whats the nicest coral youve ever lost

Everyone's done it, bought a coral you thought you'd never see paid a fortune or had to give your soul for and finally you find it, take it home, pat yourself on the back just to have it die and perish some how.....

Tell your story we would love to hear it(I need to know I'm not the only one who does this lol)

thmh 08-18-2013 03:39 PM

Strawberry shortcake ...I found the nicest piece I've ever seen took pictures of it like it was a newborn ....a hot summerday ended that joyous feeling came home to a completely white ssc and a tank high in temps .....ill admit I cried a little lol

thmh 08-18-2013 03:48 PM

Denny wanna see my sexy ssc frag? Might make you wet! :-)

Phil 08-18-2013 03:52 PM

A supper nice bleeding apple scolly. Did well for me for three months then melted away. Probably one of the nicest pieces I had. I was lucky I didn't pay a hole lot for it.

Sold my hoeksemai when I shut down my 404. Nicest piece of SPS I've owned. I was extremely lucky to get a piece back when I had my little 28g but I could not keep the frag alive. The original colony has since been lost too. It seemed to be a stable hoek which from what I hear is rare... amazingly blue too.

Post ITTTT!! LOL

Actually just scored another first one since that one I lost, I've almost got full color out of it and this time around temp isn't an issue although I feel like buying a video camera to monitor it 24/7 and have a go team on standby in case it gets roudy lol

U don't want to see it. U WILL have to have it

ScubaSteve 08-18-2013 04:07 PM

A, I've got a couple.

1) Purple Poison Shortcake - Lost this just the other day. I have a LED 14g biocube that I've been growing SPS in like weeds, so I figured I'd take the PPSC out of my main tank and stick it in the biocube to see what would happen. Ya, well we had a temp swing, tank hit 84 and the PPSC went kaput.

2) a crazy nice chalice. Don't have a name for it but it wasn't cheap. The frag was on my sandbed while I was rearranging the tank over a few days. My pistol shrimp decided he wanted to get in on the action and rearranged the chalice upside down under a pile of sand... While I was out of town for 2 days. You know the rest...

3) The craziest nice A. plana I have every seen. It had yellows, irridescent greens, electric blues, toxic purples and swirls of electric pink thrown in for good measure. I grew this bad boy into a wicked sized, juicy tabling colony. Came home one day to find it RTNing. Never figured out why...

reefwars 08-18-2013 04:08 PM

Phil my bleeding apple is like yours did well for a few months but went downhill fast its just barely kicking now I've done all that can be done for it somedays I think its gonna come back somedays I want to pull it..... I think my leds did a serious number on it and its a tough recovery for a coral that's known to not heal quickly

reefermadness 08-18-2013 04:21 PM

I've lost a rainbow chalice. Also out about $300 (which was only 2 frags) worth of avengers acro. That's just the start of the list.

jorjef 08-18-2013 04:22 PM

Gold wall hammer, yellow Octospawn. B.J.D. ....... Excuse me while I go have a little cry.

marie 08-18-2013 04:35 PM

If I can only choose one favorite then it would be my pearlberry acro

tang daddy 08-18-2013 04:39 PM

For me it was a couple Aussie wild colonies, one was a deep water species the other looked like a tenius...

Nice ssc Tony!

Magma 08-18-2013 04:45 PM

Nicest Coral for me was my frog spawn. It was only 2 heads and it was looking great...then one day it all sucked it and "died". I was going to remove the rock it was on but left it in, after 2 months a few small heads came back...6 months later it had 15 heads and was double the size when opened up.

Then I transferred tanks 4 months ago and it "Died" again. But today I have 6 heads on the original body. Along with 3 different branch's which broke off have 2-3 heads each as well....So while I havent really "lost" this coral it sure has given me some stress over the last 3 years. Easily my favorite coral.

