Finally getting to post this process. The beginning was a lot smaller system and a Volcano replica tank... But after seeing the size of the small 50 Gallon tank.... I just couldn't do it. I needed to go big again.

So now i'm going permanent, and slow. Making sure things are done right to the best of my abilities (and budget lol).

Unfortunately I was going to use a 7.5 foot X 20" X 20" display that I purchsed, but it incurred some damage sitting in my garage, chips on the corners, so I will get more into that later. But needless to say I think i'm in for buying a new display.

Goals:

Easy water changes. This is HUGE for me, as I absolutely hate lugging around hoses and buckets. So this system will have a full water change system with a built in drain. Nothing but a couple of valves turned and switches flipped for a full water change.

System Volume. I want a lot of filtration water volume. Lots of room to add things like different types of fuges, remote DSB, Mangroves etc etc. I could go the simplistic way here, but thats not what I like to see when I see fishrooms. I like to see large, multi-tank filtration systems with ease of access to all of them. I like having multiple tanks with lots of different types of macro etc.

Access. No more bending over to try and squeeze under a stand to get at something in the back of the sump. Anyone who has met me knows that me and tight spaces simply wouldn't work lol!

Simplistic design in the DT. I'm going with the simple, minimal open space look in my display. I've always had tanks with lots of live rock in them, so this time I'm going for a few smaller island stacks of rock, and lots of swimming room for the big fishies.

Ventillation. Becauseall of my filtration will be housed in a closet type environment, I will need to be able to vent the humidity out. Luckily, the way my house is designed, it will be easy to do this.

Quarantine. My biggest change, will be having a large quarantine setup. In my last FOWLR, I lost an emperor angel, flame angel, cleaner wrasse, and others because I introduced a Powder Blue Tang without quarantine. Stupidest mistake ever. I will be utilizing 3 48" tanks in this setup (one un-divided for larger fish, one divided for smaller fish and a DSB for wrasses, and the sump).

Excuse the Paint drawings... for some reason I like the simplicity of it VS. sketchup!

Here is the basic design for the system.

And the Quarrantine tanks.

Paint? How the F did you make the drawing in Paint? I can barely write my name in spray paint.

I'm new to this, but the set-up looks impressive to me!

It turned out like this:

BUT.... then I decided to go big again. So the design changed. Here is where I am at now.

Both closets are painted with Kills Premium. All wood work in the main sump closet (right) is done.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20130410_175903_zps87ead359.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20130410_175903_zps87ead359.jpg.html)

The challenge was getting the drain, electrical, water and ventillation into/out of the closet. Luckily, I live in a 4 level split house, so the beams run all the way into my basement laundry/furnace room.

So I cut a hole in the drywall, and ran the 1.5 ABS drain, 4" vent, electrical from 1 of the 3 circuits, and 1/2 pex water line for my RO.

Also decided to reinforce two of the legs on the Brute storage bin stand. The other side I wont bother, as these will be bolted to wall studs on that side.

Here are the stands, still have to paint the reinforced Brute stand.

The 4" vent will have a large in-line fan sucking air out of the closet, which vents outside. There is a large hole with a fan in it, for air to pass through the adjacent walls inbetween closets. Plus I run a de-humidifier in that room outside the closets as well.

Moisture shouldnt be an issue at this point. But once I'm done all the other projects in the house, I will be planning an HRV. It's just not in the budget right now.

Good Party

When you do your water changes, are you just dumping the volume of the sump or do you drain part of your DT as well? I hear you about the hoses and pumps and buckets. I like the ease of your setup...

Haha, yeah it was a gooder. Beleive it or not.... it was an airsoft bullet that cracked the front payne. lol.

The first skimmer tank will be the one that gets drained. It is about 30 gallons. It has a hole drilled into the middle that goes right to the drain in the laundry room. Then gets filled by changing the flow in the saltwater mixing pail from re-circ to fill. I figure this is the best one, as it is the point of entry from the main display, and will probably build up a lot of detritus and stuff. So i'll just give the water a mix to stir it all up then dump it.

