Vehicles are frustrating...
Although I should have expected this to happen
I went to fire up the old suburban so I could relocate my cargo trailer in front of my garage and my starter decided to kick the bucket.... Now I have to buy 3 batteries, and a starter :( |
Why 3 batts?
|
Well I had to buy 2 for my trailer before and now I have to buy a third for the burban
|
Were you cranking with a dead battery, or it just wouldn't start at all?
|
You shouldn't have to replace the batt and the starter. Should be one or the other. Sounds like something else is going on
|
the starter was on its way out and the battery is toast from sitting for too long without ever charging it
|
Yes, if you don't use a battery, it must be charged, minimum every 6 weeks.
Batteries always self discharge. These days you have a computer and a radio which have parasitic draws. You can now buy chargers that vary the frequency of the voltage so that some of the lead sulfate will fall off/get dissolved into the sulfuric acid. Bring your battery to me and we will find out if this works. Not all batteries will be rejuvenated. Cost you a frag only if it works lol |
Ya I borrowed one of the fancy chargers from my buddy, the battery is 6yrs old anyways so I figure it's time for a new one anyways
|
Well at least you should be back on the road after spending less than $1K. My Japanese import '92 Hilux Surf (4Runner with diesel engine & steering wheel on the right side) blew an o-ring on the injector pump & started spewing diesel fuel early last November. I don't have a garage, just a carport & it was getting a little too cold to be spending any time repairing that. I got as far as removing the injector pump which meant pulling the whole front off the engine, (radiator, timing belt, etc. etc.) to get the damned thing off. The o-ring itself is probably worth less than $5, but the labour involved is insane. A new pump is over $1700, an overhaul (if you can find someone to do it) is $1000..... and because it's an EFI pump, they can't test it after overhaul... Seal kit is hard to source since it's a Japanese Denso pump, pretty much identical to a Bosch VE pump, but trying to match part numbers to make sure it's the right kit is annoyingly difficult.
And all this after I had to fix a cracked head on the darn thing a couple of years ago! Thought it should be good for another 300,000 Kms after that. Anyhow, I ended up buying a new vehicle. I'll try to get a seal kit & fix the old Surf once the weather warms up again. I now have a $30K o'ring sitting in the driveway! |
Mike, is it just an O ring you need? You can't take out the old and get a new viton O ring the same size?
Whats involved with a whole kit? different size O rings? |

Here's the pump with the offending seal, which is inaccessible in situ since it's right up against the engine block. The o-ring was hard, completely flat & came out in two pieces. https://r4izdw.dm1.livefilestore.com...68e.JPG?psid=1 https://r4izdw.dm2304.livefilestore....69e.JPG?psid=1 This is the one on the other side of the pump. Same size & it was not leaking, but showed signs of cracking & imminent failure. Would not have lasted too much longer either. This one I could replace with pump on the engine. https://r4izdw.dm2301.livefilestore....75e.JPG?psid=1 Apparently the new low sulphur diesel fuel they sell us these days contributes to accelerated failure of older diesel injection pump seals. https://r4izdw.dm2304.livefilestore....78e.JPG?psid=1 |
So ya, defiantly my starter, starter won't even spin with a brand new battery, pulled it apart and she was burnt up pretty good
|
Too bad spitfire, hope the starter in the burb is easily accessible.

Read up on counter electromotive force  Strangely enough with less battery capacity/ the slower the starter turns the more amperage it will draw. I have seen some Good ones/ made a few good ones drove a machine with partially seized engine into the shop on the starter caught it on fire  |

Mike have u tried using a during style seal for the pump? Pm me the details on the pump we have a guy who used to work in diesel shop for 15 years. If both those seals look poor I would be a little concerned about the other seals in the pump. |

I picked one up from a wrecker so hopefully it works, for how much I use the Burban I'm not gonna spend the money on a new one ( it haven't left my yard in 2.5 years) once I move I'll probably end up fixing it up tho as it needs a new front clip and a new seal on the rear axle |
Tapatalk won't let me quote you blue tang..., only your posts. It's quite weird
Anywho I read into cemf a bit back when I was into overpowered electric rc cars Traxxas slash 4wd w/mmm brushless @ 22.2v FTW. Until it blew all my after market drive train to pieces |
Vehicles are frustrating...
So new starter is in, turns over fine, won't start....
Using 4x4's as pry bars I managed to inch the 3ton pos into my garage so hopefully some warmth will help it start Tomorrow I'm gonna check for spark as I know it's not a fuel problem unless it's an "old" fuel problem It ran fine about a month ago |
Maybe the condensation in gas tank froze, so warming it up in garage will certainly help!

I'm gonna also find and pull the fuel filter But in the mean time I'm gonna pimp out my trailer http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/05/ny7y9e8e.jpg Bit of polishing and they should be perfect although I've gotta check the offset to see if they'll work |
If all else fails I might get frustrated and pull out the ether
|
ether is hard on an engine. Be careful.
Maybe try a bit of gas in the intake first. But I would go with your first thought. Check for spark. |
I checked it for spark this morning and it has a strong spark, I'm gonna pull the plugs tonight and see how they look before trying ether
|
Temps are waaay low today, so that's not going to help.

I did mine last year before: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2aead077.jpg Process: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ps98c353e5.jpg After: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7b33a764.jpg |
That actually looks pretty good, love the masking job
Was it a spray on product? |
Ya, comes in a spray can, easy to apply especially with the cards. Ive seen it done without the cards, they just peel it off the tire when done. Best part, if you don't like it, it peels off with a bit of elbow grease. Comes in different colors as well. I used 3 cans to do mine, the better the coverage, the easier it is to remove. Its durable too, car washes dont affect it at all. I think you can get a gloss to finish if you dont like the matte finish. Think we got it from auto value, can't remember the price. I did remove it from my wheels as the black didn't work with my color scheme. Might redo this year in the smoked grey.

How old of a car is it ? I would be hesitant on either as well but... Curious to see if the fuel pump is running when you cycle the key, Turn the key in and listen for a hum from the fuel tank. |
It's a 98 suburban with 198000km on it
Got it running at 3:30am this morning Pulled the plugs, cleaned them all, turned it over a few times with no plugs in Put it all back together and voila, she fired http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/08/bybazupe.jpg (Ya the Burban is beat up) |
good work!
 |
Now to get some fender flares, 2" lift and slap my 33" mtr's on it :)
|
Glad to hear things are working again.
|
So apparently xylene helps quite a bit when it comes to running old fuel through the system
I used to use it to boost the octane rating for my street bike so I added enough to go from 87 to 94 to the tank (I doubt the fuel in the tank could still be considered 87 anymore) Runs perfectly smooth now and starts like it should |
I used to put a bit of xylene into the tank just before aircare. Motor runs a little hotter then. Brings down the numbers, except for NOx

Mohawk premiium had ethyl. Add a little xylene... good to go
You have to watch methyl hydrate. Too much and it ate the rubber in the gas line/ carb gaskets. |
