I hope everyone in the south is alright. I am not a news reader so came to know about it late. Being from a flood prone country, I know how painful it is to cope up with floods.

I wish all the people the best and hope this dreadful weather will soon be over.

There is huge devastation in Bragg Creek, High River, Banff and Canmore.

All that water in Banff and Canmore has to come through Calgary sooner or later. I don't think we've seen even the worst of it yet. It's not raining here in the city but it's been getting steadily worse all day upstream.

This is way worse than 2005, and there was significant damage to the city back then.

What a sad terrible day for so many.

Hard to imagine the destruction when I'm sitting in my office looking out the window and see blue skies.....

Like I said, I am from a very flood prone country and I have suffered the worst. I know how terrified people can be, especially if they are not used to such incident at regular basis. Hope everything gets well soon.

Hard to believe considering the weather is kind of nice where I am, don't think I'll be heading to the city anytime soon. Hope everyone in the zones are come out OK and the power cuts don't destroy any ones tanks.

Talked to friends and family today in Canmore and it's bad. A few of them have been evacuated and are staying with other friends. One of our friends back yard is gone and the Cougar Creek was only a few feet from the house. They're not sure if it's there still :(
And my wife's cousin owns a little ranch beside the rail tracks that they do horse back rides and such and it's 2' under water. They had to move all their horses 2X as the water just kept rising.

Sorry for being ignorant but where is the upstream coming from? I thought Calgary and the adjacent areas are situated in the highest point in whole Alberta.

Cougar creek in Canmore comes straight out of one of the mountain valleys, and joins the Bow River right in Canmore. With all that rain and the resulting melt of snow pack filled and overflowed the creek bed which is pretty much dry most of the year. That right now is creating most of the damage there I believe.
I lived there 20 years and every year that creek floods and screws up the railway and bridge that goes over it. Usually they are able to get some machinery in there and clear debris before it damages anything but I guess this year was just too much.

Sorry to hear this!! So terrible. I've grown up here and I've never seen anything like this. YEs we get bad storms, but so many areas affected.....I hope your friends and family are somewhere safe and that the worst is over. Somehow I don't think it is with more rain in the forecast....:sad:

I've lived beside the river in this community for over 30 years and I've seen the river crest quite a few times. This is definitely the worst it has ever been!

I'm actually in deer ridge but we called 311 and the operator said we were included with deer run. It looks like nobody else has left deer ridge ( we are higher up so no flood risk I don't think) but I will drive back around 3am to see if in fact my area was forced to leave. Check he power too. Is it legal to enter an evacuated area to run a generator ?

Let me entertain all of you out of towners on my drive into work;

*Someone flipped there mini van and it is currently hanging OVER the railings of Glenmore.
*The full Lafarge plant is under water, including what looks like 30 cars/trucks.
*The off ramp to Deerfoot north bound is UNDER water, had to offroad in my civic to get into the highway.
*The Inglewood golf course is now the Inglewood River.
*I'm physically scared driving over the Caffrope bridge.

All I can say is best of luck to those that are being effected, this is serious.

Interesting....75,000-100,000 people evacuated in Calgary, city has capacity to take in 2,500 people in shelters, however they have only serviced about 1600. The rest are with family, friends and even strangers who have opened their doors! What an amazing community we live in!!

My drive to work went from 64th Ave down deerfoot to pagan. At 6:45am the river was maybe 5-10 feet away from the road. Inglewood golf course is more like the Inglewood islands right now all you can see are a few green "bumps" poking out of the water but I dont think thats gonna last long.

So I turned around and went back the shop...to find out we are all on call with all services vans loaded and ready to go. (Electricians so we know our downtown customers will be calling once this clears up)

On the news they just announced that the City of Calgary might have to turn off the power grid which will affect the majority (or entirety) of the city. This is dependant on how much more severe the flooding gets.

I just checked the weather network and we are to get 10 - 20mm of rain today. That plus all the water surplus from the mountains.

Please plan appropriately.

London Drugs may have some useful appliances! Good luck. If you can get to a Canadian Tire, they would have some camping supplies. A propane BBQ would also work.