This tank:

I am already planning on an upgrade for that first skimmer sump. The current one is around 50X15X10, and will turn into a frag tank outside the closet. I will get a new one very similar, but a bit bigger for larger water changes. I was thinking something like 50X24X12 for the new one

Bored... SO I figured I'd post pics of how I re-built my bottom return sump.

It looked like this when I started. I think it was designed for freshwater, with the shelves on the left etc.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Copyof20121204_201207_resized_zps75a416cf.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Copyof20121204_201207_resized_zps75a416cf.jpg.html )

So I stripped all the baffles:

Then got a couple more baffles and a dual 4" filter sock holder from concepts and started putting everything back together:

Love the spacers/supports!!

And also rescued this little guy from a fellow reefers tank that was leaking and threw him into my 39g Bowfront.

No idea why he would choose the powerhead only minutes after being put in... but to each their own!

Closet Door closes without issue. Lots of clearance actually.

And I have another issue..... Where the heck do I put the RO unit now?????? It did go on that crooked mounting panel behind the frag tank. I think I'm going to mount it higher above the frag tank.

I could still mount it behind the frag tank, as there is lots of room, but then replacing filters and viewing my TDS meters would be ridiculous.

So. A tonne has changed. But now this build is on in full force. The winter really sucked. I hate the cold weather. And working out in my garage would have sucked. Now that the weather is nice... it's on! My main issue with my water change design, was standing water after a water change. I hate that idea. Call me OCD, but I hate it. There was simply knowhere to drain access sitting water. So the Basement it was. Details below.

Some major changes to my design:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/BasementWaterchange_zps5423f380.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/BasementWaterchange_zps5423f380.jpg.html)

And the typical plumbing supply pictures! I took this after the water change system... So it could have been cooler :-) - Let the plumbing begin!

1. Water change station is now down in my laundry room. I will pump the water up via a Mag24 into the water change tank. This allows me much more space for my frag and DSB/Fuge tanks. Hopefully when I get to water test this weekend, the Mag24 will be ok with the 10 ft head. The pump is plugged in to an extension cord that I ran from the laundry room and hooked up to my American DJ switchable power bars. this allows me to be upstairs to turn the pump on and off when the tank is full. The drain system remains the same.

I still have to drill the holes for the uni-seals in the Brutes. Out of the 10 hole saws I have... I don't have a 1.75" for the Uni-Seals. So thats next. Here is the Mag24 all hooked up.

I also made this little acrylic holder/protector for my power supply. The nice thing about this build, is that I'm using three different circuits for the power, so I won't be overloading any one circuit, and I don't have to add a whole new dedicated set of breakers.

Next up, I have to go get my three new RO canisters from Eli (he was kind enough to order them in for me!). For anyone who missed my other post, I left them in the garage over winter and they exploded. Must have had water inside that froze. Here is the damage:

Holy Paint Skills Batman!! I like the look of that way better than sketch up ... awesome work!

Set up looks very well planned. I really like the way you have your support tanks set up, very smart idea. Pretty sure when I plumb in my frag tanks and ATO Res and Fuge during my move in the fall ... I'll be coming back to this thread. Pure genius in terms of simplifying maintenance.

And if there is one thing that ends up being an absolute truth in this hobby for me after 10 years ... if maintenance is difficult to do, it likely won't get done. The easier it is, the more frequent it will be kept on, and the better your system will be as a result of that.

So, in all, awesome job!!

Took a head pressure measurement for the 2400 GPH Mag24. Looks like I should be getting 628 GPH out of the end of the pipe into the water change tank. That means I should be roughly 4 minutes to fill again.

The Mag24 sure does push water.

I did find one small leak though. After about 15 minutes of running, it was only one small drip. It's coming from the middle joint on the verticle pipe here, right before the ball valve. Any ideas on how to seal that? Should I just try more glue around the joint?

