Having 2 heaters saved me today :/

So glad i took the advice of many reefers to buy two smaller heaters instead of one large heater today. I got a email while in architecture class from my apex saying its temp was low by the time i got home it was at 74.5f. My second heater had kept it somewhat warm where as if i only had one my cold basement probably would have dropped it to around 65-70 degrees. I hope this helps some other people out. Its always good to be proactive instead of reactive :)

Also bad ass that it emailed you soon time to throw out my trusty reef keeper

FishingGoalie 02-23-2015 08:45 PM

lol ya no complaints with the apex

Seriak 02-23-2015 09:55 PM

I run three heaters each capable of heating my tank so even if one dies, I will not see a significant drop.

straightrazorguy 02-23-2015 10:21 PM

I run 2 heaters; each one is capable of heating the whole tank. They are set for 78 and 77F. Temp is just too important a param...

run 2 heaters as well and each individually would maintain the temperature

Hmm mybe I should rly consider using more than 1 heater as well. I'm just scared they don't turn off n cook everything fast

Another reason to hook them up to an Apex.

daplatapus 02-24-2015 01:08 AM

Yup, good call. I run 4, lol, all on my apex.

jason604 02-24-2015 01:21 AM

what else is apex good for i dunno if its worth for me to invest in 1 yet. my old system seems to be good for 2yrs without apex anyways.. mybe i will buy 1 for my new system if its worth it

My apex runs my vortech, radions, misc float switches, temperature readings, ph readings, heaters, and emails me whenever something is wrong. And I can control things from anywhere in the world on my phone. Just have to hook up my wireless camera to it again as well.

+1. In this day and age I would consider NOT using an Apex to be reckless! (I'm ready for the backlash!) Lol.

daplatapus 02-24-2015 02:21 AM

Ya, my tank has been saved once or twice by the email alerts. If nothing else, that's been worth it for me.

Thats why i run 2 slightly less powerful because if one decides it wants to cook the tank it isn't strong enough by itself to cook it :)

again the controller

Craigdillman 02-24-2015 02:38 PM

The only reason initally I got a controller was to control heaters couldn't imagine having them just sitting there 30$ heater can cook a $ 10,000 tank and for 100$ contrôlér or 250$ for the apexs it's a no brainer

Roskoreef 02-24-2015 04:56 PM

2 weeks after my tank was running 2 of my 3 heaters broke at the same time, almost lost all my fish. I was lucky to have a small 150w carry me through the day.

I think the Apex is a lot more than that, once you add it all up. Still, it's well worth the money, considering the many thousands invested, the time and sweat. I only have a ReefKeeper, but I wouldn't even consider running a tank without a controller.

mark 02-24-2015 05:35 PM

full controller is nice but if just wanting to control temp, there's always the RANCO ETC series or the STC-1000

04V10 02-24-2015 07:25 PM

Very cool! Good catch on the controller part. I haven't run a big system yet, but I had a controller on my 20gal, just so the heater didn't fail on (old controller without emailing capability).

If i do a big one in the future, I'll be getting a nice controller with all of these capabilities.

Simons 02-24-2015 07:32 PM

I will echo comments on both 1. the super greatness of having a smart controller and 2. having dual heaters.

Bravo Zulu on both counts. I like many others have had my basement tank saved by my controller.

Now that I am flanging up a new freshwater tank to replace my decade old 'dumb' tank, I also will be deploying an APEX on it as well.
