sigh.... more stn issues, fairly certain it was a combo of slight overdose of zeostart, slight change in zeo reactor output (when i changed pump and reactor 2mths ago) and an alk swing from 7 dkh to 8.75 dkh overnight (apex malfunction)

only my largest colonies are dying, i was hoping it would stop but this morning nearly a 1/4 of my large bonsai, yellow mille, efflo and teal deepwater... i dont think i have a choice but to frag out...

I fragged out the teal deepwater and cut most of the dying tissue, but i found this black inside the skeleton, anyone know if this is whats killing my nicest stuff? besides stn from recent issues..

pics after cutting most of the bottom off,

http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...psvuja5bwc.jpg

black stuff, was inside the part that was dying,

frag tank was a mess so i picked up some of these new nifty frag racks from IM. I saw them on a MACNA review, so i snatched 2 when i saw them.

riceboy 11-19-2015 01:49 PM

When dealing with stn in the past I only had success by cutting away at the healthy portion and gluing te fresh cut portion to a rock or frag plug an leave it in a low flow area in ur tank. Oh ya and prayed that it didn't die the next day lol

I haven't found that fragging always helps. In fact, I'm not sure that it even helps at all. I've tried fragging and not fragging, and sometimes the frags will survive when the rest of the colony perishes, and sometimes just the opposite. If you do frag, try to clip in-tank, and leave the rest of the colony in there.

ya I definetly prefer to frag in tank, Im going to dip a few different colonies and see what comes off. AEFW are still a suspect, but im still leaning towards alk spike as i havent stopped using flatworm stop in 6-8 mths. I fragged a huge mille just in time to save a few good size mini colonies, so far so good...

Looking good, what changes did you do which resulted in a tank bounceback?

In regards to creepy teeth... when I moved my fish from holding tub to the tank, i had the female clown jump out of the net and landed on her face.... she had split the entire face down the middle showing some really creepy teeth... I though she would die for sure, however a year later and she lays eggs every two weeks and scar is 98% healed, can only see a little bit of the scar...

I beleive the majority of my issues was high alk, 156 ppm (8.7 dkh) so i slowed the calcium reactor down for a few days and let it drop to 125 ppm (7 dkh). With my leds at 40%, some acros did not like the high light/high alk combo...

I also gave the majority of my coral a dip in coral rx (kills those blue buggish bugs, but not the red eggs, not sure if they hatch after??)

Followed by a 1.5x dose of Flatworm Exit with a 20 gallon water change and a carbon change.

I realized that sometimes, especially with lps it is best to know when to fold em. A large gonipora I was really cheering for, was continually loosing little bits of flesh which i watched land on sps colonies and find burns and damage later... lesson learned

worst case i make my smaller tank an lps tank, love that fish!

Madreefer 12-07-2015 07:05 PM

Is it 3 gyres your running or is there anymore that we can't see in your pics? Have you tried placing them at different spots and are you running them at full throttle? I'm running 2 of the 150's and thinking on adding 2 more but those would be the 130's.
Good luck with the angel.

There is 2 150's on this side - 70% alternating flow, bottom every 2 mins, top every 5 mins

http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...psvlhepw0i.jpg

and a 150 on the bottom and 130 at the top, im trying them on angles to try and make the flow as random as possible - 130 100% alternating 2 mins, 150 100% slowest wave/pulse

Oooh, the regal! I love that fish too. Definitely a bit dicey in a reef though (like most medium-large angels actually). I've always found them difficult to keep. Many of them don't end up eating, or end up eating things you don't want them to eat . Not impossible but definitely challenging. Anyway, she looks like she'll be a gorgeous addition if she can kick that ich.

Like all fish in my tank, only the strong survive...

Roskoreef 12-15-2015 11:08 PM

writing this update is giving me chest pains...

last night did a dose of sentinel for red bugs... most pods in main tank dead, lots of small ones alive in frag tank, one acro crab dead, thats it...cant see any red bugs anymore, clam is fine... sentinel worked well, maybe too well...

So now i could care less about these red bugs that i just paid a shutload for some sentinel pills and they are the least of my acro troubles, it seems the sucking ftupid black/purple bugs are invincible and have also devestated others acro colonies, from r2r it starts halfway down:

http://www.reef2reef.com/threads/an-....184192/page-7

these black bugs are eating all my acros, after the sentinel treatment, they flourished! most likely because of no competition on a food source, but with the exception of some new colonies, all my acros today are toast. all frags had bugs - garbage. in one night they exploded... all other corals and fish are great.

2 GALLONS of frags all infested this morning with rtn and a few colonies..

http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/...pshtzfmtjq.jpg

I have a bunch to frag and maybe recover if i got enough of them out but im pretty sure im dreaming..

What am i supposed to do with a decent size calcium reactor and zeovit and not many corals that like ulns, use it with super slowflow and changes stones half as much, or use half as much stones..

ugh..might just accept that im going to have a LPS dominant reef here soon..

anyways slowed down reactor and flow, might have some gyres for sale soon....

Ginu 12-16-2015 08:13 PM

Sorry to hear that. I guess I was the one who pushed you to dip the coral see what bugs you had.

I don't know much about these black bugs, however they seem to be scary. Have you thought moving all the SPS to the FT and doing weekley dips? IT might be more efficient than dosing the DT.

Yup, i'm glad you did...otherwise i would have still been wondering... allthough those bugs came off in the dip, they definetly werent dead, and most seemed to burrow inside the skeleton. At the end of that r2r thread the guy finally killed them ( and 95% of the frags aswell) with a 400% bayer dip for 5 mins several times...

My FT is running off my DT atm so thats not gonna help i dont think, plus frag tank had the major infestation, dt is suffering slowly, but without the red bugs some acros may have a chance...
