Gonna take a timeout today from labor. And reflect on my past couple weeks. I finished work on march 1, So I should be off for a couple months, perfect time to mess with some fishy business.

So I decided to upgrade my biocube 29 tank to a 65 gallon rsm, I found one used, tore it down, set it up. Salt creep was appearing from the bottom corner, I wiped it down let it sit, and it was back 12 hours later. Wiped it down again, and it was still a touch moist. Decided it might have a small leak and shut it down.

Searched furiously for another tank, could not find anything, Bought a brand new rsm from the store, Set it up and and stand had some issues, Wobbly as all heck and everytime I tryed to shim, Something else would go even more out of whack. Alright screw this Rsm business. Took it back.

Finally found something I liked on the market, from wayner I picked up his tank, I really liked the dimensions as a 120 was what I was really eyeing up before settling on the rsm idea, but I was really after the 48 x 24 footprint.

Learned alot over the past couple weeks, Painted my first wall, installed my first blind, Installed my first gfci, Only to have to install a second, as the location changed, which I screwed up, so second guessed myself and ordered a electrician to do the work. Basically payed for a reciept to pass the buck if the house burns down. And troubleshooted my rodi unit, to find out that the waste restrictor was in the the fresh water intake side :)

Also, Found I need to chill out and take more time with things, As now the original RSM is sitting in my basement, holding water with no signs of leak, So i can only assume at this time, that the moisture i was seeing was built up water that dripped into the bottom brace from the outside, Slowly releasing its self back.

Anyways thats the short version of the past two weeks. Lost 5 pounds from all the work that has been going into this.

Picture time....

What the corner was gonna look like. The builder paint sucks and looked like crap once i hit it a few times.

Anyways I ripped all the fuzzy stuff off the top of the stand, And found me a nice peice of ply. Sealed it with some kilz, and top coated with rustoleum.

Ill attach it probably tommorow, As the paint just finished drying today.

the sump that was purchased because of a concept garage sale. Might use the "Refuge" area for ato instead. Currently soaking in water in vinegar thanks to some sweet magical shop dust.

My favorite new tools after switching out 3 tanks in 2 weeks, Shop vac for that little bit of water u can never get out of the bottom of the tank, after syphoning. And easy moves..!!!!

So messing with muriatic.......

Hmmm really glad I did this on the small scale first... In. 5 gallon pail with 10 l of water and only 1 liter of muriatic the amount of bubbles to start the operation caught me off guard. And it would seem 2 very large boxes of baking soda has not been enough to nutralize. Nasty nasty stuff. Need to plan the larger batch a bit better

I'm sure you'll be very happy with the larger tank over the RSM

I'm 'almost' kicking myself for going with a 75g instead of a 4' 120g

Looking forward to your progress, and LOTS of pictures

Brett yes I am . She tolerates it.

J, anytime - once you can actually walk in my kitchen

As for an update. I was having a disco party tonight - with my newly hung lights and then bam. Gfci tripped and tripped again and again... Moved to another gfci receptacle, they seem to be holding on so far. So back to the disco.

Made a temporary echo tech house
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y223/kryptic4l/F78A1C01-0FAF-4AFE-BFBE-D0E451B20B8B-4658-0000053D015D30DF_zps155bb229.jpg

And rerouted my emergency line as the sideways travel seemed to be impeding flow. Feeling kinda Canadian in the old sump tonight.

03-27-2013, 01:17 PM
Wow I must have overpaid for the anemone for you to afford all that stuff lol

About the gfic plug in are they side by side ? You should only have one on a circuit they will cancel each other out I believe but I am a carpenter not an electrician

Looking good I am jealous of all the new toys you have there

Kryptic4L
03-27-2013, 05:26 PM
lastlight its funny you should mention, i did get some purple primer on my floor :) - i may have bribed her with promises of a kitchen table

evil both gfcis are on the same circuit but are wired independent of each other. so if one trips the other does not. the light made it through the night so i can only assume its a weak gfci on the one end. and the radions obviously have a engineering issue

i am just really happy it happened right away. now i know to keep the lights on their own receptacle.

last two days were my mexican vacation money spent . we were supposed to be in mexico this week. so im just bringing cancun to me :)

Thanks everyone for the well wishes.

