Usually, when you buy a new R/O unit, the membrane comes vacuumed pack and is already wet with either water or some sort of chemicals to prevent the membrane from getting destroyed. That's why they recommend you dispose of the first few gallons of R/O water as this water is used to flush away these chemicals.
