Well I was talking to doug tonight and he let me get bit by the bug !!!!! I'm looking for a small tank to start a small system for my room for the end of summer .

I'm probably goin to have a 30- gal tank with fowlr and a 2 perc's and starfish 1 blue and 1 red, maybe a TANG  probably a faiywrasse no DSB and as much rock i can put in there PURE REEF LOOKING TANK .
lighting hagen glow mat 2x20w 40 w total or maybe a 175 MH 20K
and a ac 500 for filter and carbon

IMHO a 30 is far too small for a TANG, and too small for a Fairy Wrasse too.

Much too small, yes. That's quite a range of options you're throwing out there - go with the MH over the NO I would think, for starters.

I have a 29 with 2x55 PC over it - barely bright enough. Supplemental feeding, supplemental natural daylight, etc... And a pair of Ocellaris clowns, and one other tiny fish. That's about all. Certainly no TANG...

You're really limited in this size range, unless you put a lot of resources toward filtration, and maybe a sump.

Nice thing about the 29, it has no center brace, so a single MH is an option.

Michael,

Have sent you a PM about tanks.

Have to agree with boB about having a tang and a fairy wrasse in small tanks. Fairy wrasses grow to about 4"-5" long and are better in a 4' tank. A yellow coris wrasse might be okay in a 30g, though, as long as the tank is long. Tangs grow BIG, unless you fold them

For lighting, you wouldn't need a MH for a fowlr, and 40 watts may not be enough to get good coraline growth. Maybe a PC setup would be a better solution, giving quite a bit of light, but not so much as to be a waste on a fowlr tank.

Yeah, I THOUGHT you might be baiting us... Putting the TANG in CAPS perhaps was a clue...

You go, Mike! A smaller tank can be a lot of fun, like my 29. Got a nice BTA in there, and the clowns too. It's a nice centerpiece when you don't have room to go BIG. That will be an adjustment for you.

As a sumpful guy. I am going to say, drill it if you want. A sump is a good place to hide heaters and perhaps other equipment, provide constant water level up top in the display, and so on. A good place to dump topoff or even include a float valve to provide constancy of SG, etc. etc.

But only if you want to. It's really about what's easiest for you.

Micheal,

The 28g is a Topfin tank. Don't know if it can be drilled. The 42g hex is an Oceanic tank. LFS guy told me they use tempered glass for Oceanic tank bottoms and cannot be drilled.

Is Topfin the brand you see at Petsmart? I think my 20g is a Topfin ... and I drilled it, no problem.

But tanks with tempered bottoms ... yeah don't drill those. Hopefully they have a sticker that says "Tempered" .. at least I've seen some tanks with that. .. Very considerate of them to let us know before we attempt anything...

Our 155g bowfront had a tempered bottom, so they drilled the holes in the back instead - the standpipe was then L shaped.