Got the muriatic / bleached rock in yesterday. ( which FYI I will never do again. Without a good place to dump acid . The price was about 120 bucks after the trash can baking soda to neutralize and acid. ). Could of got some Marco rocks for a similar price )

The live rock from the temporary tank went in today. Just have my main tank to go. Which I'm gonna play by ear.

Since there was no Interest in my rsm 250. I think it will make a mighty fine quarantine tank.probably remove a few bulbs from the hood to keep temps down.

Still need to build the top trim, get some rare earth magnets for the door and figure out the some kind of home for the wiring and auto top off

Well just a quick update found me a auto top off container that will have to work for now, until I can really figure out how my electrical is all gonna sit in the stand.

Finally frigging found some 1/4 mesh for a proper screen in this city. About two hours after I placed my brs order for some. As you can see in the photo the screen I found at Canadian tire was to large . But this golden acre plastic chicken wire was the ticket. Was 30 for a roll.

On the upside of the golden acre visit. I found me a really kick butt plant. So I had to have it .

Nice looking tank! Could you show a close up of that trim you used please? I have a very similar tank waiting to be set up that is trimless and I have been brainstorming ideas for a lid. I was thinking of siliconing a tiny triangle of glass into each corner. That trim you found looks real clean though.

Basically it's standard fish tank trim as seen in 1.

2. Sliced where it would normally lay on the top rim

3. The inside lip with the nice factory edge then lays on the top rim
And the cruddy cut edge goes inside as a lip.

I did 3 sides this way and left the front alone.

One thing I should mention I don't regret going with the radion pros over the radion g2s as the colours just explode in the morning .

Thanks again for the love folks

I think I'm gonna eventually run pellets on this tank because I'm pretty stoked about this thing .

I drew this when pellets first were released.

Looks great! Great idea about the trim too. (*starting to scheme* ... I have a FOWLR tank that I needed to basically completely box in the canopy because it houses a Hawaiian flame wrasse pair and a golden dwarf moray and I'm utterly terrified they'll get out of the tank otherwise ... I'd much prefer an open top though, so this def has me thinking!!)

Great bromeliad too. Careful, they can be pretty addicting in their own right. I count reefs, orchids and broms as 3 of my current vices.

Grrrr today, set up a nice qt for a mystery wrasse last night, I never used to set up quarantines just thought I would play it safe in a new tank. And my next to new Eheim heater over heated the tank to a nice 84 degrees.

That's 2 mysteries in two months. These new ebos suck. One is heating low on one tank and the other is heating way high

modified some floor drains today and cemented them in. so took the sump offline for the night. i was having trouble with the water jumping to the next chamber and making a ton of noise. so hopefully this will help keep the flow going through the socks. strange that the best fitting ones for my socks were the most expensive :)

great idea! did you get this sump from concepts? i had the exact same issue with my socks being slightly too small for the holes and so water was leaking around the rim of the socks and splashing straight into the chamber below.

what i've done for now is cut thin strips of filtration cloth and wrapped them around each sock to close those gaps.

Yes I did.

For once the project went better then expected only a very small drip remained afterwards, everything feels very solid in there. If I get peeved off enough about the drip I picked up a back up plan today. I've kinda been looking for an excuse try this out. But I will probably just leave it alone as things are much quieter now.

Running 300 micron brs socks. These things need to be pushed into place. But are solid once in place.

Mother f$@&er .......... Feeling very frustrated tonight.

I've had two tangs, one tomni and one PB marinating in the basement for over a week. They seemed content in the 50 gallon cube. The tomini hid all day in a pipe the pb could not get to, when they both were out and about they showed no signs of aggression towards each other.

They did very well during the first week of prazi. However did not seem very interested in food past the first 2 days .

