I think the buy/sell thread should be the only ones that should be able to be edited. There's some posts in the lounge that have been edited in the past with guys back peddling on things they've said after being called out on something. Specifically the Random Thoughts Thread. I've asked for it to be removed from Canreef with no luck. I just don't read the garbage thread anymore, it's just that easy. Other than that there's nothing really needed for the site. It's good.

What about a live chat room?

This would be interesting. It would probably get off topic fast...but interesting none the less.

The thing with that, and a pet peeve of mine, is that people remove items as they're sold, or adjust pricing in place, etc. I really like to have a historical database of what sold for how much. It's a good reference when buying or selling. I don't think we can just allow titles without body content getting edited, and regardless of us asking people not to remove things, they still do.

We had that for a while. It went off track in about 5 minutes and got forgotten in a couple weeks :)

Nicer/ friendlier staff...

I miss the buy sell on the front page the 3 extra clicks kills me.

I always thought the design was you get the first notice, then have to visit the thread to get further ones. I never use it, but RC works that way.

Do you have any frags left??

your telling me

I kinda like the university idea, but the problem comes up that is it going to be a Canadian university?, if so there won't be a lot of stuff applicable to us as most of there studies are cold water stuff, so a lot of differences, so that would be my only question. the other issue is to get a regular post on related topics from a university, it is going to take more than a little donation, to get a large segment of there time and dedication it would take some big bucks.

there are other ways to "piggyback" on articles and such with subscription services, but I have know idea what they would cost and so on.

I know years ago when ever some one would find an interesting read they would post a link to it and there used to be a lot of discussion on it, but that doesn't seam to happen anymore.

so I guess what I would like to see is a lot more user posted stuff like the old days, we all learned a heck of a lot in a short period of time, mind you we didn't have to many sponsors that we would upset by posting how to make stuff in the DIY forum. so I don't know how much of a concern that would be, and I don't want to be banned for two years for exposing the reality of a deceptive product like I did on reef central .

Just an example of the kinds of threads started that revamping the site would help
I'm sure many of us would benefit from stickies and an up to date library

Setting up a new sump

I've seen many posts on this particular topic over the last quarter, and I've seen many helpful responses from our members
I've personally responded to enough of them on sumps over the last year that I've stopped getting involved

It would definately help everyone if these kinds of topics/answers were easier for everyone to find

mark 01-18-2014 02:09 PM

for buy and selling location simply have people put city in post title. As for entering SOLD, extend time before edit feature is locked out.

Did not read all of the replies so do not know if this was suggested or not. Is there an option to look at posts that are a week old, or a month old....sometimes I read a post, and want to go back to it and the search option has not helped. "New Posts" is great. But sometimes the post is a day or two old. As a newer member I find the site very helpful.

Other random thoughts

Online store I would love to buy some Canreef trinkets(t-shirts, hats, pens, key chains and so on.....) might have to be on a trial basis though as it costs to do this

Newbie contest those starting up first time tanks probably would appreciate the notice prizes not necessary but just having their picture posted is pride enough only open to first timers though those who have been in it a year or more would have an unfair advantage

As social media is huge might be worth looking into advertising the site on mainstream but again is cost involved and is it worth it

Buy/Sell forum is one that has its use but at the same time seems to be a massive thorn in many people's sides I haved used the Buy/Sell before but its a forum I can also live without maybe look into linking it to its own site as it appears to fusterated a lot of people having a link to it's own site might be easier to maintain

Just my 5 cents(seeing as we no longer have the penny)

Phil 01-19-2014 04:55 AM

Canreef is a business and exists with help of Vendors

First u need to bring back vendors lowering the fees helps bring new vendors

New vendors from different areas will bring more members
Yes u make less money but with more vendors= more money anyway

Look how many vendor left due to the increasing costs.
Most of the members In Edmonton also left do to the vendors leaving.
(Using Facebook instead)

More vendors = more members = more money

It's sad to say but without vendor canreef will not be here.

Me and reefwars tryed to explain this before and the thread got off topic really quick and got deleted.

I will say it's nice to see Titus on here actually looking at the problem we told u was going to happen.

Phil 01-19-2014 05:46 AM

Last post for the night lol

Let's brake down the vendor lists

Wholesales(don't really count)
Aqua digital
Reef whole sale
Seacare

Home based

Reef supply's canada
Kraken
Frag cave
Madjelly
Modular led
Fijirock

Brick and morter

Concepts (onley still he because of Denny)
Reef supplies (go reef)
BRS (USA)
Fragbox
Pets and ponds

Now let's say I talk to aqua digital I want some tropical marine stuff I get sent to aquarium illusions (non sponsor ) so now I have to switch to Facebook as there on there to talk about a product. (I'm no longer on canreef)

As this grows it's a snow ball effect.

Now let's look at who left

Brick and morter.

Aquarium illusions
Redcoral
Blue world
Marine experience
Marine aquaria

Home based

Snappy (back with concepts but still a lost store)

There's more I can't remember off the top of my head.

And I know your gonna see more leave befor more come back.

Hello,

Guys and gals, I've read through all your comments and ideas. I've started a separate thread to capture and responded to them here.