Other than that I have only really lost cheap corals like a few small zoa frags, Cabbage Leather Coral (really cool :() and Xenia...it wont grow no how for me

Dearth 08-18-2013 04:58 PM

My red and green brain coral it was a beautiful sized coral and it just decided to wither away still miss it

reefwars 08-18-2013 05:08 PM

Grew a colonies of Darth mauls to 200 polyps and decided to Frags ...my piece I kept melted I've since got them about 5-6 more times just to hhave them melt overnight ...this coral is now cursed for me lol

canadianbudz604 08-18-2013 05:17 PM

Coral

Me it was a 5" crazy red and bright green tip forest fire red digi colony. I didn't test a batch of new water I made (from the tap), needless to say it sent my tank into a crash. Never used tap water since for anything that has to do with my reef.

Aquattro 08-18-2013 05:22 PM

Moved my 75 into a 150. Lost most of it. I can't even remember all the one-off losses of nice pieces, there's been so many over the years.

kien 08-18-2013 06:04 PM

My list starts here.

http://farm5.staticflickr.com/4069/4...3c50ed7f_z.jpg

This was my first heart breaking loss. Got it as a two polyp frag from he-who-likes-to-frag-a-lot. Grew it out to a nice massive colony. Quite a conversion piece. Then it slowly melted away

Not even going to bother to list all the other because I eventually got numb to all the losses after this first one.

One of my favorite pieces in my tank

I lost the tequila sunrise blastos I got from Denny. It was growing great lots of new babies. I decided to frag it cut a couple heads off and within a week it was gone :(

When I changed from my 180 to my 26 cube I lost all my deep water acros.
I was most upset over this one

gregzz4 08-18-2013 09:23 PM

This is the other meaning of lost ...

I picked a very small frag of Setosa from Rich and had it for less than a week
It was glued to the LR and twice I found it laying on the sand
The third time it was knocked off I looked for it for over an hour. It simply vanished :surprise:

I had lost virtually every piece of sps back in Feb due to AEFW. Some nice pieces and don't see anywhere nowadays while others were acquired as expensive frags ...
Ones I have missed most...

Walt Smith Pectinia. It was a big one.

Myka 08-19-2013 12:37 AM

Three mouth Bleeding Apple Scoly. A $20 Milli frag fell on it and stung it real bad. I tried my best to save it. I couldn't get any of the mouths to feed because they were too damaged.

Wow, I would be more than crying, if I lost those... That AEFW scares the crap out of me...

Haven't lost any really expensive ones,... yet.

But was a little peeved when overnight I lost an ice blue favia when my sun coral got too close, It was 2 inches away, but not enough. In the morning, one of the sun coral polyps was still stretched way over, like it was trying to devour it.

And I lost a nice orange chalice just a couple days after I bought it. I had it too high, and looked a little bleached after the first day. After the second day, started seeing some skeleton sticking through, and by the third, just skeleton left, even though I moved it down the day before.

I thought a valida acro frag died that I got from Rich. Looked dead for a couple months (but I didn't throw it out). And then saw a polyp appear, and then another, and another, and now it's doing nicely, and coloring up, too.

But no 2 or 300 dollar corals for me,... yet. Sure would hate to lose one of those.

Cal_stir 08-19-2013 01:39 AM

Brain, lost him to a gall crab.

That was one nice scoly. I had an itch for one of these a while back. If that had happened to me I would never have another milli in my tank.

It's amazing how they can recover too! I would prize that one as a forever keeper!

Myka 08-19-2013 02:14 AM

This one hurt too. I lost it to what I believe was Black Band Disease. All the fragging and dipping in the world didn't save it. I even moved it to another tank. It took about a year to recede back to nothing.

Yes, I guess it was mad at me for how I handled it and where I mounted it. I think I hit it with too much light initially, while it was still wounded. I partially shaded it for a while and left it to see if it would die completely. But as I said, it came back to life, and is now starting to look good.

Proteus 08-19-2013 02:45 AM

I came extremely close to loosing my feugo. Direct flow almost pealed it clean. But now recovering. So happy as I don't know if there's any around

ponokareefer 08-19-2013 04:02 AM

My favorite coral that I've ever owned was an elegance coral. I did a tonne of research, bought a really nice one only to see it last less than a month.

My most upsetting lose was my gigantea carpet anemone though. I've never researched and pondered a purchase near as much as that, or spent close to that amount on anything. I completely rearranged my tank for it.

wreck 08-19-2013 04:03 AM

Myka how big was that coral? That sucker looked awesome

I've always wanted one, but hesitated due to price.