Started cupramine two nights ago. After I found the pb crashing into a rock repeatedly. Measured the water did the calculations and dosed accordingly. Went and bought. A copper test kit, only to find out it wa not compatible with cupramine. Went to get another test kit tonight, before I administered the second dose. And found the tomini dead when I got home, and the PB on his last breath.

Just been feeling like every one step forward I take 5 backwards. the more I try and do things right, the more things are going wrong.

R.i.p PB, tomini, mystery wrasse, lawn mower man .

I had many fish come and go through the years, tonight's loss of the pb from mr happy go lucky to dead in. 5 hours. Is really hitting me hard, it's gotta be the big eyes.

Sorry for your loss buddy! I can understand that battle with QTing tangs.

I've got 2 Tangs in QT right now at the office. One Juvie Sailfin and One Juvie Orange Shoulder.

Both eat like pigs but both of them hide instantly as soon as I show myself in front of the tank. I think the Sailfin would be a lot better and less skittish if the Orange Shoulder wasn't in there as it is always the Orange Shoulder that hides first and then the Sailfin follows suit.

Makes it frustrating as I can never get a good look to inspect either of them.

Hopefully your luck turns around soon!

Thanks for the condolences :)

After much deliberation moving forward I will be changing the cupramine dosing moving away from their two doses as it was the initial dose that I believe did them in. As they never made it to the full treatment. I will do smaller daily doses over a weeks time.

Anywho as for the good, i finally got the skimmer dialled in, from what I've seen so far, it does not like being to deep in water and not to shallow. It's been stable however I hate the adjustments on this skimmer.

Got some gfo in a reactor , and carbon in a baggy.

Never mind FedEx showed up. Just as my order showed up.

From what I could gather experiences have been pretty mixed With this place, but most info was coming from group orders, which can be dicey info as there is more factors that come into play.

Anyways communication has been flawless so far, my original delivery date was pushed back two days due to heat pack issues. ( from what I could gather , this place didn't use heat packs ) Well if they didn't they do now.

One of my frags I ordered was not doing so well, I got a phonecall in the morning before he shipped, stating my options of refund, or a grab bag of others not even on the site yet. Pfft I'm going for the mystery box every time folks . He even offered to refund if I was not happy with the replacements.

Here's some packaging photos, they are currently warming up in my sump. The bags felt pretty warm considering the snowy weather today.

Everything so far a+

crock-pot for the win?

Are you not supposed to cook them before putting in the tank ? People cook live rock, so I figured why not throw some frags in the oven at 350 for an hour to sterilize. Before they go in my tank.

Anyways I think I identified that everything that was supposed to be there is there, funny thing is there is one frag, that is near identical to the cancelled frag.

Good enough for me, now we wait for them to get less ****ed off

So got a bunch of frags in today good thing and progress, must be counterbalanced with bad stuff.. Maxi mini decided to go for a walk into the mp40 , thankfully it's a maxi mini anenome , however I since I run my mp 40s at half speed, it didn't demolish him, he plugged it right up... And knocked it down. I think he will see another day.

Borrowed me a decent camera so maybe I can finally get some decent pics. On the go .

Well my OCD has subsided a touch, and I've started to enjoy other non fish related activities for the time being. I did finally get my water change system almost done now.

Got a couple speed waves to power the water upstairs, all plumbed using 3/4 inch line. Basically one line goes upstairs now and using valves I "should " be able to siphon / pump fresh and salt water.

Gonna test it out later today, as I would like to get a water change in tomorrow. And I'm really sick of hauling fresh water upstairs daily.

The make sense of everything in my head drawing.

Just following what the pros do :)

Anyways got the rest of the braided hose to go from the sink to the tank.

Turned on the water from the bottom most tank, so far no leaks from my crummy plumbing skills. And the water from the speed waves seems to be pumping through at a reasonable rate. Making up my first batch of salt water with the new system. Gonna add some supports to the plumbing.

So good and bad news today..... Found my blue spot dried up behind the tank, guess he found a small gap in my screen top. Wouldn't mind another at some point but I think I'm just gonna let the tank chill for awhile.

