Hows the Zeo working for you so far Lando?
|
So far so good, algae has stopped growing more or less. Particularly the valonia now all it has to do is start disappearing, which should happen eventually.
In other tank news a potters angel was added recently and is doing great so far. I also started dosing K-Balance and Coral Snow along with the other zeo products I was previously using so we'll have to see how that turns out. My K level was down around 300 so it has to be dealt with. |
Nice. I was thinking the potter's wasn't there last time I was over.
Did you manage to fit everyone from the reef crawl in your basement? |
Yeah, everyone fit. My tank looked pretty small with everyone around it though.
|
Here is the Potters again. (I am really starting to like this little guy)

Potter's are definitely one of my favourite pygmy angels. Very nice!

Update:
So the potters died on me. This was my second try with one and my last. Long story short I suspect the source for the first one was the reason for its death. (LFS that it came from has a terrible holding system IMO.) This time around the fish was fine up until one day it stopped swimming around and the next it died.
As a whole the tank is doing great. I had a little problem with my Ca reactor and my params dropped pretty low Alk was down to 5dKH and calcium was at 350ppm. This led me to find out that Salifert test kits may be giving false readings. In which I ordered new elos test kits to cross check with my salifert ones. Turned out the Alk and Mg kit are fine, but the Ca was out by 50ppm. I have been raising the levels back to normal the past week and everything should be back to normal next week. As for using the Zeovit system, so far I am loving it. The tank is always crystal clear, polyp extension is A1. The fish are also happier because they have been eating very well since I have basically been feeding them double of what they are used to before starting zeo. |
|
Ya that is an amazing photo. I've never seen my Butterfly move that fast. Must be because of the Black spot. It's the turbo charger :)
J |
Yeah, he loves ripping around the tank. We haven't been able to think of a good name for him. Any suggestions?
|
Sorry to hear about the angel. :(
How long have you been on zeovit now? You know what's weird, I'm now on zeovit for a little over a month, about 7 weeks in now. So basically still a total newb startup, right? But I was sort of expecting to have seen a reduction in nuisance algaes by now? It hasn't happened. By nuisance algaes I mean specifically the green film I get on my glass and red cyano. In fact, I didn't have cyano before starting zeo, and now I have it fairly bad. :( I don't get it. Anyhow sorry for the hijack I'm not meaning to ask about why this is happening but I'm just curious if in particular you've noticed a difference in how often you have to clean your glass? If so, how long did it take, in your estimation, before you noticed a difference in the film/slime buildup rates? |
Tony - to continue the Hijack (Sorry Joe) :p
I am facing the same issue, I have had massive Cyano the past few days I posted on zeovit.com for dosing advice and have made the changes. |
Hijack away! Its my thread I can do whatever I want with it.
I am a week away from my second rock change. So far I can't say I've noticed a reduction in my algaes either, the growth however is way less which has got to be good. I also have a little cyano on the bottom. What did the zeo guys suggest to you(Greg)? I guess I could just siphon it out, but if there is a way to make it disappear. The glass stays real clean for about 5 days doesnt need cleaning for about 10. Tony, I think the brown slime means your dosing to much zeostart and food. Try a little less when you dose them. |
Oh and I wanted to add: The more I research and learn about Zeo. It seems every tank needs a diffrent dosing regime in the end. The zeo guide is really just a guide to get started.
|
Tony. I PMed you regarding your dosing. Didn't want to drag this thread into a Zeo dosing thread ;)
J |
I was basically advised to lower my dosing, primarily zeo start for a week. I'm three days in since the switch and I have noticed a reduction.
In the first 4-6 weeks of zeo my green film algae was almost non-existant, but in the following 3 weeks it has been back a bit.. nothing near what it was before I strarted zeo though. I totally agree with you though, the guide is just that, I think every tank will dictate it's own dosing requirements, and the only way to really find that out is through trial and error. |
|
Lando i just finished reading your entire post and i have to say you did a fantastic job. I love the quality of your pictures by the way. I hope my new tank turns out half as well as yours.
|
That birds nest has gotten huge!
|
I am bringing this thread back from the abyss.
Since quitting my day job in Aug08 to work for Marine Aquaria a lot has changed on this tank. I shut it down for about 6 months due to plague algae problems that I did not have time to address then. The good news is I have rebuilt and Joe Reefer's Inwall 120 V2.0 has been running for 3+ months now. Pictures to follow............ |
welcome back mang!....looking forward to the pics......
|
Sweet... looking forward to see them Lando!!
|

What has changed? The Prop tank and fuge have been replaced with a 40 gallon mixing bin. The sump has been drilled for an emergency drain, making water changes almost automatic and very painless. Skimmer is now a BK180. The back of the tank was drilled for the return making it look much cleaner than over the top. The RO unit is plumbed to the mixing bin and tank directly. The rest is pretty much the same, the idea was to make this tank very easy to maintain. I have also replaced the nanostreams with a MP40.
|
Very nice man......almost a mirror image of my sump.....(well the bk and the twin tlf reactors:wink:)
|
Nice looking setup! Making water changes quicker and easier is never a bad idea. Easier is always better.

It's about time, looks good!
You have more fish then I do!! |