That looks awesome! I like the spinny water exit pipe thing on the left side bucket.

Yeah, you could just try more cement around the joint in question. It might look like butt afterwards but it should work.

Alternatively you could hacksaw it apart, pry the pipe pieces out of the joints and redo it. Takes a bit of elbow grease but it's do-able.

Or if you can get some clear PVC cement, you could just use that. You can get clear at Western Pump.

Yeah I'm going to try some more cement for now. It's definitely a small leak. I don't really care what it looks like, because it's in the laundry room. I have to run to western pump for some spaflex anyways, so I'll pick up some clear while i'm there!

that looks BOSS! I need to make one of these !

Why thank you!

Got the drain all connected and plumbed. I decided to tap into an existing drain pipe in the laundry room instead of using the floor drain. I thought that the flow from the water change sump might be too much for the floor drain, and I would have to wait for it to drain at a certain speed. This was a little more difficult because there was paint on the pipes. So lots of primer later to get a good solid surface, it looks solid.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Mobile%20Uploads/20140503_144413_zpsguqrzomc.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140503_144413_zpsguqrzomc.jpg.html)

Drain comes out into the laundry room

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Mobile%20Uploads/20140507_174731_zpsm2grvmn5.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140507_174731_zpsm2grvmn5.jpg.html)

Then goes into an existing drain pipe (from the kitchen sink).

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Mobile%20Uploads/20140507_174724_zps7xpnpt86.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140507_174724_zps7xpnpt86.jpg.html)

Also go the return lines from the water changing station back into the tanks. The one on the left will be for saltwater to fill the water change tank. The one on the right is to fill my ATO container with RO water. I will leave it all hooked up and ready to top up my ATO resevoir until I have to do a water change.

I also ran an extension cord so that I can just flip a switch on my American DJ powerbar to activate the Mag24 to top up the RO water from upstairs.

Yeah unfortunately Eli was trying to do me a favor and they did not come with the tops. I thought he was ordering them from BRS, but it obviously wasn't from them. They only come with the tops at BRS. But whateves. Just means i'll have to wait longer before using RO water. I wanted to water test with RO, but i'll just use tap water until the new canisters arrive.

This amount of flexibility makes me mad jelly.

I literally just spent the last 15 minutes following all the pipes in your tank/plumbing diagram. My only advice would be:

Find some way of labelling all those gate valves in a really in your face manner. By my count you've got to change the position of gate valves on different floors 12 times in a specific sequence to complete the entire circuit from water change, to salt water storage refill, to ATO refill. It's probably the weakest point in your system as it introduces the potential for absent-minded human error. In my system the same pump that empties my water change chamber also drives my GFO reactor. Since the GFO reactor is always running, I put two gate valves between the pump and the drain just to be safe. However, twice now I've gotten interrupted or distracted during a water change and opened the valve to my GFO reactor, turned the pump back on, and walked away without having closed the gate valves to the drain. Thankfully my ATO sounds like a bucket of water pouring in to a toilet so I've caught it really quickly both times, but I'm definitely the weakest link in the system I built.

In your case all it would take is absent-mindedly leaving that gate valve to the upstairs open when you refill the salt water storage bin to either empty half your RO container on to your upstairs floor, or in to your system depending on how you left the valves after the water change.

I know it adds cost and it's redundancy you'll probably never need, but if it were me, for peace of mind I'd want there to be one pump and a dedicated run of pipe just to bring salt water up to the water change tank, and another pump and run of pipe for the fresh water. That way you'd only need to worry about changing the position of two valves (Fill ATO reservoir or salt water reservoir), and they'd both be on the same floor and right in front of you when you needed to change the plumbing 'state'. That would also make it physically impossible to accidentally foul your stored fresh water with salt water.

I'd be constantly second guessing myself and running to the basement to make sure I wasn't filling my ATO reservoir with salt water the way it's set up. But then I'm an air head. Other people might not have the same challenges I cope with on a daily basis.

