good old days

gregzz4 08-13-2014 01:25 PM

Isn't that Tundra a 5.7 ?
Maybe it drives like a car, but you could still 'tweak' a few things

Everytime I get in our new Camaro I wonder why I haven't bought a new Silverado or Sierra yet

Madreefer 08-13-2014 01:41 PM

Yup nothing like lots of power. I just recently traded my truck in for a new one. But wow the gas gauge moves as fast as the speedometer. All the power has actually made me slow down cuz I'm tired of going to the gas station.

toytech 08-13-2014 02:32 PM

my car just went from 280hp to 150 hp in 15 minutes , wastegate actuator blew up so I had to bypass the turbo , sad. Makes me appreciate how fast it was , and how slow shipping can be. Is gas mileage still a thing? Lets see over the winter a few times I burned 10 gallons and drove 50 miles in that time , is that good gas mileage ?

I thought this was the title of a song!

Knowing Greg, and not knowing anything about trucks, I opened this thread thinking it sounded lit the title of a song. Country song, that is...

Oh, but wait, this is the reverse of a country music song, Either way, I'm happy for you Greg. Nice truck, btw....

Bblinks 08-13-2014 07:22 PM

When are we putting a 454 with 3.73 in thur buddy?

Bblinks 08-13-2014 07:23 PM

Umm, no
It's enough of a gas pig as it is :surprise:

Sorry for the shaky iPhone vid
Besides it probably being illegal to record and drive, I'm sure it's a big fine for recording while driving, and speeding like hell
The speedo is in MPH, not metric
And if your viewing method is as crappy as my PC, you'll probably have to play it more than once for it to play properly

It's awesome thanks, after having it shift @ 4000RPM for TOO long

Great to see you can play it. Thank you Sheena
I'm kinda new to Youtube and wasn't sure you all could view it

gregzz4 08-14-2014 06:11 AM

I'll have to post a better vid of a 0-60, or rather a 0-whatever top speed I can get to without getting in trouble - possibly a freeway vid up to max speed ???
Mostly for me, but also for the car guys and gals

Maybe I'll get inspired and do the same for our '69 Camaro RS/SS and our '11 Camaro RS

Lots of fun to be had before summer ends

Madreefer 08-14-2014 12:30 PM

Just be safe, you should get a go pro so that you can set it and drive without having to fiddle with a camera!

Get on those Camaro's dude, seriously!!! I'm surprised you haven't messed with them...lol...

You don't usually see much gains with this stuff on stock engines (unless it was a bad design from the factory), but you will be glad you did all this when you drop in the turbos! What boost are they running at? Is the factory fuel pump and injectors going to keep up or are they part of the package?

we ordered the stage 1 kit, it should come with everything needed to get to about 470hp to the wheels.
https://www.gtmotorsports.com/produc...roductid=17253

the car was on the dyno for about 6 hours last week and with everything bolted on and a custom tune we hit about 264 hp right now, the funny thing is from factory it came with 330 hp and with the add on's i should have been around 380 ish but it is what it is i guess

i want to stay under 500 hp so i don't have to start throwing money at the tranny from blowing up:lol: from what i have read, the factory automatic tranny is only good for about 500 hp before one need to start moding then.

Was that 264hp at the wheels though? I hear ya on the tranny. Back in the day I had a modded 88 Mustang Cobra and it didn't take long before the factory transmission was toast and I had to buy a tremec TKO which was a huge hit to the wallet but not unexpected. Ever since I always make sure I read up on a vehicles factory capabilities before deciding what to mod and what not to. Now I drive a '13 Jeep Rubicon, so while not a rocket by any means the mods are endless, unfortunately my wallet (and wife) aren't. Are you going to try to get the G37 done before the snow flies?

Good stuff! Ya, you have to watch the hp otherwise you start having to deal with suspension mods, once you start, it doesn't stop!

I'm doing my headers and exhaust next year. I'm not looking for hp gains, just more rumble.

Those are odd results on your dyno, did you run before the tune? Or is that 330 at the crank, which to your wheels would have been lower stock. I know mine is lower at the wheels, even though it's sold as 426 hp. I don't recall the difference though 20-30 less give or take.

toytech 08-15-2014 12:51 AM

Calgary is at high elevation , hp numbers are all tested at factory at sea level at ideal temp and humidity , sucks but true . Turbos will help a lot , if you don't hit target numbers just crank up the boost!

True enough, I always watch the tflcars.com reviews and while they don't dyno for Hp they do the 0-60 runs at high elevation in Colorado and the times are always way under spec. I don't recall the vehicle (high end) but they took the same car and driver and tested at sea level California and then again in Colorado and it was a 3 second difference. On a good note though everyone around you has the same handicap.

ya we did run it on the dyno before the tune

baseline runs was 259.4 and after the tune 264.7:shocked!: i was reading that i could be losing around 35% of the power from the crank to the wheels

there was just nothing to gain and the fuel and air mix was around 12 to a peak of 14 something so it was still running safe without going to lean

the only way to get really power from these car are force induction, going to only run 7 to 8 psi so i don't have to start playing around with tranny mods or engine internals. but i am sure this will go out the window the fist day a civic pulls up to me and leaves me in his dust lol i have seem so crazy things those guys are pulling from their engines

here's the killer, i was looking at the lotus evora or the bmw m4 both were around 94k mark but i wanted to save some money and bought the g37. by the time i am done with this car i may not be that far off the price:laluot_08: some times i really wish i think things though instead of flying of the handle and just doing it:redface:

That's the fun thing about cars though, making it your own, the way you want it.

And the crazy thing is, when you go to sell, you'll likely have to take everything off anyway....keep all your original parts....lol
