Steve, from what I have read, they have been noticed to lose the occational appendage after a molt every now and then, but no where have I read that they are hard to keep. They just don't do as well in captivity as some stomatopods. That's not to say they don't do well..

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">what I have read is that they usaly only last a couple molts then they die, this might have been a discussion on mantis in general but I seam to remember the peackock being mentioned frequently. now how long they go inbetween molts I don't know and this is also why I kinda asked it as a question not a statment. this is what I have read, if it is false.. good.. because the do look cool.

That pic of a hand fed shrimp is because the shrimp has lost it's raptors. Alex is trying to tame it while it's unarmed (pardon the pun)

Mantis can have trouble moulting, as can many shrimp. They need good water and diet.
Other than that, they're not particularly difficult to keep for many years.

ok question for both of you, I hear and read that the peacock mantis is one of the ones that has the worst survival record in captivity. If this is true then isn't buing a peacock mantis in the same group as buing a morish idol, or clener wrases?

Steve, do you make this stuff up? I have NEVER heard that, and they are the most popular mantis sought. Do you have a link from somewhere stating this? Dr. Roy Caldwell has never mentioned this, as far as I know. He would be the guy to know these things.