However, your system saves the need for a second pump and is a way more efficient use of pipe space. I'm still mad jelly, just make sure you're extra careful.

Thanks adam!

There is a chance of human error as usual. However the way I plan on doing this, will be in stages, so that there is less changing of valves all in one sequence. Hopefully, If I follow my plan, things won't go bad! I hope to mix my salt container a few days before the water change, so hopefully that would eliminate a mishap when turning valves.

The only real chance of failure here is the chance that I leave the valve to the RO bin open when filling the sump. I do plan on having a cheap/small controller for my water change system to control perameters in the future, so maybe I could also do a float switch that turns the Mag24 off when the level in the sump reaches a certain level. It might be an idea with or without a controller. I do have an old JBJ ATO with dual float switches that actually might work great for this! I will put it to use.

I also have built (not shown yet) two 1/2" overflows on the brutes that lead directly to the floor drain just in case they boil over. This will help if the float switches in my RO unit fail.

Hopefully by doing the water change in a span of a couple days (in regards to mixing the salt water before hand) it will eliminate a few chances of valve turning errors.

So, I need some advice. Should I continue to run my manifold off of the fuge/frag tank return pump like I originally designed. Or should I run it from the 1st stage sump via an extra Mag12 I have sitting around? I would have it recirculating back into the tank because the 1200 gph would be a little much for the manifold, considering only 3-4 outlets would be in use.

I figure if the manifold for the reactors (carbon, GFO, and calcium reactors) are fed directly off of the 1st sump, the water will be straight out of the display, and would be in the best position to be polished/filtered. What do you think?

I also like the location of the manifold on the right wall. it overhangs the tank, so if I did have any leaks, it would leak back into the sump. If I fed it with the bottom return pump, I would have to mount it on the back wall, and if it leaked, it would hit the floor below.

I also got the frag tank and rack all set up, and the two fuge tanks all done (except for the acrylic overflow teeth....have to go to concept). The taller rear tank will have an 8" DSB and floating mangroves. It will cascade into the bottom fuge which will house the duplex sump idea (egg crate structure on the bottom to create a benthic zone, then live rock, and cheato on the top). It will then overflow into the live rock compartment of the return sump.

06-13-2014, 04:48 PM
Setup looks fantastic!

I'd say keep the manifold where it is too for the same reason.

I guess there's no reason you couldn't just have the mag12 dialed down (backpressure / head pressure aka "closing the valves on the output" means the pump uses less electricity - weird when you think about it - it may lift the water higher, but the impeller turns slower as a result - and it's the speed of turning that influences how much energy is being consumed). But yeah a mag12 is a big pump that you'd only need a fraction of to run those reactors. Can you consider a smaller pump? Trade the mag12 maybe if you have no other use for it?

FishyFishy!
06-13-2014, 05:01 PM
Yeah I definitely could trade it for a smaller version. Maybe a Mag 9.5 would be better. But I still don't mind having it recirculate back into the tank, shouldn't be an issue. I was just tossing around ideas for mounting the manifold when I came up with the idea. It's nice and clean where it is, and I can run all of the output pipes for the reactors easily. Everything will be super accessible this way. I think i'm going to leave it like this.

It will be nice to have more flow to the left closet as well without the manifold T'd off that pump. I will also have controllability with the DC pump speed to the frag tank.

Oh gosh no! haha. It will be up and wet this week. Just have to plumb the rest (which I will be starting tonight). And if everything goes to plan, the next thing I will be buying all the frikin bags of sand for the DSB.

I'm actually planning on cycling the fuge's before even adding livestock, so calcium reactor won't actually be required for a while.

I will add, that when you don't have the $$$ to buy everything new, everything else takes 3 times as long to do lol. I also have to acid bath all of the used LR i've been collecting for ages haha. Finding the time for all of this is just crazy.

