concept aquariums 412g sps dominant store display!!!

ok first of i would like to say welcome and its good to be back on canreef with our family:)

so im sure many of you have been wondering what dem ol boyz from concept have been up to all summer eh?

well weve been busy to say the least and after an absence of a few months i have some goodies to show off:P

so before i get to pics(yes pics are coming lol) heres a little info on our reef display at concept aquariums

412g display
120" x 36" x 22"h
eurobraced
external overflow
drilled for herbie(2 x 1 1/2" drains)
closed loop(haha greg!!)
7 x inlets(1")and 14 x outlets(3/4") in the bottom and back panel
powering the closed loop- 3x 2600gph external pumps
3 x ghl mitras 6200 led lights
2 x mp60's(reefcrest100%)
2 x mp40's(reefcrest 100%)
4 x 300w jager heaters
85g ATO resevoir
tunze ATO feeding sump
apex controller
vertex rx2.0 media reactor for carbon(fed via manifold from return)
vertex rx1.5 media reactor for gfo(fed via manifold from return pump)
external reactor vertex rx2.0 for bio pellets( running empty untill needed)
biopellets are fed via mag7
csc450 skimmer
3 x 7" filter socks
3 chamber dosing chambers( alk/cal/mg)

250lbs of pukani rock and 150lbs of liverock to seed

all in all the idea was to keep it simple, clean and as little maintenance as needed, i wanted to have a 3d rock look where the front view is diff from the top down and the side is diff from the front etc. so lots of canyons, towers and crevices.

the system has no sand as i feel like a system with this much flow doesnt need a sandbed, also with the closed loop coming from the bottom i didnt want to deal with the sand in the water column, this also limits what fish i can have:P

im being very picky about the fish that are going into this tank i have a list of fish that i want to go in and a certain order i need them to go into .

the next fish i add will be an achilles tang and then i have a school of flame cardinals to add in later , currently in qt is a sailfin tang that im going to add but want to wait untill the achilles goes in , the sailfin still has 4 wks left of qt so lots of time to get an achilles, the achilles i have on order is pre quarantined and eating pellets before released for sale(love this supplier!!!)which is important for this fish.

all in all its 3 tangs and i think im done there, after that im focusing on small fish and some wrasses for filler near the end of livestock filling:)

current fish:

male bluethroat trigger(will add a female later still unsure)
2 spot yellow candy hogfish
2 x bangai cardinals
yellow watchmen goby( adult)
scopas tang
coral beauty(the only angel going in and man was i hesitant but we will see)

corals:

nunmerous sps colonies and frags
lps
zoanthids
some softies
rockflower anemones

so thats her i have set the tank up about 1 1/2 months ago, spent the last few weeks waiting for the system to stabilize and then last week i gave the green light for corals.

i have some pics to upload next unfortunately i didnt take many pics of the build process for the tank but a builds a build the real joy is the full setup as a whole:)

cheers and enjoy

Dayum! Epic build thread! It's going to be sad with no sand because you will be miss out on some awesome wrasses! One of my favorite is the radiant wrasse.

while very true iv'e had my share of wrasses and so ill stick with some fairy's or similar species for this reef , almost all of the other tanks ive setup or worked on in the past have been made with wrasses in mind but this time im going for a more small fish kinda thing , with any 400g+ tank though there has to be a few big boys lol

pics are uploading as we speak and will be posted as soon as they are done:)

once you see the tank youll know why i went with no sand it was just a better fit aesthetically and allowed for more flow from the closed loop and 60's:)

thmh 11-10-2013 09:31 PM

Psh! Who needs a sand bed when you can have a ZnP bed!..... Can I get an amen!!! :D i know you have your reason for having no sand and I just wanna sit back and see this tank unfold! P. S my clown fish sleeps in my zoa garden. :-) maybe we can train the wrasse to do the same!

It's plumbed and running prayers at the moment , tank is to young ATM for biopellets and the tanks bioload is still small enough to manage but I forsee a need so thinking ahead .

I may go vinegar but pellets is a bit more set and forget for now:)

Can't wait to crank them up lol peaking at about 50% for now I find myself playing with colors alot though and I've almost got it nailed down. I have them on tracks so they can slide left and right for better spread directly over corals . It's three main structures but we may need a 4th to light the full tank evenly but tried three to start as they arnt cheap lol going for lower light corals on the far right not sure what kind yet :)

Love the blending over the pros which I've used for quite a while:)

lastlight 11-11-2013 01:58 AM

Wow no wasting time starting from frags I see lol. Hope to come check it out soon nicely done so far.

Looks like its time for a Calgary trip.
Tank looks awesome. Love the dimensions.

Delphinus 11-11-2013 04:54 AM

It's looking a bit more colourful than when I saw it on opening day!

Should be a fun tank..

I'm not sure I envy the task of water changes, but I imagine it can't hurt to be a store and kind of be sitting on a steady supply of salt. What are the plans for water changes for this bad boy?

right now its 10% weekly as im trying to avoid any sudden spikes or drops in parameters , im currently running gfo and have the pellets ready to go if i need them , for now its good husbandry and low bioload untill i start carbon dosing and dosing elements.

ro/di for this baby lol :P

I can't wait to check it out next time I get to come to Calgary. Last time I was there you were still in build mode.

I found it really interesting to see the difference between looking at the tank normally vs the top down. From the front the bottom looks black, but from the top you can really see the plywood. Do you regret not painting/vinal wrapping the bottom, or will no one get a high enough viewing angle for it to matter?

Skimmerking 11-13-2013 01:11 AM

looks great Denny

Madreefer 11-13-2013 01:12 AM

Looks nice. Nicer with sand:lol:

darkreef 11-18-2013 06:27 PM

Looks like I got to take a viste! Looks epic . And I need to pick up my sump and adventually start my build ! My smaller tank is doing well now ! I'm really hoping bigger is easyier for water stability . Cheers

Skimmerking 11-18-2013 07:04 PM

how high are the lights Denny man? Are you still getting alot of punch that high up?

they are about 16" AWL , i have them at about 60% peaking right now and going up slowly. may eventually add a 4th but we will see as the tank progresses:)

its actually a illusion, when a tank is filled with water anytime you look through one panel of glass to the bottom panel its going to appear " mirrored " regardless of whats under it , its only via a top down that you can ever see the plywood:)

its something that weve known for a long time and no regrets , i had the option to black out the bottom and didnt find the need as its only me and my cam that is ever up there;)

thanks for the compliments:)
