Thanks guys for dropping by, I hope you got your fill of posts counts today

So I am going to decide not to keep the green scroll, and the same goes for the yellow. I like the yellow a bit more, but i think its time that I let go.

a few days ago, one of the tangs got stuck to the vortech, i was able to peel him off, and has been doing good, looking abit thin, then a day ago, i noticed that there was increased aggression towards him.

I was lucky enough to spot him tonight while cleaning the glass, he was totally in daze mode, and scooped him in one litre jar, to relocate to the sump for now.

he is down there chilling with a viper k2, and some browned out frags, nippin on some nori, all he is missing is the silver chain that says "yallo"

fishoholic 10-09-2010 05:58 PM

Poor little tang, glad you were able to rescue him and that he's doing better now.

The tank looks amazing as it is, but taking the scrolls out will free up a lot of space. However I do like the look of them and I imagine it will be hard to part with them since you've had them for awhile.

A tang can get sucked in by an MP40? Is this normal?:surprise:
I'm looking at getting some MP65's.

Thanks,
Mitch

I would think that the tang was in a weakened state, for whatever reason.....the two yellows Ive had seem to revel in swimming head-long into my mp40......cant see how a fish with that kinda strength could get sucked in????

Yeah, the scrolls will hit the buy/sell fourm in a few days, its time.

This happened in my previous tank as well, the yellow tang would graze the side of the power head, and with a high volume of water being drawn in, and their circular body it can spell disaster.
IMO, even a healthy fish would have a hard time trying to free themself, if fully pinned.

so to prevent this from occuring again:

1. clean left hand exposed vortech more frequently

2. added a more central grazing spot

Hey everyone,

it was a good reef day today, I picked up a new coral, and Jay (reefcanada) dropped by to check out the tank and pick up a yellow scroll(thanks), I guess it was too big to fit in his SPS side project, so it made the 200 mixed reef., now i gotta see his tanks, this one piece euro sounds and looks dope.

And a few pics.

new coral from Red Coral pre-order thanks Kevin and Carmen

Hey everyone, hope all is well with you.

Its been awhile since I posted an update, work and life has been really busy as of late.

ya know when you start to look at your reef and you want to change it just a bit, well i had that feeling awhile ago, and removed the left and right hand bommies in my tank. So there are a few scattered Sps, soft and LPS corals in those spots now. Photos, of the tank now look very strange, and I am going to try and take a piece of rock from the sump and place it above so it doesnt look so barren.

I have the vortechs set to a wave mode, something I really didnt like at first but its really grown on me, hence the soft corals (kenya tree).

I did some fragging a few weeks back, and an end result was the lose of nearly all my hot pink stylos, I am really not sure why they bleached after fragging as all was inline, so i guess it was that they are a sensitive coral and didnt want to be fragged.

so no new FTS, until I get the live rock back up from the sump. Here a few corals that are going to be removed from my system.

Delphinus 11-24-2010 05:48 AM

That yellow is off the chart!! Sorry to hear about the stylo's .. that sucks. They're one of my favourite .. too bad they're not that common or hardy apparently.

Hope to one day see this tank in person, or at least a video of it when you're ready.

Do you vacuum your sand?

lorenz0 11-24-2010 06:15 AM

Doug and I were talking tonight wondering where you have been. Looks like you have been a mad scientist on that one side of the tank.

no, I dont vacuum the sand, but I do stir it. I do this when post filter sock change, leave it for a day then stir up anything that might be left on top the sand bed,

I am on the fence of what I will do on either side, if anything.

I have some time tomorrow to play around abit so maybe some new pics tomorrow.

shrimpchips 11-24-2010 06:31 AM

Is that yellow one a pocilliopora damicornis? It's off the wall!

Looking forward to the FTS - I'm sure you'll figure out something brilliant.

Yeah it was a find, almost bleached out, really pale green when I got it, and now its finally attached, and colored up.

I did get some work done on the tank today, and then got side tracked.

I am stoked at the way it looks now, still alittle more work, clear out some sandbed corals, then FTS.

lobsterboy 11-27-2010 08:23 PM

Delphinus 11-27-2010 08:49 PM

LOVE the look of this tank!!! I like the middle island the best. It has these ledges and overhangs in it and really looks like a real reef. My second most favourite feature of your aquascaping is the contrast between bommies and open sand areas. The left bommie for some reason ... it is a little out of place on account it's way less busy than the other two bommies. Realize this is because of the scroll coral needs its own like that but there's something missing on that side somehow. It still looks good though, but it needs some more things around it maybe.

lastlight 11-27-2010 11:14 PM

Awesome like always John. I love your plating corals I wish I had both room and the corals to do that. I think a nice big swaying SOFTIE in front of the left island. I snagged a giant frag of Greg's corky finger today....that'd be sweet behind or in front of it!

