When it was time to replace the Ushio, I temporarily swapped it with a Hamilton 14K I had laying around until I could get to the city and buy another 10K. I absolutely hated the 14K; it was too blue and the shimmer was not as nice, although after awhile I did get somewhat used to it. 3 months later I finally got to the city and picked up a new Ushio 10K. Got it home, pulled the Hamilton and stuck in the Ushio. Guess what? I don't like it now; too yellow and the corals don't look as bright. :der:

 I did that with my new 14k ebay bulbs. put them on there, didn't like them and actually put them for sale on here. I never got around to taking them off and now I like them. I haven't tried putting my old ushios back on yet tho

Doug, the nice thing is: the Hamiltons are only $65 vs. $80 for the Ushio.
The real killer is the 225g lighting: 3x 400W MH @ $124 ea.

Oh, and 8x T5 @ $25 ea. It freakin' kills me when it comes time to replace them. Might have to go shopping for some cheapo E-bay bulbs.

Skimmerking 03-23-2011 12:46 AM

I find the Hamilton 14K's quite nice Mike. Bluish, but not as blue as Phoenix 14K.

Then you should try the 14k ones that i got off ebay. Not as blue as the phoenix ones i had but definately bluer than my 10k's. and only 15 bucks a pop to boot

Interesting. What are they called Darren?

PoonTang 03-24-2011 10:35 PM

They are the 14k ones by Aretimis. HobbyLights on ebay sells them and its a Canadian seller too so no customs hassle either.

Lance 03-24-2011 10:38 PM

Sigh!
My CBB has developed a liking for SPS!
The little bugger picked the flesh clean on two small colonies and has started on my large Pocci colony. He doesn't seem interested in the LPS or Zoas so I'm hoping he won't. If so, I guess I'll have to find a good FOWLR for him somewhere. Stupid fish: I've had him going on two years now and he was totally reef safe. Why are the cool fish the most trouble? Why not a Chromis?

Lance 03-24-2011 10:42 PM

Here's a pic of the little **** heading for some munchies.

christyf5 03-24-2011 11:39 PM

ugh that sucks. one of the reasons why i have never tried a cbb before. theyre too unpredictable

Delphinus 03-24-2011 11:44 PM

Yeah, how disappointing. I was never able to keep acans or blastos in with mine. Guess even though "generally" regarded as "mostly reef safe" they are still butterflies in the end.

I feel your pain: my potters angel is doing a huge number of my gorgonians. I'm not looking forward to trying to catch her but when my new FOWLR is cycled she can move in with my butterflies there. Stupid fish! But oh so pretty....... <sigh>

Lance 03-25-2011 12:44 AM

Thanks Guys. I've lots of SPS in the 90g, and they grow better in there anyway, so it's not the end of the world if I can't have SPS in the big tank. I just hope he leaves the other corals alone. He's one of our favourites and I'd hate to lose him.

fishoholic 03-27-2011 03:39 PM

That sucks  I have to agree though CBB's are to cool of a fish to part with.

The green polyps are definitely brighter and more attractive than the brown ones but they are shorter and don't move in the flow as much. This coral is huge and looked like a large undulating mass. Now it looks like a green fuzzy basketball.

You can see the longer brownish polyps toward the bottom section of the coral and the green short polyps covering the rest.

So now the polyps are turning brown again? Stupid coral can't make up it's mind!

Doug, I'm glad you added the word temperamental in that sentence. When discussing my organ the words: bit and odd should never be used.

Delphinus 03-29-2011 06:43 AM

Lance 04-04-2011 10:52 PM

My Branching Torch Coral was getting too large. (bottom right in the pic) It was growing up against the front glass and making it tough to clean the glass with the Mag Float.

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...h/IMG_2362.jpg

Here's another shot.

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2429.jpg

In this pic you can see where it's been stinging the Hydnophora (behind and above it). I also think it may have been stinging the new Squammy because the clam has been moving away from it.

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2430.jpg

Time to get out the trusty Dremel, hacksaw and goggles.

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2431.jpg

First chunk cut off. (14 heads)
http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2435.jpg

Second chunk cut off. (9 heads)
http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2436.jpg

And left with a piece with 22 heads

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2434.jpg

A nice bath in the coral dip.

