who quarantines fish

Just wondering who here quarantines their new additions, and who doesn't. I have never done it but now that i would like to add some more expensive fish i been thinking of it.

what process do you guys use and how long should a fish be quarantine for

Aquattro 09-23-2013 05:18 PM

I don't buy new fish anymore, but did quarantine all new fish when I did, having lost a tankful of big fish to velvet by not doing QT. I used a 40g tank, hang on filter and treated with chloroquine for 2 weeks.

Amadod2 09-23-2013 05:25 PM

if im going to be getting small fish between 1.5"-4" wound a 10g be enough??

It would be OK, for those 1.5" fish, but for a 4" fish, anything you can do to make it a little bigger would be better. 15-20g if you can.

Yup everything that goes in my tank get quarantined. I quarantine for 14 days, 7 with chloroquine phosphate, and then 7 days of observation. It's all done in a 15g tank with a hob filter, heater and bubbler.

Myka 09-23-2013 09:21 PM

I do.

Aquattro do you have a thread detailing your treatment procedure for chlorquine phosphate? I was considering using this treatment for a flame angel I have in qt. thanks :)

Reef Pilot 09-23-2013 11:05 PM

I QT all new fish using the hypo method.

Not only for disease prevention but gives them a strong head start before going into the display tank.

Alberta-newb 09-23-2013 11:15 PM

Yes, minimum six weeks including prazi-pro and either CP or cupramine depending on species.

I may have typed something out long ago, but I use 20mg/l in tank, no carbon, no rock. After 7 days I change 50% water with new water containing 10mg/l. Lights off, it's photosensitive.

+1

Also turn off UV if you use it. General consensus is 40mg/gal for prophylactic QT or 80mg/gal for treatment of active ich/brook/velvet. 20mg/l is about 75mg/gal for those that like mixing units ;)

Where did those numbers come from?

Aquattro 09-24-2013 01:28 AM

Here is a good article on CP usage.

misty s 09-24-2013 01:31 AM

what form does the cp u used come in? i have found some that i can get with a prescription from a pharmacy but it comes in pill form, i can get it crushed to a powder, my sister is a pharmacy tech and can measure it out to whatever quantities i ask for but then do i mix it in saltwater to create a liquid and then add it to the qt?

Aquattro 09-24-2013 01:33 AM

I bought a kilo of CP(hosphate) out of the US. The tabs are stupid expensive.

misty s 09-24-2013 03:03 AM

thanks :)

Quarantine here.

It is huge pain but I've aquired unintended hitchikers each time I've skipped it. Flatworms, aiptasia, cynao (though I doubt you can avoid cyano).

4 -6 weeks. Only prophylactic is praziquantel, a de-wormer. I have done formalin dips for clownfish but on the fence about it.

jorjef 09-24-2013 04:12 AM

I do... In the bag on the trip home.

mattr 09-24-2013 04:31 AM

where can you purchase chloroquine. I just recently lost my fish to velvet and im putting everything into a qt. so far I have been using prazipro and ich-x

This is from RC, look for a thread "My journey using chloroquine phosphate" About 30 pages long but some good info (as well as some misinformation). Also some info on sources of CP. CP usage isn't written in stone yet so results may vary. I know a few people have managed to get a prescription for CP through their veterinarian.

I have the original article by the originator of this method, Lee, I think his name is, and he suggested 40mg/l was a max dosage. The link I posted above matches my dosage and with it, I've been successful, so I'd try that before going much higher. I'll see if I can find the article, I have it on my office PC.

Not sure where to get it in hobbyist quantities, I used to sell it, but I'm out and probably not getting more. Minimum purchase is a kg.

Thank you for the link, an excellent article. I would love to read the original if you find it. I'll have to double check the math, I know the dosages I quoted fromthe RC thread are mg/US gal. (One thing that drives me nuts in this hobby, every product seems to use different units)

daniella3d 09-25-2013 01:20 AM

How much was it for 1 kg? I may organize a group buy around here for people who wish to quarantine their fish.