Dez 11-27-2010 11:25 PM

I really like the open look John. I am excited to see HUGE colonies as they've got so much room to grow! Good job!

lobsterboy 11-28-2010 04:50 AM

thanks for the input and comps guys.

Brett I did have that in mind to do a gorg in the tank, I picked up two frags last week but havent placed them yet, I would like to try and hold out to see if i can find something i tad bigger though.

thinking on trying another couple of gobies, in particular an orange spot sand sifter and a rainford, anyone have trouble with this combo ?

I had gotten some platys from Jay (reefcanada) a while back and they have done really well, so i might be trying a few more if i can find some nice ones again.

Delphinus 11-28-2010 05:49 AM

Sorry, dumb question .. but .. platys? What are those? I've only heard that name on a FW fish..

2ml phols xtra special

thursday: iron 2drop
friday: Jodi complex 5drop
saturday:stylo pocci glow 6drop + 6 drop zeofood and zeobak
sunday: K-balance 1ml

Delphinus 11-28-2010 06:54 AM

Cool, thanks for that... I need to get re-edumacated on where Zeovit's at these days.. any idea what's different about start3 over start2? I can't wait to try some of this stuff out again when the new tank is ready. I don't have your knack of aquascaping, I've been at it for weeks and I've progressed to a "strong dislike" of what I've done so far, which I guess is an improvement over "hate it" but man it's a slow process.

With this new tank did you do all those dosings right away or did you ramp into all that?

ahh come on Tony, just get the drill out, some rods and expoxy and then bam. Rock work done. I dunno I guess it takes time, I did change mine out even after it was set up for a few months, start with something fresh and then go from there. It cant be that bad, can it ?

For start3, all i have read is that, it is more user friendly and that there is less chances of diatoms blooms when using this, when compared to start 2.
so less chances of over dose.
there are a few other new products that came out as well, but its the start3 that i really want to try.

yeah it pretty much ramped up to this, minus the dosing of k-balance which two months ago I was dosing quite heavy, then really turned it back.

Ah the building part is easy and kinda fun, the "liking the end result" part seems to be a little more elusive. It's no "Lobsterboy" Zen I'll tell you that!!

Neat, we'll have to watch for that. If you notice some in please post about it. :)

Hello everyone and Happy New Year to all

After a very busy season, I enjoyed sometime off, going back to Cape Breton for a few days for the christmas break.

I had a co-worker look after my tank while away, the ease of living relativity close to the aquarium during the holidays out weighed the inexperience with aquariums he had.

When coming home, I expected to fine things in not the best shape, and I wasnt far from wrong.

A purging skimmer, that must have spilt at least 3 cups of skim mate back into the tank, micro bubbles every which way, LPS and SPS bleached colonies, and brutal red algae.

I took some pictures to show before and after, things are getting back to normal, but still not ideal.

Sadly 4 of the 7 died, the 3 that remain have their days, but out of ten I would give them a 8 on good behaviour.

lastlight 01-06-2011 06:35 AM

If I could have a tank full of the nutty bright pink coral I'd be in heaven WOW i love the colour on that! All those colonies you removed...did they all perish? I can't believe in that timeframe with essentially no skimming things changed that fast. Is this due in part to your use of zeo? Are the tolerances tighter?

Your 'scape still makes me frisky man.

Skimmerking 01-06-2011 12:43 PM

Dude looks great man , I thought that you were only go to do Pocci's in the tank

Dez 01-06-2011 02:49 PM

Hey John, great recovery. It doesn't even look like you suffered any losses with the after shots. Colours are dope.

kien 01-06-2011 03:56 PM

Only a master reefer could shake off a disaster like that and make a recovery look easy. Very nice :)

lobsterboy 01-25-2011 07:15 AM

hey everyone, thanks for the comps.

to sum things up, i havent a clue, in more ways than one, lol.

things are back on track.

i changed my lights out for KZ, i dont have any pics, but i must say with just the blues on in the morning, its pretty sweet.
