Amazing pictures as always, looks great. Did you get a new fuzzy dwarf lionfish? Looks like it from the 1st pic.

Dez 10-24-2009 05:54 PM

Very nice tank and great pictures. I think you should change your build thread title to "trimless" just to statisfy Mindy (aka Myka). :)

Surprised it made it nine pages without someone :boink:
Stunning pictures by the way, very impressive.

Myka 10-25-2009 02:06 AM

Do you mind sharing what settings and photographing methods you're using on your camera to get photos like that? They're stunning!

All taken with Nikon D300 and Sigma 150mm (225mm equiv) Macro
Aperture priority set to minimum (greatest DOF) F/22
Exposure time depending on the picture but around 2-10sec
ISO 200
Preset white balance
Hard sharpness
Noise reduction set on camera
No flash
tripod used
Backgrounds removed in photoshop CS4

hillegom 10-25-2009 02:42 AM

Thanks. I also turn off all pumps to prevent movement during long exposures and I'll ocassionally move corals into better lighting for the picture then move them back.

All beautiful. Nice job. I was interested in a night-time full tank/room shot to see about light pollution. We're just trying to decide what we're going to do for our next tank. We love the rimless idea and your tank is a great example. Thanks for the inspiration!

Skimmerking 11-22-2009 04:48 PM

nice

MMAX 11-25-2009 02:57 AM

What are the dimensions on your tank?

lastlight 11-25-2009 03:44 AM

More photographic gold man. Especially like that last coral what is it? Ricordia?

Are you using feathering on your edges?

muck 11-25-2009 03:50 AM

Looks like a closeup of a killer chalice to me.

I will get that shot for you, I'm waiting to get my wide angle lens back from a friend, should get it this weekend so the pic will be up sometime next week for sure.

Thanks! It's an Acanthastrea Echinata
After removing the backgrounds I apply an inside shadow to eliminate any harsh lines so yeah kind of a feathering effect although I don't use the feathering feature.

MMAX 11-25-2009 10:47 PM

I got a rimless 100gal built last year 48 X 22 X 22, I thought yours looked a bit longer than mine.

Myka 11-26-2009 02:24 AM

A delayed, thanks!!! :D

How's your tank doing these days?

No problem. Yes I get the black backgrounds by removing the originals in photoshop and replacing them with plain black, it's a simple process if you have a defined line to go by. I believe long exposures are key to good macros so yes a tripod is a good tool to have.

Tank is pretty good, the reduced skimming is improving LPS and other coral health but of course it's also increasing algae and since I don't have any algae eating fish it's hard to keep under control. However some of the algae growth is probably connected to a lower than usual ALK and Ca levels since I've added a few clams and corals while also cutting back on water changes. I'm going to be setting a dosing system right away to keep levels up which should help.

Couple new pictures of new additions:

Lionfish will eat small fish which is why I don't have any in my tank. I only keep fish that are of appropriate size so they do not become food. I do however have one exception which is a green spotted Mandarin fish but I've kept this fish with lions before without issues. Marine predators recognize psychedelic/bright colors as a warning sign and don't usually eat such fish.

manaf 11-30-2009 05:38 PM

thx for the heads up i know what im getting now!

manaf 11-30-2009 05:40 PM

It feeds on copepods already in the tank, pretty much any decent sized and established aquarium can handle one or two.

To give an idea on light pollution I took two pictures at night, one with no light except the fish tank and the second with room lights on as well for comparison. Both pictures taken with the same settings from the same position. Room lights each have one 13w CF.

Very cool pic. although I've never seen a lion fish with purple and blue colouration?? Is it a reflection from something else? or is it like Christy's tang that sometimes looks very purple but really it's blue? Just wondering.

The coloration is natural but not always easy to see. To get the picture I waited for the fish to spread its fins and be in a position where the light come through the fin from the back, then added a fill flash to capture all the colors. The edited picture has enhancements to make the color more defined.

Lance 12-12-2009 10:58 PM

Wow! Beautiful picture!

Myka 12-12-2009 11:10 PM

Great photo!! I wish I knew how to do that! =]

How is your tank doing?

sphelps 12-13-2009 01:02 AM

Thanks all! Tank is good just lots of algae :surprise:
