broken glass on my Mh fixture
ok so ia m not sure if this is the right place to post this but a little while ago i let my roommate borrow my K2 viper 150w hqi and it got water splashed up on the glass shield and blew the glass out. do i have to have the glass in there or will it mess stuff up?
Without the glass you will cook your corals with UV.
ok that is kinda what i was thinking would happen. but on a side note the store here in red deer has the same fixture as me and he has coral growing like crazy and his glass blew out on him 4 months ago.
any thoughts on that would be great |
Mogul base lamps are ok without glass. DE lamps NEED the glass. I've seen the damage that can be done first hand.
yeah i heard that about mogule base. these are both DE bulbs.
Be on the safe side of caution, you should get new glass my friend.
oh i will be definately, i just got to go find my glass cutter down in the basement, and cut a piece out of some scrap i have layin around.
i was more curious about the whole glass thing anyways. |
Actually, that is partially true. If you go read that Osram document I posted on MH. You will find that the outer sleeve of DE's is a UV barrier. The glass that cracked is just protection for the bulb itself. It does filter out UV as well. If you blow out the bulb itself you can hurt yourself. As DE's work under hi pressure(70 psi) an explosion is possible an you get molten glass/metal flying at you. The glass has to be tempered
thats right it does have to be tempered can u cut tempered glass? or does it have to be cut then tempered
no...cut and then tempered
