Pics are AMAZING!

Most tank builders will be reluctant to build a rimless tank over 5 feet in length, however from my experience and knowledge 72" long and 30" tall would be the max for 19mm. So in theory you could go 72"x72"x30" and end up with about 650 gallons of rimless tank.

I have to agree with you there, but at this point it is simply new light shining down onto corals that are acclimated to other lighting (I think...I haven't been following along well). I would like to see comparative photos after 6 weeks under the new lighting, albeit all sorts of things could change the color in that time. What I find odd is that I have seen LEDs that made the corals fluoresce in a way that I found to be very hard on the eyes, like I have to squint to look at the corals because it hurt my eyes. I didn't find that attractive at all.

All the effort you put into this build (and documenting it) is much appreciated though, and must be very disappointing for you to not be able to achieve what you wanted.

Why are you against using optics?

I'd love to see some more new photos of the tank

Very nice job with the Diy led and resetting up the new tank, its coming along nicely.

After looking back at the photos of your Fu, I still really want one. I managed to get a dwarf hi fin that looks similiar to the other one you owned, it was eating mysis so I decided it was a safe bet and now is eating krill like a champ. I hope to find a FU that excepts mysis and even frozen food, I guess in the meantime I'll keep looking.

Thanks for all the comments!

The LEDs are actually growing on me more each day. It took a while but I've pretty much worked out all my issues with them. Intensity was my first issue which bleached out a few corals and wiped out most of my original SPS corals. The level now seems to be about right at a fraction of where I started. Washed out color was my other concern which I found to be related to the white LEDs which seem to just kill color if run too high. Fixed this by adding green LEDs to my mix which allows me to create white RGB style and cut back on the cool whites, color is way better. I also added some UV LEDs which I'm not yet convinced did much but I use them as moonlights which is pretty cool. The last major issue I had was controlling the PWM drivers which (thanks to Gareth at Progressive Reef) I finally got working with the profilux PWM module. My only other problem is fan noise which I'm somewhat stuck with, I do regret my heat sink design as requires a pressurizing fan which I originally thought would be fine as they are suppose to be ultra quite. However after a short amount of time the two fans are pretty noisy but on the bright side the heat sink runs at a cool 85-90 degrees and the fans turn off when the temperature drops below that.

Anyways since my title is locked in with the expectation of new pics and I don't really feel like bitching about the editing BS I'm going to attempt to always add new pictures whenever I post something. Should be interesting...

Steve you have a way with a camera and a tank just like Fishytime

mseepman 02-23-2012 11:52 PM

Wow, some really nice pics! I just don't get how you guys do it. Once my new tank is up, I better figure it out quickly because seeing those just makes me so jealous.

Awesome pics!

Thanks again!

Here's a night shot with the UV leds. Not the greatest pic but gives an idea.

Glad the LEDs worked out after all the work you put into them. Pics are sweet I like the pattern around the bleny's eyes.

Do you still have the facebook video of your misfit tank with the lion and the engg goby? I had that bookmarked at one point but lost it.

Thanks however it's not a blenny but don't worry I won't tell him you said that. Yeap, it seems to still work  Click here for video

I'm already cheating as these pics aren't technically new as I've posted them elsewhere but adding them here seems fitting.

Your profiliux... isn't the screen pointing down? Or is that not a standalone model?

Not standalone, I control from upstairs though profilux head unit or connected PC.

Picked this up yesterday, was eyeing it ever since it came in and finally broke down.

With the basement development coming along I spent sometime finishing off the fish room. Used FRP paneling on pretty much everything I could which seems to be ideal so far. Big tanks to Greg (Grizz Welding) for his work which was absolutely flawless.

Thanks. Yes clean was kind of the theme and that tank was pretty ugly.

I also managed to set it up so I can actually shut down any one of the tanks for isolation or cleaning without effecting the rest of the system. For example if I want to quarantine the frag tank I just shut and open a couple valves and it becomes a separate isolated system. I also have a drain line so I can completely drain tanks if I need to.

Next addition will be a saturated salt tank for salinity control and auto water changing.