Please have a look and continue to discuss. If you have ideas, please voice out. If you can help to contact the aquariums and academics, please put some proposals here. I can't do everything on my own and not all ideas will be implemented but I do want to hear what you think and have to suggest.

Titus

SeaHorse_Fanatic 01-19-2014 06:34 AM

My four main suggestions have already been discussed:

Make surfing canreef on my smartphone more accessible/user friendly

Make it easier to post pics on the site

On another fish forum I belong to, we can look up the list of members currently on, click on their name and start chatting/IMing immediately. Very painless process. This would be a good way to build a stronger community, cause IMing increases communications.

Editing function - sometimes its a bit of a pain that you can only change or add to a post in the first 15 minutes. At least change this for the classifieds so sellers can edit items off their list or change prices over time.

I agree, especially with the last editing function statement, it would sure help to streamline the classified section.

titus 01-19-2014 08:45 AM

Hello,

Okay in terms of being able to edit the first post, the current behavior of only able to edit within the first 15 min was really brought about with us having to maintain some sort of trail of what have been posted to prevent people from completely deleting the contents after items have been sold or pulled.

If we introduce a new area where any items posted can be flagged with the appropriate statuses, then there should be no more concern here. However because we see merits of leaving the 15 min to prevent people from back tracking what they has been said.

Can we start putting together a list of names to be nominated as our resident SMEs? I'd like to see us having streams of periodicals written in the themes of Breeding, Chemistry, etc. Any nominations from the academia or the aquariums?

I have the general impression that quality information is hard to find here.
I see lots of posts regarding colours, appearance and photography, but specific coral care information is hit and miss.
The quality of the membership is the most important, and I would like to see a better organization of information so that if someone wishes to get into the finer details of coral growth and breeding, the information can be found quickly. The search function is fine, but you can spend a lot of time, especially if you are new here, going through irrelevant posts.

The hobby has come so far in the last 10 years, I would like to see people take it to the next level. I can get together what articles and information I have found valuable, and I'm sure there are others here that contribute a lot of valuable information as well.

There just needs to some sort of "tree" organization for all the great information and research that has been done over the years.

Also would be nice to get Vancouver Aquarium and Ripley's (in Toronto) to participate. I am sure they have a few little secrets about reef keeping that we would all like to read about.

And Titus in his sticky thread (now closed) asked:
"I am interested and listening. Can you put together a case and if you know someone in these organizations who may be interested?"

I don't know people in those organizations, but possibly others on canreef do. The case would be to increase awareness of their programs and facilities. For universities, this might attract young canreef members to enroll in courses and studies that they otherwise may not have been interested in. And for aquariums, would increase interest in exhibits and events which would increase attendance and revenues.

Hi Titus:
If items in the first post can be flagged as to there current status it would be a terrific upgrade. I could live with the 15 minute statement editing time if the flagging was added, my suggestions for flagging would be SOLD, PENDING SALE, PRICE UPDATE. Thanks for taking the time to address issues on the forum.

Cheers Laurie

I've looked through a lot of this thread, there are some good ideas.
One thing to keep in mind is this, I've noticed that quite a few people, myself included, don't really know what the site is capable of.
I've been on this site for years, I'm still finding out the "ins and outs" of the functions. I've found something that works and have never questioned it. Truth be told, if I knew the capabilities of the site maybe I'd do things a bit differently.
Then again, I'm old and lazy, so I'm sure I'll just keep doing the same old thing.

I know people within the Vancouver Aquarium and the non-profit Vancouver Aquatic Hobbyist Society (VAHS) fish club and can let them know to contact you, Titus.

Edit: Have sent off appropriate notification emails to have them contact you, Titus.

i go through the 100 almost weekly lol

or have it so it was 100 inbox and 100 outbox

sucks that we have to use an external photo program to copy and paste pics, but at the same time at least its 30 img's vs 10 on RC lol

The Grizz 01-20-2014 01:35 AM

A person that grows there own coral and has there own web site to sell frags should be allowed to post a FS add on CanReef without being a sponser, period!! If we are all in this hobby together then the best way to keep it alive to buy from other hobbyists that have grown the coral and help let the oceans rebuild the reefs naturally.

I personally now of one person that has been banded because SOMEONE ratted him out for a website that had not been updated for over 3 yrs..........why.........simply because he was selling frags for a LOT less then the most. Stores/vendors that carry many many different items can make there profit in many ways to keep the lights on but this one particular person that I am referring to only sells frags to support there own tanks like I do in my other ventures that can not be named here.

Ok this might be just a rant but it bugs me so nough said.

No Greg, he was banned for his outrageous reply to PM. Get facts straight before you vent, k?

Myka 01-20-2014 01:53 AM

Awesome Titus, I'm really excited to see what you have in store this year! :D

I think there should be some sort of "supporting vendor" option that is more affordable for home-based or smaller businesses. Besides Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver most of the stores are relatively small and the current sponsor fees are too high for the revenue generated.

As far as updating articles - I've been wanting to update some articles I've written, but it's not easy for me to do this. I have to harass Brad to edit it for me. :D
