My solution is to drill a few holes in one of my 4 return outlets into the tank. They extend about an inch down into the water when the tank's running. If I can break siphon earlier...well an inch less draining down there is a massive deal!

We (my wife and I) love what you've done with the horse tank. I know she wants something similar some day so do it up right and maybe I'll copy one one day!

nice upgrade. I noticed on your bigger tank that you have a T5 fixture growing sps. What bulbs do you use?

What I did was make my primary drain standpipes a bit taller, so less water drains out of the overflow boxes.....when I get motivated I will hack apart the return line to the pony tank and plumb in a check valve.... that ought to help...FWIW I have siphon breaks drilled into the return lines.

Im running mostly Aquascience bulbs (a combo of the 15s and 22s) with a KZ New Gen thrown in for good measure.

Heres some pics of the acan frags I put in and the obligatory softie I promised the g/f

Ohohhh...I had that softie. Capnella or something...I'm sure you know. Damn thing grows like a weed and then jettisons little baby corals. I hope a piece doesn't make it into the sump. I'm sure even if the pump chewed it to shreds and put it into the 110...it'd make it!

Its only there temporarily....until I can get a toadstool or something less invasive...I finally wiped the 110 of the xenia that was in there....hope I didnt just jinx myself:lol:

fishytime 12-09-2009 03:49 AM

Not too much going on with the pony tank except for a huge new tank algae bloom....this kinda surprised me as the bulk of the rock had been in 110 gallon's sump for months and I didnt expect it....I guess a new tank is a new tank is a new tank it is...there are still some ponies at the shop but I am resisting taking them home until the skimmer for the system finally arrives by three legged donkey:mrgreen:....that and the other reason Im resisting taking them home is the resident seahorse expert believs all of the remaining ponies are female:neutral:

I did manage to make the door for the stand....now all I have to do is laminate the exposed edge and pick some nifty handles...http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP3685.jpghttp://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...e/IMGP3687.jpg

added a few few more newbies to the ponyless pony tank and I also added a pair of sexy shrimp (missed them from the pico days)...

Still acclimating.....

Wow! Incredible Doug. Love the purple polyp gorg and the blastos look great! So wish I could have Coco worms! They look so neat, great shots!

Thanks Guys....I really like the purple sea fan too....when its happy that is....doesnt look like much when the polyps are not extended:neutral:

Well I put a fish in the pony tank.....a blue assessor....beautiful little fish....I was a little worried about him as he didnt eat for a few days, but started eating yesterday....very she little guy...They are supposed to be "low risk" for seahorses (according to my research)....It nice to have something to look at in the tank besides coral and sexies...

Heres a few more pics... I was playing around both tanks yesterday with the cameras, tinkering with settings..

Very nice  I have noticed that my blue assessor is way more timid than my yellow. The yellow is one of the first fish out in the morning when lights first go on.

But, where oh where are the seahorses?

I noticed that you have your assessors in the same tank....do they get along?
Gonna have to get me a posse and rustle some up...... soon

Leah 01-01-2010 03:31 PM

I Q.T.'d them in two tanks and then added them together. They get along fine. I was planning on 2 blue, but one jumped from the tank before I got them shipped. Good luck with the hunt for seahorses.

Love that shot of the Sexy and seafan Doug! Is the pentax your older camera? You crank some really nice shots out with it.

Thanks Brett....the "sexy" shot was taken with the pentax (older PAS) Im super impressed with the macro capabilities...

fishytime 01-23-2010 03:24 AM

Its been a while so here some pics from the still ponyless pony tank

I think I may have a bit of a score here....was a crazy day at the shop yesterday....Kevin got a shipment of corals in in the morning and fish in the evenig...I filled in at the shop while Kevin went to pick up the fish, so of course I scoured the new coral shipment......and found these, there were only 12-16 polyps and I got eight.....

I hoping they darken up a little once they settle in.....I think they are Joker palys?

Kind of an interesting tidbit here.....Im babysitting a blasto for Carmen and have hers and mine sitting side by side.....both corals were from the same shipment.....the blasto on the left is mine and the one on the right is Carmens.....the difference between MH and T5?

Seriously to many things to take into that equation... Parameters, dosing (look at your "spice rack" of dosing stuff!), photoperiod, etc...

PS: Sweet grabs on the zoas. Don't think those are jokers... not nearly vibrant enough imo... Jokers have a purple ring around the mouth in most pics I have seen... like this:

http://www.reefhotspot.com/store/ima...thoa_61414.jpg

fishytime 01-23-2010 04:21 AM

I know there is lots of stuff to consider...we both took those corals home at x-mas so its not like they've been in each of our systems for too long..Im just surprised at the noticeable difference...
I actually like Carmen's blasto better:wink:.....the color I mean.....the coral I mean:biggrin:

JDigital 01-23-2010 04:27 AM

yea, I prefer the green centers as well.. both great though!

So the ponyless pony tank will likely remain......ponyless.......the ponys were sposed to be for the g/f, and the g/f aint no g/f no mo:lol:......so Im thinking of a different direction......not sure what direction yet but, I had my reservations about putting ponys in the tank because of the temps I experience in the summer......so heres what an overgrown ponyless tank looks like.......it was making one heck of a display refugium......I kinda think it looks cool, but I had to get in there and prune some out....

WOW! you weren't kidding on the crazy macro overgrowth! It's a jungle in there!!!!

I find it kinda weird that the colors have stayed "different" on the two blastos! Looks like you've done a good job babysitting! maybe I could take em back...or are you keeping them??

And what are you CRAZY putting a kenya tree in there????
:twised:

Those Coco worms love it in there! soooo wish I could have one but I am sure my copperband would think they are "neat"....to eat!

so.....what will the pony tank be now??????

I still think yours look better color wise.....you can have them back whenever you are ready for em Girly.......your not worried about your angel?

I put the softie in there for the g/f.....that will be the first direction change as its already "dropping bombs" in the tank...... As Tony pointed out earlier, I would hate for a piece of it to end up in the big tank....

Ive always wanted a BSJ, but was affraid that I would add it to the big tank and it would end up moving in at the back of the tank......also really like the thought of a yasha/pistol combo.....

anybody have any other sugestions?

I am hoping my "angel" will behave...she is leaving the other blasto alone...hopefully she was just desliming the brain she was picking at???She hasn't been bothering it the last 2 days? So I am being optimistic!

BSJ would be neat...cool fish! Pistol/yasha too...

Can't belive that macro!!

Don't you be giving Tony credit now Doug!

I'm glad you're going to skip the ponies...maybe it can be some other type of species specific tank though?

You sure have alot of those little nuclear green tipped algae things eh? I had just a single one in my first tank but it sure was bright.

Hmmm, perhaps a trigger tank? Just pop a few small fish in and you will feel the need to "upgrade" in no time. If you need some GSP to go with that Kenya tree just let me know- I have enough to cover that tank top to bottom in wonderful, lush, green carpeting...

I think Im gonna pass one the GSP, Danny.......but thanks for the offer (I think)....

so, as some of you may or may not know, I have an acan eating sexy shrimp:neutral: *wonders if they taste like popcorn shrimp*.....not sure what to do about it......it only damaged two frags and has since left the other acans (and blastos) alone.....Ive made the effort to feed the tank a little heavier in hopes of curbing the little buggers appetite.....

I bumped up the lighting a little as well.....I traded Mikey some frags for my "glo" fixture back.... so now there are 4- 24w bulbs over the tank.....bulbs are 2 aquascience duos, KZ "new gen" and a Giessemann Actinic+........made a little difference to the color.....I think I like it:biggrin:
