New stock and pics
Between losing some fish to a powerbar failure and getting rid or a few aggressive Damsels the tank looks quite empty these days.
Trip to Edmonton yielded a few of Dez's frags and some nice fish and LPS from Shannon, Taylor at BWA.

Regal Tang from BWA, and a couple of Dez frags. Waiting for a new light as mine is not up to the job and frags aren't looking very healthy ATM.

I'm sure that individual reflectors would make it a better fixture , maybe a mod in the future.

My initial impression of this fixture is, Why didn't I get MH lighting long ago.
I'm going from a 2 bulb Hagen to this so there really should be a huge difference, but I am thrilled with this light. I realize that it is not really high end equipment, but for this system at home it is a huge addition. I only have a few SPS and I think that they were already dead from lack of proper lighting. I am going to leave them in the tank for a few days to see if they come back, I am hopeful.
The mushrooms, toadstool and Nems love the new lights as do the torch and frogspawn.

The current light cycle is
Actinics on at 9:00 AM off at 9:00 PM
MH on at 1:00 PM off at 6:00 PM
Moonlights on 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM

Is this enough MH for my lightly coraled tank (mostly softies) ??
If I add more LPS or SPS should I increase this ??
At present the bulbs are factory bulbs, so I am looking at upgrading the T5s for sure, I have 1 Icecap Actinic and am wondering if I should order one more or a deepwater 14k so that the sunrise sunset cycle has more natural light than straght actinic lighting. What do most others do ???
I am happy with the stock MH bulb, it is very white, so I may pick up a Phoenix for a little more blue to see the difference. Any recommendations ??
I will post some tank pics in a bit.

Anybody have any advise for light cycle and bulbs???????

The Grizz 04-24-2011 05:40 AM

Hey Mike, sorry I missed the addition of the new fixture.

As for your light cycle I think you should be good with what you have it set at for the moment. You are making a big jump in light so you don't want to cause any light shock by having the MH on to long. This is almost the exact same as my cycle but I shut the moon lights of @ 6am.

As for the bulbs, all the stock bulbs that come in Oydessea fixtures are crap. I changed my MH's out as soon as I got them with bulbs from EBay. I am running 15000K MH and 12000K T5 in my fixtures ATM but also going to add some dimmable T5's to add a few more colors. Probably actinics, 22000K & maybe Fiji Purple.

ensquire 04-24-2011 07:21 AM

Thanks Greg,
I picked up a couple of those ebay bulbs up and have them ready to go.
But need a 14k deepwater for one of the 2 T5 bulbs.
So when I get that I will swap all the bulbs over.
Looks like my plans are getting changed for my tanks again.
Wife thinks it would be a waste to set up nicer tank at work than the one at home,
So a swapout is in the works here. its like she was reading my mind LOL

What are you running for lights on your FOWLR for lighting? I have 3 fixtures for other tank and will probably just start with fish and nems . 6 bulb T5 probably sufficient until I put corals in ?

The Grizz 04-24-2011 04:41 PM

Right now I have a 4 bulb T5 fixture but I think I am going to try some cheap LED panels on the 116 gal just to see how they do.
