Finally got wheels :D

So as many of you knew, I am the person who had to heavily rely on the "awesomely awful" calagary transit to grab corals/deals/fishes/etc. So finally, the time came and I am now the proud owner of a 2002 hyundai xg350 :D

Best part: its a 3.5L V6!!!!!!! :twised:

Thanks Eli. And yah, no more bad scheduling

Anyhow, I know lots of you are very familiar with car mechanics and I found something out (even while test driving the car). There's an squeaking sound coming from the rear right side around the wheel. Its sounds like when you leave the trunk open and drive. No shaking while driving or mishandle. The noise gets prominent while on bumpy roads. So today, I gave some strong shaking and found the source of the noise. Its behind the right rear wheel (called axle or something?). Didn't want to spend money on mechanic if its not an issue (heard that its probably due to winter). Anyone got any idea? Here's a pic for reference:

Shock or strut? I had a shock go a few years ago on a newer car, made a clunking noise going over bumps.

Hihi. I have absolute 0 knowledge  But, over the head, I don't think its the suspension but rather something called "spindle" (found the name from a car diagram". That's where the sound is coming I believe.

sell the car quick

seeing as you are not mechanically inclined, and had to look up the name spindle, (nothing wrong with that, just saying) make sure you get a few estimates on any work, and take some one who is familiar with dealing with shops and such so you don't get taken to the cleaners. I would say to look for grease nipples in that area and grease it up and see if the noise goes away, but if you looking at new bushings and such and can't do it your self it could get expensive. and imports are usually more expensive to fix than domestics.

Looks like a job for WD40.

..I'm kidding btw. I don't know anything about cars. I barely even know how to drive one.

Ron99 11-29-2013 04:37 PM

Looks like there is a grease nipple on the end there. if it's just worn rubber bushings it's livable in the short term but could lead to increased wear of surrounding parts over time. Replacement might not be too bad on a Hyundai. Just look for a good independent shop. Don't go to a dealer. They will rape you.

Or do like me. Start a blog and get new cars to review. I have barely driven my own car over the last couple months. You guys don't want to know what I have for the next 4 or 5 days :D

Well I would consider car to be like reef tanks; you learn with time  Back home, we have designated chauffeurs to drive (you can get a very good one for $100/month!) and they would take care of everything and with any sort of problem, we would take it to mechanics since labor back home is dirt cheap. Hence my lack of knowledge but with time, I should be able to learn some basic things. I am quick learner

Thanks. I hope its a easy fix. I will be taking it to a mechanic to see what he got to say. I don't think its a big issue as of right now but I like my things to be without abnormality.

And about the blog, can you please PM me yours? :D And I don't think I can do such thing in any time soon :P

Yah. Understandable

toytech 11-29-2013 11:44 PM

OK the part with the bolt going through it is a rubber bushing ( top of the spindle ) it is either dry and squeaking or separated and clunking don't know what noise your hearing . If is squeaking then don't worry about it if its clunking and that is the spot the clunk is coming from ( not a blown rear shock or something else ) then you will need to get that fixed unfortinitaly . The top of the spindle looks like it sets the rear alignment and if the bushing is loose then the rear alignment will be bad and you will notice crappy tire wear on that corner of the car . I can check tomorrow what aprox labour would be . Im not a Hyundai tech and this is just in my opinion but im am a licensed mechanic .

thats good, being able to pick stuff up, not scared of a little work and getting dirty and a willingness to do stuff yourself can save you a ton of money over the years, automotive isn't rocket science, but there are lots of trick and such to learn, also unless you spend money and buy a good diagnostic program or are good with a breakout box and multi meter figuring some stuff out on newer stuff can be a challenge.

once the warranty is out on my own stuff I do all the work myself, right now I am specializing in ford 7.3 diesels, VW 2.0L diesels, and HD 88CI twin cam motors  but I did spend the money for a good diagnostic program which alone has saved me over 1000 bucks in tests alone, as my truck was ripped off a few years ago and driven into a lake

a good place to start is with a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car, far from everything you need to know but a good start for learning routine maintenance, where stuff is and basic trouble shooting that will narrow stuff down for you. they also have a section on suspension repair so that might tell you exactly how to do it your self and save you a ton right away.

is that conical end a cap over a grease nipple? I can't see one other wise for the life of me, mind you that picture is a weird angle LOL.

Welcome to the money pit that is vehicle ownership.

Is it just me or are those tires nearly bald?

Did you get the car from a dealer? If so they usually have a short warranty period that you can get it taken care of for free. It's probably just a dried out bushing that is now egg shaped on the inside instead of round, very common. It's a pretty simple fix.

I don't think the tires are bald yet; its just the camera's focus and the angel that's making it look bald.

Nop I bought it from the owner. Didn't want to pay double for what's worth the car

Well, the sound is exactly like the one you hear with the trunk open and the vehicle moving (squeaking I would say?). I feel like its not an expensive fix but the labour is a bit worrying for me. Would really appreciate if you could get back to me with the approximate labour :)
