phytoplankton are microscopic organisms that live in watery environments, both salty and fresh.
Why do you need it? well for coral they get only a small amount of there food from photosynthesis, The have zooxanthellae which produces food from the light, and the amount of food that does not get consumed by the zooxanthellae is left over for the coral, Since there is not enough food for them to consume in the average aquarium it is important to feed them various types of food.
For your average coral it is good to feed them 2 - 3 times a week, even more for non photosynthetic corals.
For feather dusters they do not produce there food by photosynthesis so you have to feed very heavily.
