I always start with the plug and keep an eye on the frag for a few weeks. If there is a problem with the placement or light, I can move it around. If I am happy with the placement and the coral is healthy, I glue it on my liverock directly.

If the plus is covered and encrusted, I keep it and new coral grow out of this.

Often the frag need light acclimatation so it is not practical to glue it right away.

Who does it which way and why?

Anyway, I also like to take it off the plug. Although I haven't gotten a frag in probably over a year. I prefer unmounted frags actually. I jam it in a hole or glue it directly to the rock in my display. Works well. But I do mount frags for grow out onto discs or plugs cause it makes selling easier. I found that people often chose the frags that we're on plugs or discs over the ones on golf tees (plastic) so I stopped using golf tees. Sometimes I will glue newly acquired frags onto a old tee for mounting purposes. I've also stuffed a frag into a plastic drywall anchor before and then "screwed" the anchor into a hole in the rock, that way, once the frag is encrusted, the anchor is not visible as it is flush with the rockwork. I find that frags will encrust faster without the use of glue (stuffing it in an anchor)