When you had those two sumps under your 131 FOWLR add on, did the 3 bulkheads without valves work well to transfer water into the sump below? I was playing around with ideas last night, and I think that I would like to just have them all open and flowing with no valves.

Yes, they actually worked perfectly. Plus it wasn't that noisy at all. I think because the water flowed out of the bulkhead horizontally, then elbowed at 45 down into the next tank.

Mocked up the return pump plumbing. Do you think that I should keep the ball valves? I figured they would be handy to cut off water flow if I need to service the check valves.

So I decided to up the size of the ball valves on the return pumps to minimize flow restriction. The 1" true union ball valves that I have been using are tiny inside! They actually reduce in size by about half from your standard internal 1" pipe diameter. So I measured the inside on a 1" pipe, and then the inside of a 1.5" true union ball valve, and the internal diameters were almost the same. The check valves also have a large interior diameter.

These 1.5" valves are frikin huge, but they will work well at not reducing the flow like the 1" would have.

Here is the interior comparison of a 1" to a 1.5"

Also got the finishing touches on my manifold. 4 X 1/2" barbed fittings to go to my reactors/UV.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20140625_223115_zpsf15vwgtw.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20140625_223115_zpsf15vwgtw.jpg.html)

Frag tank drains are all plumbed.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20140625_223134_zpsvougrkyt.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20140625_223134_zpsvougrkyt.jpg.html)

And the fuge drain from fuge to main sump is done as well! I have to use a different (frikin expensive) ball valve from western pump, because of the lack of space, and the slight bend in the plumbing into the other closet. This one was a little shorter, and allowed me to use the two 45 degree fittings to make the bend. Only thing is.... the handle is orange. So I will remove it and paint it red like the rest asap! Call me OCD... But it has to match!

Well...things were going well tonight. I got the return sump in and situated. Return pumps in.

Aaaaaaand then as usual.....my luck/stupidity got the best of the evening...

First off...I cant wiggle my 10 gallon ATO tank in beside the bottom sump. No matter how many times I tried. It fits on paper...but getting it in after the sump is in there is impossible....so now I have to dump more money into a custom slim ATO tank. Yay! OH YEAH...and I forgot to mention that I broke the 10G tank while doing this...

But wait! It gets better! While moving the return sump back into position after attempting to stuff the ATO tank in, I elbowed the return drain from the fuge....and broke that tank too!!! Wwweeeeeeeeee!!

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20140709_220059_zps7mxyjdhg.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20140709_220059_zps7mxyjdhg.jpg.html)

So needless to say, after cracking two tanks im calling it an evening. This one will go in the books...especially my pocketbook! Which already hates me.

Hung the frag tank light last night - Hamilton 2 X 250W MH + 2 X 54W T5's. Just received my two brand new radium bulbs (not installed yet). Everything fit together nicely. I have lots of room to raise and lower the fixture, and the ballast fit perfectly under the fuge tanks on the floor.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20140721_223145_zpsi4xl0wfz.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20140721_223145_zpsi4xl0wfz.jpg.html)

And this is kinda gross.... When I tested my water change system, I just used tap water. I let the last remaining bit dry out/evaporate. Well here is what is in our Calgary tap water... This is the collection after razorblading the brand new tank bottom last night.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20140721_224039_zpsemu7dxdb.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20140721_224039_zpsemu7dxdb.jpg.html)

And thanks to Denny @ Concept, here is my new 10 Gallon ATO container. Instead of having the ATO tank to the right of the sump, it now resides behind the sump, leaving a perfect amount of room beside the sump for the CO2 tank for my calcium reactor. I was getting worried about where to put it, so things just worked out! It's a good thing that the ATO didn't fit/got broken.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20140712_182106_zpsij0tqqqn.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20140712_182106_zpsij0tqqqn.jpg.html)

ATO tank is now fully plumbed into the water change system's RO/DI tank for quick fills.

Next thing to do, is get a new 50 gallon fuge built after smashing the old one... and then I can do a final water test!