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2433.jpg

And then back to the tank.

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2442.jpg

And the other two pieces to the 225g

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2440.jpg

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...g/IMG_2439.jpg

1/2 hour: Mission accomplished. Polyps aren't totally extended yet as they're still a little pouty.

Delphinus 04-04-2011 11:22 PM

Goggles! It is almost as if you have experience with coral-and-other-tank-related-stinky-flying-goo and the perils it poses to one's face and/or travel budget. :)

Man even your frags of it are pretty sizeable. Cool stuff!

lastlight 04-04-2011 11:50 PM

I don't care how skilled you are with that thing Lance... I don't recommend taking it to your organ.

Yes Tony, I've had more than my share of stinky-flyng-goo and the perils it poses.
Yeah, it was a pretty big Torch: 12" across.

Very tricky, and probably quite painful.

Yeah, you guys just have your fun now, 'cuz we'll see who gets the last laugh when "Ripley's" comes calling.
Is there still even a "Ripley's anymore?

Yes, I use it after fragging and on new corals: it helps stop infection, as well as killing nasties that may be hitch hiking on new corals. I also use TLF Coral Revive. Both are good products

fishytime 04-05-2011 03:45 AM

tanks looking great Lance.....and great set of instructional type shots.....for a second there i thought I was in Kiens thread:wink:......

and ya Brad LPS are very delicate (as you probably know) and sometimes no matter how careful you are handling or transporting them, they get damaged.....which like most injuries, opens them up to infection......dipping when you frag or remove or transport them is a good precautionary measure...

A few random pics.

Just how large can a BTA get? This thing has grown to 18" across and I only feed it once in a while. Damn thing is starting to get too big.

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...l/IMG_2444.jpg

As is this guy (9" across) Scoly, Acanthophylia or Cynarina? Anybody know for sure?

http://i371.photobucket.com/albums/o...l/IMG_2446.jpg

Advertised as a Yellow Bird's Nest with purple polyps. I've got it 12" under a 250W 14K and the polyps nearest the light are turning a light green. Huh!

lastlight 04-18-2011 12:37 AM

Considering a small scoly is like $300 bones...you have a nice retirement package sitting in yours !

It was just labelled "Brain Coral" when I bought it. I paid something like $40. It was as big around as a golf ball then. I think it's an Acanthophylia.

BlueTang<3 04-18-2011 01:35 AM

The auzzie scolys are the pricy ones yours looks Indonesian to me and they are up there but not as pricy, its really nice either way.

Lance 05-08-2011 10:19 PM

Grrrrr! Why does this hobby always have to throw you a curve ball every now and then? Everything has been running smoothly for months, but now in the last week my Sailfin has taken a disliking to Bubba the Trigger. Other than feeding time, Bubba will not come out of his cave. The minute the food is gone the Tang starts up on him, flaring his fins and snapping his tail, forcing him back to his cave. I have had the SF for 3 years now and he is about 7" long. Other than acting up on a new fish for a short time, he has never shown much aggression. I'll give it a few more days and if there is no change Mr. Sailfin will be taking a time out in the frag tank.

Here's some pics of the two:

Bummer.. weird how things get all unpredictable like that. Hope they figure things out!

fishoholic 05-09-2011 02:54 AM

That sucks, hope they can work out their differences.

lastlight 05-09-2011 03:44 AM

Good luck bro. I feel your pain. Just got a new pooch and I haven't seen my cat since lol.

What kind of dog Brett? I've had cats and dogs together numerous times, it just takes a while. They'll work it out, especially if they're younger.

lastlight 05-09-2011 06:01 AM

1000!!!

Anyways...

She's a 2 year old rescue from the animal shelter. Blue heeler crossed with something else...maybe german shepard I'm not a dog guy.

She chased a cat that was in our yard up our fence and the cat was def IN her mouth which sorta alarmed me. Our cat has been in hiding and the dog def wants to chase her. Incredibly gentle with the kids and already pretty well trained. She 'eliminates' (see I'm learning dog talk lol) outside like she should.

Here's a quick video I took today. You'd never know that we'd had her home for less than 30 minutes at this point:
