First post

Well, after lurking in the background for so long, I thought this would be as good a time as any for my first post.

Hello everybody.
We started our first saltwater tank on Jan. 1, 2012. A mixed reef 120 gallon with sump. First fish in March.
Going slowly and trying to figure things out.

Michael

Hi to all that take the time to read this. I am new to CanReef and to saltwater but have had fresh water tanks for ever.

I have a 65 gal hex community tank & a 65 gal aggressive tank both with Rena XP2 filter, SeaClone 100 protein skimmer, UV sterilizer & moderate lighting. Both have live sand and rock. Both tanks have been up for 6 months and doing well.

I have several corals in the community tank but would like to add some to the aggressive tank. Livestock in tank at this point is a loin fish, yellow tang, valintini puffer, fox face lo, snowflake eel & a green star sea serpent. I have a few small snail's and 3 large hermit crab's as well. Going to add a picasso trigger, scribbled rabbitfish, niger trigger & a fire clown in the next few week's.

Can someone advise me of what coral's, if any, that I can put in my aggressive tank.

Hey everyone,
Started up my first saltwater reef tank in late september, and I am just starting to get some frags in the tank. But lately after I put some more powerful power heads in I noticed that there is tons of little bubbles. Is this normal for a small tank or is it something I should be looking into more before I introduce anything. All of my snails, crabs and polyps seem to be doing fine and my levels are fine.

Thanks for any help!

That's my first post! It always seems to be problems that bring people to this forum!

n00b alert!.. 54G sump-less setup..
Hey everyone,
I have decided to take a plunge in the salty depths.

I have a 54G tank that I am using for my first SW setup. However due to space limitations & limited budget, I am going to try a sump-less setup. I am looking to keep some coral, LR, couple fish, nothing over the top (in terms of reef).. Kind of a Reef for Dumbies idea.. something to work with and learn from.

-Is a HOB filter (Whisper 60) adequately sized to handle a 54 SW? or should I invest in a Canister system?
-Is a skimmer required right from the beginning?
-What is the recommended light wattage for a tank of this size? (I have 2x39W T5HO @ 36")
-How much GPH should a 54G be running for proper flow?

Any other info you can help me with, and things I need to be aware of in a sumpless system would be great!

Cheers
Josh

It's pretty amazing that this forum still has content from that long ago. Some forums that I've been on would have DB crashes and no backup to recover from.

My first post over 10 years ago was to Tony (Delphinus)

March 1, 2002

Hey Delphinus,

I'm new to this whole canreef thing. There is absolutely nobody in Edmonton that does reefkeeping (well I know a few) so that's why I'm in the Calgary discussion (my home-town is Calgary) I had a microbubble problem for quite some time....annoying isn't it? Do you run an inline pump or submersible one? I find that if it's an inline pump...silicone anywhere that draws water in...it might not leak, but it's sucking a tiny bit of air from somewhere. it worked for me, but took quite a while before I could silicone everything and finally overcome the problem.
