View Full Version : How do I get rid of this stuff?

This is really spreading around the tank, on rocks, sand, overflows. Not the clam, the clove stuff. It's even growing on the clam shell, but it's not bothering the clam at all.

I'm thinking of pulling the rock out and scrubbing it off. Any other ideas?

you might have to remove clam and kill the rock, otherwise chemical warfare and kill everthing else.

Get your chisel and remove clam from rock.

I really really don't like this answer. :twised:

The clam has been on this rock since I first brought it home. It's on a few other rocks as well that will involved pulling my rock work apart.....

There's a small rock I can get at, I'm gonna scrub and see if itll come off......

Blue clove polyps are the worst. Scrubbing the rock will do nothing as they will just grow back.
People have had success using fluke tabs. Do a search.

Thanks, I'll do a search!

These are more brown than blue. I can pull the mats off the sand but not off the rock.... Grrr

Kalk paste maybe? Or cover them with patches of epoxy until they die. Then pull/peel the putty off. Then epoxy up the ones you missed and repeat until you're happy.

Fluke tabs sound like they'll kill a few things, Xenia, gsp, I have both and love them!

Kalk paste may be an option. Wasn't bad on just 1 rock but it's getting everywhere now.

im having the same issue. i have both the brown and the blue. the blue is everywhere in the tank in litttle patches. tried kalk, just comes back. the brown is on some baserock. guess some re-scaping is upcoming. too bad there isnt a nudie or fish that would dine on these.

there was a big thread on fluke tabs and clove polyps recently wasn't there? They are apparently very effective, but not specific.

clove polyps are so funny. I see them for sale all the time. I keep wondering when I'm going to see aiptasia show up for sale.

I bought one once, about 20 yrs ago. I fed it and watched it grow. And multiply :)

I went thru that thread. I didn't buy these, came in on something. I've got some aiptasia I could sell, various sizes available....lazy peps won't touch them....

Therein lies the problem :) A couple of members here had a few extra that they passed around, and they worked really well for most of us that tried them. I think Bill had to redose, but I got mine all the first time.

Not a good solution. Spencer has been trying to use a chocolate chip star with very little success.

I've been doing some reading and they are also not considered reef safe. Will eat clams and soft corals.

Has anyone tried treating with hydrogen peroxide full strength outside of the tank?
I used 50/50 peroxide/tank water mix of the standard 3% solution a while back when battling my hair algae outbreak. All the corals and zoos bounced back within a few hours but my clove polyps stayed closed little specs for almost a week. This was after only a 2 minute dip.

Someone mentioned aggressive use of activated carbon (I think) in that thread about cloves not too long ago.
Cloves don't bother me. if i need to get rid of them, tooth brush always works very well and fast if i need a spot or want some other coral to get some room.

Why are blue cloves considered bad?

They can/will quickly grow in plague proportions, covering every bare surface in the tank.

Do they kill things? Or over take other corals?
Do they just cover the rock?

I've been reading, and apparently Panacur or Safe-Guard are suitable alternatives to fluke tabs. (dewormer)

Also commonly used to kill hydroids!