Well.... It's running!!!! I decided to use this tank that I picked up to use as a brackish water archerfish tank. It's 79" X 18" X 18". I will cycle the tank with this until I can afford to get a brand new one built.

All the plumbing is finished, with exception of the fuge/frag setup because of the tank I smashed.

And the used equipment woes continue to bite me in the a$$.

The one DC return pump that I bought off a member dosn't work. It's the power supply. Works with the known good power supply. So now I have to find a new power supply. Does anyone know where I should start to find one? I'm in no rush, as the fuge and frag tanks aren't ready to get wet anyways.

Also one of the WP40's I purchased from a member dosn't work either.... lol. I guess that will teach me. Should have just bought new.

But.. With this smaller tank, one WP40 puts out a mad wave!

Just did a bleach and acid bath for all my dry rock i've had sitting around. It worked fantastic!! All the rock is now super clean and nice and white. I put bulkheads and valves forndrains in the bottom of two garbage cans for this process.

1st was the bleach soak. I used genaric bleach from walmart. These garbage cans are 34 gallons. Filled about 3/4 with rock. I added 2 gallons of bleach to each can. Mixed it up and let sit for 6 hours (until it stopped bubbling)

After the bleach, I drained it and filled/ rinsed the rock 3 times (until the bleach smell was minimal).

Then filled again and added the muriatic acid (got it from oasis pool and spa). Added .5 gallons to each can, then waited until the reaction stopped, and added another .5 gallons to each can. I then let it sit for 4 hours.

Active Tech in Calgary sells regulated power supplies, just pick the right wattage for the amount of pumps you want to run on one supply. 24V 150W link below.

If the power supply that failed is from me let me know, I'll help you out on replacement cost.

Would the 150W be enough? The power supplies say "100-240Vac 1.8A, 50-60 Hz)

I'll totally admit, when it comes to electricity....I know absolutely nothing lol.

That's the input, read the output specs. Should be 24VDC @ X amount of amps. I believe the 2640 pumps are rated at 85W or 3.5Amps so to run one pump you'd want a 100W supply, for two pumps a 200W supply. You can always go bigger as well, just not smaller as you'll burn it out.

Ok so you need a 24VDC with at least 5.0A to match the existing. So you could either run one off the 150W I linked previously or run two off a 240W like this

After the acid bath, I let the rock dry out for a couple weeks. Now on to aquascaping!

I like this final layout but keep in mind that I didn't have any fijicrete, so the arches are temporary. They are just holding things together. I am going for three islands. Mind you, the arches are starting to grow on me. The way it sits, it's about 70" long. Should fit well in the temporary 79" long tank.

They are based off a big rock at the bottom, with a 3/4" PVC support that I drilled into the rock. This allowed me to brace most of the pieces so that they are stand-alone structures. There's a couple pieces that will need to be fijicreted or zip tied into place.

Updates?

Not too much to report at this time. Just cycling away!! Just started to get diatoms yesterday. So im sure it will be a brown mess in the next couple of days.

Here is an updated FTS:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Fishroom%20Build/20140910_142615_zpsaoe3vrng.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Fishroom%20Build/20140910_142615_zpsaoe3vrng.jpg.html)

And here is the sump area. I cleaned up some electrical on the left side of the closet using panduit.

Next I have to get the other side of the system up and running with the fuges and frag tank. Still looking for a 4 foot tank to replace the one I smashed. Lol.

So, here is a color progression. Im now just passed the diatom phase. Im only using 4 of the 12 bulbs in this fixture during the cycle, so that I have a minimal amount of algae growth. But it seems to be going well.

My settling tank idea is also working amazing. Barely any detritus is making it into the return sump. It will be perfect to just stir that up and drain the tank for water changes.

So another cycle update. Nitrates are getting lower and lower every day. I'm starting to see some life!

Last night I changed all the bulbs to a more blue look. Keep in mind that all the previous shots of the tank were on dusk/dawn channels with only two blues and two pinks.

