But I think only MH is used in home aquaria and hydroponics. Xenon and regular Mecury vapor for example would not be suitable for those applications. So "what is HID" would be too broad of a question for the clue.

actually there are lots that were used, high pressure sodium, people have tried halogen, Xenon is used by people in small nanos, and mercury vapor was used quite a bit years ago also. MH is only one small part of HID lighting.

Perhaps the question should have specified time frame. Either way, rule is that what they say goes. It's probably not wise (or exceedingly polite) to push it.