Got a lot of algae at the moment, I have a feeling the rock i got off a dude, is pretty high in phosphates. So I'm gonna try a box of bioclean, and eventually move onto bio pellets. On the upside, that much established live rock with no other apparent issues, is a good thing. I don't mind the phosphate battle over other bad things rock can have.

As for the good news, just finished my first water change with my system, everything worked out better then expected. Super fast draining and filling. And was the first water change I completed ever without spilled water. The full 30 gallons took about 10-15 mins..

The process was basically kill all power, let back flow. Empty sump the best I could, refill sump. Turn everything back on. Had a few gallons left of fresh mixed salt in the basement. But not enough that I feel like I wasted a bunch.

Siphon was easy to start as the line was filled with fresh water so I just kept closing the valve I have on the end of the hose. To move to each chamber. No siphon start required.

Super stoked to do water changes now . Just need to make some specialized attachments for the system. Like a strainer as what goes down, goes down. And I fear the day anything goes down that will plug the system. Valves with couplers would of been the better choice.

Just wanted to post some updates, as its been awhile, Since I posted last.

I lost pretty much every fish in my tank, 2 clowns-3 anthias, a blenny, a powder blue, a mandarin a cleaner shrimp over the coarse of a weekend a few months back. so the tank had been sitting with just the ruby head wrasse the canary wrasse and the leopard wrasse.

Im not sure if it was all the base rock decided to cycle, or if it was ich that irradicated the tank, as I cant remeber if the cleaner shrimp dissapeared that same weekend. Regardless. New purchases came to a stand still.

I had been fighting with my skimmer off and on for sometime, everytime the cup got half full it just randomly overflowed within a night. and finally have now gone a month or so without this happening. However the skimmate production isnt half of what it was, im not sure if this is a result of a lowered amount of crap in the tank. Eventually I may look into getting another skimmer but for now its doing the trick.

Finally got into clearing a bucketful of caulerpa racemosa from my tank, This will be my on going battle of this tank I guess. Picked up a few emeralds recently in hopes they may help with this. Regadrless they will help with the crew.

Picked up two new clowns and a sailfin, both seem to be doing excellent in the tank so far. and always happy for feeding time.

The best thing I have done with this tank was my water change system, I have never been this ontop of my changes, best money spent by a longshot. No more buckets - less spills - 10 minutes start to finish for a 30 gallon water change. LOVE IT...

Quick update today.

Got a new toy. My ro system is in the basement. So I had to walk downstairs to turn on the pump to fill up my ro bucket. Or just leave the pump on and hope nothing ever happens to my gangster plumbing job.

Problem solved now I can just turn the pump on and off from anywhere with Internet theoretically I can fill up my ro while on vacation as well now.

Well figured i was due for an update, since i just removed 50 ish lbs of rock from my tank due to being over run by calurpua racemosa, been fighting it for a few months, so I finally had enough pulling out buckets worth of it.

Got a fox face as an employee and removed a ton of rock, on the upside it was a double kill " I PREY" as I got rid of the xenia that came out of no where and started to take over.

been losing the odd fish here and there, starting to wonder if the anenomes are getting there fill.

Well long over due for an update post, since I neglected the tank all summer, I had coralline take over all panels, which I finally took care of today, along with a long over due water change.

The tank has been thriving for some time now, the couple sps i do own is doing well, no signs of fish disease or deaths in upwards of half a year, no signs of the calurpa algae. Pretty much on auto pilot, as Id be doing long quarantine before I add anything at this point, it's been so long since I had a tank in this condition, don't want to mess it up.

figure its time for a bit of an update, one of these days i will have to inventory my tank.

My orange back wrasse randomly passed away a couple months back, as did my red frogspawn colony.

Had some more racemosa show up again in the tank, so another rock had to be escorted out.

for the first time in 6 months, i have seen my sump crab.

picked up a seneye, going to use it on the quarintine tank and replaced my screen top.

have a few new residents procuring, 1 wrasse, 1 blue spot jawfish, 1 ruby red dragonette.

both clown fish are now hosting anenome's full time.