Heres the new bulb arrangement:

Front
KZ Superblue
WP Blue wave 460
WP Reef wave
WP Sun wave
WP Coral Wave
KZ New Gen
Back

It looks a lot less blue in person, but its almost identical to a 14K look. The couple fish I have in there look outragously colorful already.

Coraline is already starting to grow everywhere. This is on the bare bottom.

You know, I was just having this conversation with a buddy while looking at the tank. And I have no idea!!!!! The thing about coraline is that it will look more patchy than fully covered...but on the other hand scraping it often will be a nuisance.

If it were me, and for no reason in particular, but I'd probably let the coraline be on the bottom.

Thats what im thinking..... and mainly from a pure laziness perspective. lol.

I just think if coraline spreads as fast as it has in all my other setups, i'd be razor-blading it every day trying to keep it clean. I think i'll leave it and just keep it as debris free as possible. Which so far is working great. With 2 WP40's situated on opposing ends, i'm getting a gyre like flow in the tank which only has two tiny noticeable dead spots where everything is accumulating. That happens to be in between the rock structures which is nice and accessible.

Well not to much to update. Things are coming along fantastic. Im really starting to appreciate nuking the rock to begin with. Im still dealing with a little bit of green hair algae, but it seems to be going away more and more every day. Coraline is starting to cover all the new rocks, so its starting to look better.

Dead rock starting to look better:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Mobile%20Uploads/20141125_215527_zpskcjrdi37.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141125_215527_zpskcjrdi37.jpg.html)

I also started a vinegar dosing regimen. Im up to 30mL/day at this time. Seems to be working great. Also running GFO and carbon in reactors.

Sump closet:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c38/bilmaga/Mobile%20Uploads/20141125_215009_zpsmwg3e6h8.jpg (http://s24.photobucket.com/user/bilmaga/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141125_215009_zpsmwg3e6h8.jpg.html)

Lots and lots of Scypha ciliata (aka pinapple sponges), spirorbid worms and feather dusters are covering the walls of the sump, and little critters are everywhere! So looks like thinhs are nice and healthy so far.

The ease of access looks incredible for most of the equipment you've got there. get your titanium rear in gear and get that 210 already!

Thanks! Its been nice to do most of the maintenance without bending over!

I just have to sweet talk some buddies into helping me pick the tank up as I will be useless. Most of my friends run when I mention moving a tank after the last few big ones lol.

Black background and bottom = hotness. Mow I just have to get off my but and make the stand.

Well it was an interesting start to May. Went to work on Friday morning and things were looking great. Then I came home 9 hours later to find everything unhappy, polyps retracted, colors fading and some SPS bleaching/dying. Not good. So I performed an emergency 80 gallon water change and vacuumed out the display and frag tanks. After a couple of nail biting days, things are on the mend.

Unsure what happened, but things are looking up. Lost a couple small pieces. The 80 gallon water change helped tremendously. Things started to get back to normal after a couple days. Mostly color loss and fading in a lot of SPS. But they are all starting to make a comeback. I have since done another 40 gallon water change and vacuumed the display and frag tanks of detritus again.

The disaster seems to be averted at this time.

Wow that's a seriously impressive build. I'm currently starting the process to convert my 180g freshwater tank to a reef tank and this journal definitely gave me some ideas. I just wish I had the space you do for all those sumps, plumbing, etc. I'm going to have to get creative with building some cabinets to store everything.

Right now I have a large single chamber PM reactor that I will use until I can afford a nice dual chamber one. Have my eye on a vertex, but i cant seem to find one large enough for my system volume (420 ish gallons). So I was thinking of a super reef octopus CR5000D. Or going crazy and calling avast or GEO's. But who knows. The tank wont be ready for that much calcium for a while.

Also reeeaaaaallllly want a carbon doser regulator system. But man are they expensive!

What kind of carbon doser system regulator are you wanting?