I heard the same thing on global and 660 news. They said its a possibility, not probability.

My community is not affected by the river floods, but all the storm drains are being overloaded and the pooling on the roads is substantial. All the cities systems are being taxed at the moment and who can say what can affect the power.

I don't have a generator and debating picking one up....

Went to canadian tire and london drugs and they don't have heat packs. If there's a blackout, I will just cover the tank top with styrofoam and put a blanket over it and hope for the best. Sorry for such concern about my tank but thats the only property that I have over here :(

Latest update suggests nothing relating to additional power or water shut off for unaffected zones. Those outside the zones are better off staying home rather than adding to the traffic issues to chase down supplies and generators.

Everything is normal by me, water seems fine, not even raining anymore. We have a canal behind the house that often rises with heavy rain and snow melt but it hasn't risen at all that I can tell.

Oh and I think the issue with Calgary water right now is treatment of freshwater not raw so people should refrain from using water especially for our luxury tanks ;)

Isn't profiteering illegal in Canada? I am completely shocked by the events and how they unrolled. However being in Emergency Services myself I am extremely proud of not only The Emergency Services (paramedics, military, police and the FF's) I am just as proud of all the volunteers and people sand bagging and providing assistance in any way they can.

No truth to this whatsoever. Home Depot has issued an apology on their website and facebook page about this and will refund anyone who brings their receipt back to the store. They said it was not directed by Home Depot and was just the brain child of the store manager, who has been dealt with.

The same 24 pack of water here is $4.95 plus $2.40 deposit just for reference.

No truth to this whatsoever. Home Depot has issued an apology on their website and facebook page about this and will refund anyone who brings their receipt back to the store. They said it was not directed by Home Depot and was just the brain child of the store manager, who has been dealt with.

The same 24 pack of water here is $4.95 plus $2.40 deposit just for reference.

Well thats how it has been explained from gas stations, corner stores along with some grocery stores. Home Depot might be able to work out a deal with distribution due to the amount they bring in. So I beg to differ as I am sure this is how a lot of stores are forced to price. Flats and Singles are shipped to the store with difference UPC codes and I know this from being a receiver in a grocery store for many years.

Along with Walmart, Costco, every major food chain, etc. that sells flats of water from $5-$10 depending on brand. If you want to justify a 900% increase in the price of a flat of water by one Home Depot store over night to screw over your fellow Calgarians then that is up to you I guess. But even corporate Home Depot had to apologize for this. You really think that other stores pay more than this from their distributors? They could just go to any large store and buy from there if that was the case. You have obviously never been on the purchasing side of the business.

I saw the news report about this; if you look at the guys receipt that he took a picture of and sent in, he went to a self checkout and individually scanned 24 bottles of water. Regular price at a gas station is what about $1.50-$2.00 for a bottle of water... Not Home Depots fault on this one; just someone looking for Drama

Sadly there will always be these types of people around but I don't know if that is the whole story. According to Home Depot there was an internal error on their part that effected a small number of customers but has been corrected, so not just one guy. Not sure why HD would state this on their face book page if it were not true. Regardless, it was not corporately intentional (that has been clear from the start) and has been rectified and I am sure they will be donating lots of supplies over the next several weeks.

I came out of not having power for a few days pretty well. My battery back up worked well for the first day but after that ran out of juice.
Was able to borrow a gen set from my son in law so I was able to keep some flow going in all tanks with livestock and also get my freezer & fridge running before food thawed or spoiled. Only lost a few corals that couldn't take the cold water temps because of no lights or heaters. (forgot to close the basement windows so it got pretty cool)

Just got back from a trip up north, but saw on the news there all the devastation. Unbelievable...., is all I can say!! My sympathies go out to all those that suffered losses, especially to their homes and businesses. I know Calgary and Alberta is strong, and have no doubt that people will rally hard and the recovery and rebuilding will proceed as quickly as possible.

And that includes the emotional stress and turmoil. I know I would have been going crazy if my home and neighborhood would have been affected like I saw on the news, and some of the pictures here on this forum.

Best of luck to everyone in Calgary, High River, et al, and hope your lives get back to normal as soon as possible.
