Red envelopes are the respectful way to give money to another individual. Often seen at festive occasions such as weddings, new years and even birthdays. Elders are suppose to give red envelopes to the younger generations who will continue to receive them until they are married. Then they are not considered "eligible". IE - I have a son who is the only child in his generation so my parents, brother, and sister should be giving him a nice red envelope. Since I'm married and so is my brother, neither of us will get one. My sister (youngest in the family) is not yet married so she gets one from my parents, myself and brother.
there are always exceptions but those are the general guidelines

snaggle 02-09-2005 01:44 AM

sound kool I am going to have work on my parents to do some catch up  . Thanks for the info.

It also helps if you're Chinese

We say Gong Hai Fat Choi, Um Pow Twa Twa Lai (phonetically correct but not sure about spelling)

The first part translates to Happy New Year, & get this, the second part says - Red Packet Big Big Give

We Chinese or even bananas (yellow on the outside, white on the inside) are not shy about demanding $$$ from family & friends.

However, many of my CBC (Chinese-born Canadians) cousins try to get away with just saying Happy New Year, but that don't cut it.

If I'm giving them my hard earned $$ then they're going to have to say the magic words, just like I did when I was single.

Anthony

Gung Hai Fat Choi everybody.

Gong Hai fat choy! To everyone and all your aquariums, best of health and luck! I'm married, so I won't receive any Lai See (red envelope lucky money). I'm celebrating Chinese New Year tonight at a local Thai restaurant. After that I'll be in the fish room. That's how we celebrate New Year up north here on the island. Regards Ken
