Success with a Pearlberry?

Has anyone had success with this coral? I tried it once before, but it didn't get much past the frag stage. A little bit of encrusting but that was it, and the never did get the Pearlberry colors. Eventually it just expired  Perhaps the frag was too small at 3/4"?

I talked to another reef keeper recently who is having a similar experience, his frag came from the same source. Curious, I didn't think they were considered hard to keep.

I love the look of this coral, and I'd like to try again... but I'd like to know that it will stay alive.

One of the nicest acropora out there.....mine took a while to get going with nice colour but now it's spectacular.

christyf5 01-20-2012 08:29 PM

Marie has had great success to my knowledge. I've gotten a frag from her about 3 times now and have been unsuccessful every single time. I'm kind of embarassed to ask her for another one

Reefer Rob 01-20-2012 08:44 PM

??? what happened to the 3? BTW I think you just asked

lastlight 01-20-2012 08:49 PM

Mine's been dormant for months but since the transfer it's started budding and developing colour. I moved it higher into the light.

LOL, well here's hoping

I have no idea, started them low to acclimate for lighting then moved them to where I wanted them. They just did nothing in the tank, kind of dormant like Brett said, and then just slowly died off. I had nothing nearby and no other problems with any other SPS in the tank. I even left the last one on its own frag rack and it still died.

Exact same thing in my tank! Everything else was doing great, but this little coral just sat there looking like

yeah its the weirdest thing. Although I've had a couple other frags do that to me. Currently a frag I got from Chaloupa (original from snappy) is just starting to show color and a small branch after almost a year in my tank. Its high up and has always looked ok (ie polyps extended) but a blah color. The branch is just a gorgeous blue with green. Not sure what prompted the sudden growth. Same goes for a humilis frag I've had for well over a year (although those are reportedly slow growers).

I had success and now I don't

It decided to up and die on me one day......I guess there is no point asking you for a frag

$100...never seen one sell for that much. But then again ....never actually seen one in a store here in ontario.

rastaangel 01-20-2012 10:19 PM

I had tremendous succes with my last ORA pearlberry before my tank crash. It took a long time before it did anything, just kinda slowly encrusting then decided to explode

Very Nice Doug! - yours looks big - if you don't mind me saying..

dc4 01-21-2012 01:39 AM

My ORA Pearlberry is different in color, it has a light blue base with reddish tips and green polyps. Has only been in the tank for about a month though.

That is one nice acro but definitely not the same species as ORA pearlberry. Yours has large almost stag like branches.....the pearlberry has smaller, more delicate branches and a tabling growth form.

dc4 01-21-2012 02:28 AM

Here is a pick of mine (one in the middle) looks kinda light green in the pic but its light blue i'm the tank:

funny.....I was gonna say the same about your piece.....checked the ORA website and the two pics that come up are.....well.....inconclusive......the first pic looks like yours and the second pic looks more like mine...... http://www.oracorals.com/ora-pearlberry-acropora/

Reefer Rob 01-21-2012 03:11 AM

From ORA's website
http://www.orafarm.com/products/hard...earlberry.html

fishytime 01-21-2012 03:17 AM

the link I provided was from ORA too:wink:...... and the second pic there looks nothing like the first (which looks like the one in the link you posted) :noidea:

Aquattro 01-21-2012 03:36 AM

I think I have a book somewhere identifying these. Each of you send me a frag and I'll figure what's what. Ok? Good. Thanks. PM for address.

Actually the guy who created oracorals.com is not affiliated with ORA at all.

Mine came on a black plug with the acronym ORA on it. Your not going to get me to second guess what mine is.

I never meant to offend.

Is yours from Sean, Doug? That's where I got mine. His colony is gorgeous! Mine has a long way to go obviously in size but colour too.

xtreme 01-21-2012 05:37 AM

I've always called mine "pearlberry-ish", I know its not quite the same as the ORA version but it is still pretty nice. My colony originated from a frag I got from Anthony (fooser) a few years ago.

xtreme 01-21-2012 05:40 AM

Here is an old top down shot of it. It is much larger than this now.

Reefer Rob 01-21-2012 05:52 AM

Gorgeous coral! Same colors as a Pearlberry, but different structure.

Ryan 01-21-2012 03:06 PM

Bought one from xtreme and its a very nice piece. When I compared it to a friends ORA Pearlberry they are 2 different corals. They have differet growth patterns, thicker/thinner branches, different structure, and doesnt have the oval tip like the ORA Pearlberry does.

Its a nice coral but I dont think its an ORA Pearlberry.

Very nice Sean, that grew gorgeously for you. I had only ever fragged that colony twice and I am glad you got one of them. Pearlberry-ish is right, I have since started to wonder as well when I came across another pearlberry that had the exact same coloration but different growth (which I picked up of course). The second one I have now has more rounded tips, and much slower growing (and far more finicky). My first one was bigger than a basketball before I hacked it apart.....now its almost a volleyball again, bullet proof coral.

I would like to check out your tank in person one day Sean, you look like you have had some explosive growth and colors.

fooser 01-21-2012 10:46 PM

I can't seem to find old pics of the first coral by itself when I took them top down. It is the coral dead center in this picture that was taken a few years ago. I will see if i can get a good pic of the second frag as well.
