Think you were eating one of the same species that shows up in the trade?

Do they taste like some sort of forbidden lobster?

In the south Pacific they eat them just like lobster here!

Hard to tell. They were BBQ'd :) Tasted nothing like shrimp or lobster. Very unique taste.

they taste like Crawfish, which as my son keeps reminding me is actually not a fish at all.

Yup, I recall eating one of those once, very similar.

My son has a blue crawfish in his room and he keeps asking me if he can eat it.

I had it in Hong Kong when I was younger, I remember seeing them live in tubs at street markets.

Saw a lot in the markets in Bangkok. Some were huge! I ate them in Cambodia, where they sell them by the tray on the beach. Lime and black pepper seasoning. nom nom.

Well I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that I get one in as a hitchhiker. I'll raise it up nice and big, then I'll poach it with some butter! My tank will be the world's least efficient aqua-culture set-up.

I don't know if tank raised in ur reef would have the best taste, but maybe I just picture eating a fish from a lake in the summer and the mud taste :frown:

I'm told they're all good. Cats are hard to catch tho :)

I preferred them over lobster because i found their meat is little bit sweeter. Also you get more meat out of them than lobster for the same price you pay :-)

ok that officially looks delicious. Is the meat easy to get out? All the pictures I've seen is them served with their shells still on.

and fwiw, I don't care much for horse meat. I've unwittingly eaten it twice, and found it rather gamey

just wondering where one would find them for sale in Canada? I go to Kim Phat often and I have seen nothing like that. There are live crabs, lobster, fish but I have never seen any mantis dead or alive?

hehe, all the mantis shrimp that arrive on our shores are sold as pets, there's none left over for the grocery store!

I paid 89$ for my peacock mantis shrimp...now that would be a really expensive meal!

I guess these things have more value as a pet than as a meal. I am willing to pay that much for my pet but I would never pay that much for one piece of meat.
