Yes! And I've noticed that a virus scan is run everytime I open a Word document. (Says so in bottom left corner).
I thought maybe this might be the problem, but couldn't figure out how to stop Norton from scanning every single :bad-word: Word document.
(I think I know the Word documents that I have created are pretty much virus free, thank you very much Norton, and do not need this feature).

Any idea how I can shut it off? (Or am I stuck with it).

If it is screwed up now, it will only get worse as you go along. I'd re-format and re-install everthing. It is not as hard as it may seem. This is one thing MS has done right!

I get the feeling this thread is going in the wrong direction.

All I am wanting to accomplish is stop the following dialog box from popping up when I open a Word document:

"The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open. Click OK, and then close open dialog boxes to continue."

I think Matt may be on the right track re: Norton AV. (Scanning the document).

Anyone know how to stop Norton AV from scanning every single Word document, but still have auto protect enabled?
Is it even possible to stop?

In the Norton App, click Options,Other,Miscellaneous. The plugin control (enable/disable) is on that page. I'd disable it and if it solved your problem, leave it off. -->click here for the Norton KB article if you want to go to the source..<--

If you can't figure that out, this will also work: go to "Start", "Run" and in the dialog box, paste (or type) in:
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

That will unregister the plugin and more or less have the same effect as the other procedure.

Microsoft has a office removal tool that will remove old incomplete versions, including registry entries. It is part of the resource kit. Here is a link to the info on it. The resource kit is a 7.5 mb download. HTH

Problem fixed!
Did a bunch of things, so I'm not sure what it was that actually solved it.
Uninstalled Office 2003, again.
Deleted the old computer hard drive data backup. (I have an external hard drive now and so don't need it).
Deleted everything out of the MS Office folder in Program Files.
Reinstalled Office 2003.
Downloaded the updates again. (Four of which I missed last time, and one of those was a Word update. :redface: Maybe this was the problem all along).
Opened a Word document and, voila, no stupid dialog box pop up!

Anyhoo, just want to say thanx much for your replies and puttin' up with a fumblin', mumblin' and stumblin' computer doughhead. :rolleyes:
I hope I didn't waste anyone's time.
If it's any consolation, I worked on this, on and off, all day.
Seems like alot of my time was wasted, but I'm happy, now, in the end.
